...by an Interior design consultancy service. We rang up these peeps a couple of weeks ago these guys and asked them to come over.

They sent a young designer who spent an hour discussing our requirements and taking photos of the house.

Then today we received a letter saying something to the effect that she didn't feel able to help us on this occasion.

It's a wierd feeling - a bit like being dumped but not knowing why you got the old heave ho.

Winchester is terribly snobby - I'm just wondering if we are too red neck and rough for them.

Any thoughts?

blimey how rude of them!

Gobbledispook · 03/10/2006 14:18

How totally bizarre!!

JackieNoHeadJustABloodyStump · 03/10/2006 14:19

Did you ask them to put in a home pub with a bar shaped like a ship?

beckybrastraps · 03/10/2006 14:20

Nice to be able to afford to pick and choose!

handlemecarefully · 03/10/2006 14:20

It is bizarre. It's not like we were difficult clients we'd only had one introductory meeting where we were very polite and offered tea and biscuits . I do feel a bit offended - silly really!

eh???? Ring and say "oh well, we were going to use you to decorate the weekend retreat and the penthouse aswell" How odd!

FIMBOnABroomstick · 03/10/2006 14:20

I think I would feel like emailing them to ask why they couldn't help us on this occasion.

handlemecarefully · 03/10/2006 14:20

lol Jackie!

how insulting!

Having read their website, perhaps they are off on a trip to sunny Dubai - which beats a wet English autumn anyday

CountessDracula · 03/10/2006 14:21

Where do you live hmc? (ex winch girl here)

what were your requirements?

Gobbledispook · 03/10/2006 14:21

Yes, I would follow up too. God, am feeling quite offended on your behalf now!

BettyBatShapedSpaghetti · 03/10/2006 14:21

Maybe you offered the wrong sort of tea and the biscuits weren't posh enough!

iota · 03/10/2006 14:22

oh yess -how many types of tea did you offer? and were the biscuits home made?

handlemecarefully · 03/10/2006 14:24

Well dh has rung them and the explanation he got from the owner was that because we intend to keep a lot of our furniture that the designer we saw didn't feel she could do much for us...

(...we need blinds for the kitchen and utility room, for the dining room, for the conservatory, we wanted a change from cream walls throughout downstairs, we wanted some accessories and unusual additional bits /one off pieces of furniture...plus quite a lot of lighting)

...so that explanation doesn't ring quite true. The owner offered to come out and see us instead...but I'm quite reluctant now...umm..perhaps I am being petty

I'd send them a bill for wasting your valuable time, when you could have had a much better class of designer in.

handlemecarefully · 03/10/2006 14:25

I live 30 mins drive from Winchester CD - New Forest area.

It was probably tetley tea on reflection

handlemecarefully · 03/10/2006 14:27

Oh I like that SamhainW

Bucketsofbloodydinosaurs · 03/10/2006 14:27

I assume your budget came up in conversation, maybe it wasn't up to their expectations?
I luuuurve Winch, live in Southampton though.

handlemecarefully · 03/10/2006 14:28

It must have done. I guess we would have been prepared to spend around £30K

OP posts:
iota · 03/10/2006 14:29

business must be booming to turn down £30 K 's worth of work

handlemecarefully · 03/10/2006 14:31

The designer was quite young (not being ageist here) - perhaps she was a bit dappy....

OP posts:
Bucketsofbloodydinosaurs · 03/10/2006 14:31

Get him round then and dump him after wasting his time (in an amusing fashion that I'm sure we can help you with.)
Or get him round, take him on and expect to be pussyfooted around, maybe queen it a bit about the insulting woman, refuse to let her in the house kind of thing.

handlemecarefully · 03/10/2006 14:33

Just off for a few minutes now to pick up ds from pre school and dd from school. Will take my bruised and fragile self esteem with me (muttering to myself - so we're not good enough then are we...just because dh said settee and not sofa!)

QuootieSpookypie · 03/10/2006 14:34

i thought designers could work with anything? Tell the owner they mustn't be very good if that was the case. Find their rivals and go with them

Tortington · 03/10/2006 14:35

she did ask for brasses round the fireplace.

i cant afford an outgoing phone bill never mind a consultant.

ring them up and ask them?!
