I like Iris - it is lovely

Greensleeves · 14/10/2006 10:26

I think the thing about using very "quaint" names like Pearl and Violet is that when it's still hypothetical people associate them with old ladies and think "ugh, no". But once the baby is there, it stops being old-fashioned and weird and become really adorable and quirky and sweet.

DH and I considered Violet. But we are firmly resolved that any future girl-baby will be called Rainbow.

princessmel · 14/10/2006 10:28

I like them all but not AS keen pearl as the other 3 as I'm not a fan of real pearls.
They make me think of Pearly Kings and Queens and that reminds me of buttons and I've got a bit of a button phobia! Strange I know.
I like Ivy too which is similar.

BATtymumma · 14/10/2006 10:28

Curlew....i had the same worry. in the end i found an ultra pretty girly name that could be shortened and even made a little masculine if she turns out to be a 6ft hairy bricklayer when she hits puberty.

3andnomore · 14/10/2006 10:35

Hm...Lula...not sure, tbh!
Iris, don't like that name, dispite having a fair few lovely girlfriends wiht that name....it's a commonly used name in Germany, or was in the 70s, lol!
Violet, kind of cute.
Pearl...lol...nope...sorry...mainly because it reminds me of Spongebob squarepants, Mr. Crabs daughter the whale is called Pearl, lol!

Tortington · 14/10/2006 10:52

i love the name violet - will be suggesting in strong terms for grandchildren!!

my nan is called violet - she hatesit - apparently when she was born he went off and registered her in the name of violet - after an old girlfriend he was still in love with.

nice!

Tortington · 14/10/2006 10:52

her dad that is - sorry

Tortington · 14/10/2006 10:53

SOULGHOUL · 14/10/2006 10:58

Lula does sound like a lapdancer. Pearl sounds like an old lady (sorry)

pussycatmomma · 14/10/2006 11:14

Pearl - no
Iris is my favorite, its beautiful.

hunkermunster · 14/10/2006 11:16

Lula's a pushchair (spelt differently, but still...).

Pearl is old lady.

Violet is sweet.

Iris is lovely.

pussycatmomma · 14/10/2006 11:19

re lockets post near start of thread - my nickname is Kitty!!!! Given name is Claire, but there was an Aunt Kitty on my Dads side, and somehow i reminded everyone of her, hence my new handle. My nieces and nephews still call me Auntie Kitty, and my friends at work. I really like it.

Yes, my mum gets the Violent gag. Cannot take the name Violet seriously at all, sorry.

wheelybug · 14/10/2006 19:54

Love Iris and Violet. Not so keen on the other two...

redshoes · 14/10/2006 20:02

Wheelybug, ditto

DarkAlleyBongo · 14/10/2006 20:06

Love violet, my nan is called iris, she can be quite offensive, and her sister is lily. Pearl is nice, as long as you have the right surname to go with it. Lula, too much like lola and that's all around atm. Love the old fashioned names. My dd is Sylvia, and she is the only other one I know under the age of 70

PanicPants · 14/10/2006 20:14

Love Violet and Iris

No no no to Lulu and Pearl

Wasn't pearl in last of the summer wine...

jeangenie · 14/10/2006 20:37
  1. IRIS - LOVE IT
  2. Violet - lovely too
  3. Pearl - good - need to be fairly cool to carry it off
  4. Lula - nope
tassis · 14/10/2006 20:47

I know of a Pearl in Aberdeen and she pronounces it "peril" (with the r rolled as only the Scots can do). Cracks me up and would put me off the name...

Don't like Lula

Love Iris and Violet - bit dh would never ever go for either.

Earlybird · 14/10/2006 20:50

My ex has a daughter named Lula - named by his psycho first wife - so bad connotations for me. No strong feelings positive or negative about the others.

expatinscotland · 14/10/2006 20:52

I only like Pearl b/c it reminds me of 'The Scarlett Letter', when Hester explains that she named her daughter that b/c a pearl is something bought at great cost.

southeastastralplain · 14/10/2006 20:52

and she stood up when she played the piano, in a nightclub

wafer · 15/10/2006 01:20

Hester - a good serious name
