heard two crackers while out in Zimbabwe.

firstly we arrived at our Lodge in Vic Falls and were greated by

"Fatnass" (that's the spelling DH says they probably used - but pronounced Fatness)

and on the list of contact at the Hwange safari Lodge was a

"Whatmore"

riddleywalker · 05/09/2006 21:14

I know an Ariel. She always gets a good reception...

NQWWW · 05/09/2006 21:21

There is a Storm at ds's school.

I went to school with Ann Bytheway.

In HK, where I worked briefly, they chose their own anglicised (sp?) names, some of which were fantastic - my favourite was "Forever" Yung.

Kaloo20 · 05/09/2006 21:22

dmo - there is nothing wrong with Bibby, probably just a short form of the childs name

ds had a mylove (spelt differently) in his class at nursery

MegaLegs · 05/09/2006 21:22

pmsl riddleywalker

Pinotmum · 05/09/2006 21:24

Ds has a Favour in his Nursery Class which I quite like.

"Think you need a baby name you can pronounce really"

Not really the same - but it took me over a year before I could properly pronounce my (now) married name. And I was still having to write it down to spell it to people 3yrs after we married!

Names which have caused me to bite hard on my inside cheek to keep from laughing:

Blade
Willow
Paradise
Lancelot

squidgeymiller · 05/09/2006 22:25

I went to school with a Ben Dover (I'm not kidding - had to check with my sister recently to prove it to my DH!) and one of the girls on my ward when having dd had a boy and called him shea (pronounced Shay)

squidgeymiller · 05/09/2006 22:26

ps, not really sure about summer for a name, in a perfect world would be ok but always makes me think of californian airheads

merlotmama · 05/09/2006 22:42

LaDiDaDi - that'll be Pocahontas McGlinchey, then? She and little Chlamydia are apocryphal, I think.
JennT - I have met a Sky Blue, too. I think her surname changed, but when she was little her surname was Peacock.
I met a Blessing just this week. And I used to work with a Garland, which I thought was rather nice. And I mustn't forget little Zinadine, who has a very Scottish surname.

squidgeymiller · 05/09/2006 22:44

ooh ooh ooh - forgot I also went to school with a precious!!

CristinaTheAstonishing · 05/09/2006 23:08

On holiday in Romania I saw a little baby dressed in blue. I asked the mum its name and she proudly said it's Summer. I said "oh, is it a girl?" "No, a boy, Summer Gabriel." Catalina is a pretty common name there.

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 05/09/2006 23:15

Names such as Favour, Charity, Blessing, Grace, Hope, Faith etc etc are really common in Zimbabwe.

suedonim · 06/09/2006 01:49

QoQ, names such as Blessing, Beauty and Gift are common in Lagos, where I mostly live atm, but I've yet to meet a Faith, Hope or Charity, which really surprised me. Gloria is v common, though!

Grew up next door to two sisters - Storm and Raina

ruty · 06/09/2006 08:50

I was going to say the same thing about
Catalina and Romania CtheA.

educatingrita · 06/09/2006 09:07

I must say im secretly a fan of unusual names
I dont like traditional names where, when they go to school they are 1 of 5 other Emma,Thomas or Jessica's so they get called by a sirname. If statistics are correct those with unusual names get remembered more and stand out (is that a good thing?)
Anyway my worst one, and I think this is sick, was that I went to school with a boy who had no legs below the knee, he wore artificial ones. And his name was- Neil

I just hope that he wasnt born likle that or his parents need shooting!

Peridot30 · 06/09/2006 09:24

When in hospital having ds woman in bed next to me called daughter Shakira.

schneebly · 06/09/2006 09:36

I had a girl in one of my drama workshops called Storm (love it!)- she moved here from South Africa.
I know of a Wisdom and he is from Jamaica.
I live in a small Scottish farming community where everyone is called John and Mairi and a local couple caused quite a stir by naming their children Luxor (girl) and Alba (boy).

SSSandy · 06/09/2006 09:40

I'd prefer the girl to be called Alba and the boy Luxor somehow.

expatinscotland · 06/09/2006 09:43

I knew a fella called Luran. It's a very old Gaelic name.

jumblesale · 06/09/2006 10:08

I know a little girl called Raeven. Not qute sure why her mum has added the extra 'e', but she has black hair and big dark eyes so I think it's a fabulous name for her. She has twin siblings, Summer and Harley. I think Summer is a lovely name, but then I'm a sucker for River, Leaf/Leif, Brooke etc. (although I haven't given mine any of those names). Not too sure about Harley, though.
