I saw the poster at the cinema today, with my dds (7 & 9). I don't think they even noticed it tbh. Although I do agree that it is pretty graphic, and think people should complain to the relevant manager if they are offended.

BUT can I say, please don't shout and scream at the manager just for the sake of it - dh is a cinema manager (Cineworld), so obviously not childless, and I'm sure he would have understood if someone had complained to him. When I see him later, I'll ask his opinion about it.

Enid · 01/08/2006 18:30

dont worry emsiewill

I did complain to the manager but very nicely - I said I'd write to head office

no shouting and screaming here, I am not mad

OP posts:
Enid · 01/08/2006 18:31

it was cineworld too

I didn't really think you would, it's just that dh gets a really hard time sometimes of ridiculous customers (eg the 5 yr old who called him a "dirty rapist c**t" on Saturday because he asked her and her sisters to leave).

I don't imagine your dds would employ those epithets no matter how upset they were by the poster.

joelallie · 01/08/2006 18:57

I think HO need a kick up the bottom in that case. That's not OK. My eldest has a vivid imagination and seeing some like that would play in his mind for hours - 'mummy what was that? What was happening?' Ending with not being able to be on his own at bedtime. Although DD and DS#2 would have ignored it completely. However, regardless of the nature of the individual child, if it's an alarming image from an 18 cert film it shouldn't be shown where everyone can see it.

Of course it's best not to rant and rave Emsiewill - being reasonable and polite gets you much further or so I've found .

I agree with you sobernow.

Gobbledigook · 01/08/2006 20:20

No, would not be happy about that.

(I think it looks a good film though! Especially if like The Descent which is nice and gory!)

WideWebWitch · 01/08/2006 20:24

I've just skimmed this but I looked at my gorgeous unselfconscious 2 year old girl tonight as she messed about in the bath and I felt really, really pissed off that every time I go somewhere that sells magazines I'm confronted by the obscenities that are the covers of Nuts, Zoo, FHM and similar. I think girls being subjected to these as examples of what society thinks of women is more of a worry tbh.

The poster's not nice, no, but I probably wouldn't have been arsed to complain. I agree that you should if it upset your dds and therefore you though enid.

Enid · 01/08/2006 20:52

I think it depends whether your chlideren were upset by it or not tbh

I did think as I was walking down the corridor 'is it because dd1 is a wuss, am I being over sensitive, can I just laugh it off'

and then I thought actually it is a pretty horrible image and they are 6 and 3 for gods sake, why on earth SHOULD I expect them to just take it. It was dd2s first visit to the cinema (she is scared of, well, scary stuff) so it was doubly irritating after spending all morning reassuring her that Over The Hedge wasnt scary

also the manager happened to walk into view so I had a word - don't know whether I would have sought him out

yes agree there probably are more important things in the world but tbh if you had that attitude you'd never make a fuss about anything and sometimes its worth sweating the small stuff. IMO.

(was the Descent the one with the girls pot holing? God that was utter crap and totally unscary. I enjoyed Final Destination 3 last night though )

Enid - I'm with you. Children shouldn't have to see that.

Enid · 01/08/2006 21:42

yay

Caligula · 01/08/2006 21:44

No it's a totally unsuitable poster for the environment in which it's displayed. Complain to HO as well as the ASA and you might get some free vouchers back!

Enid · 01/08/2006 21:57

yes have complained to both

will let MN know what happens

Gobbledigook · 01/08/2006 22:45

Oh Enid, I quite liked The Descent in a kind of 'laughing out loud' kind of way! Same as Dog Soldiers!

expatinscotland · 01/08/2006 22:55

The Descent was a pile of steaming horse manure!

NOT scary.

Enid · 01/08/2006 22:56

no it was rubbihs

with the 'scary' gollum type creature?

OP posts:

expatinscotland · 01/08/2006 22:58

Yeah, and NO ONE else had a guide book or map but the hoochie friend who was hooked up w/her husband when he took a pipe to the carotid. So what do they do but go down farther. Yeah, that's really clever, ladies! Real adventure women would SO do something dumb ass like that.

Kiskidee · 01/08/2006 23:00

i think it is awful. the more kids are exposed to violence, the more the meeeedja thinks it is acceptable to put out there for all to see.

expatinscotland · 01/08/2006 23:00

Dog Soldiers was about as scary as cup of warm milk by a fire in winter.

Wolf Creek and The Hills Have Eyes were scary, though.

And I can't watch all those devil films like Emily Rose.

Gobbledigook · 01/08/2006 23:00

I enjoyed it because it was mindless - I quite like watching 'crap'!
