hilarious I love the fact that they look like parking tickets for each borough (but that they haven't done Richmond}

Skoda SUperb (never heard of it!) "Protection offered to pedestrians was abysmal. The car scored no points and gained no stars: a dreadful result, says Euro NCAP."

Jazzi · 13/07/2006 22:17

Come on all you 4x4 drivers, are you not going to join the debate??

mykidsmum · 13/07/2006 22:18

Quite honestly SD cars like that shouldn't even be allowed to be sold

Jazzi · 13/07/2006 22:18

Mykidsmum, who said I don't care about others?? I do find that really insulting!

mykidsmum · 13/07/2006 22:19

Actually why are cars such as these (not just 4x4s) allowed to be sold

Snafu · 13/07/2006 22:19

Soupy you might be shooting yourself in the foot if you're going to bring Skodas into it

mykidsmum · 13/07/2006 22:20

Sorry Jazzi am not trying to insult you at all, but if your choice in car is justified by a not give a shit attitude( not you personally) than you are showing a disregard for others.

SoupDragon · 13/07/2006 22:21

Edam, the point I'm trying to make is that you can't judge 4x4s as a class. Some (2) are actually safer for pedestrians than a number of smaller more common cars. We should be complaining about all cars which score low in the pedestrian safety tests, not just the easy 4x4 target.

I don't even have a 4x4 but my Laguna scores the same as an XC90. Does that make it better? The same? Or worse because there are more of them on the road?

SoupDragon · 13/07/2006 22:21

I hesitated to bring the skoda into it but it did score particularly badly

Jazzi · 13/07/2006 22:22

The type of 4x4 I own has been built for a purpose - a Clio for example wouldn't be much good if trying to tow another car our from a ditch, or in times or conflict when we are moving troops!

Snafu · 13/07/2006 22:23

Troop manoeuvres a big part of your day then, Jazzi?

mykidsmum · 13/07/2006 22:23

I guess sd its becuse 2 out of the many that are manufactued is not many so it is easier to lump them together, you may find some more knowledgable sticker people won't put one on your car . But not only that it is also the other issues that suuround 4x4 they are not hated for safety issues alone.

SoupDragon · 13/07/2006 22:23

The Skoda and the Audi TT Roadster were the only 2 to score zero outside theLarge Offroader category.

Snafu · 13/07/2006 22:23

Actually, I'd just like to savour that last post as the most hilariously irrelevant justification for a 4x4 I've ever read.

Jazzi · 13/07/2006 22:24

Now theres a thought!!

SoupDragon · 13/07/2006 22:25

mykidsmum, I have a Laguna, not an XC90. No one will ticket me but my car is apparently as unsafe for pdestrians as an XC90.

mykidsmum · 13/07/2006 22:26

but presumably your car doesn't do any of the other things that people hate 4x4's for

Jazzi · 13/07/2006 22:26

I agree..think it might be time for bed

mykidsmum · 13/07/2006 22:26

yep I'm off to, night peeps.

SoupDragon · 13/07/2006 22:26

Anyway, BabyDragon will be up in about 6 hours Best go to bed

FWIW, we chose our Laguna because it offered 5* protection for our family and was the only car to do this at the time. Pedestrian ratings didn't come into it.

Jazzi · 13/07/2006 22:27

Night!!

edam · 13/07/2006 22:28

Oh Soupy, bless you, I know you are trying hard, but that last post gives the game away, doesn't it? 4x4s are higher and heavier and more dangerous except two models. Those two models don't give you some kind of free pass into '4x4s are no different to any other car' heaven. They clearly are - look at the results. If you've got eight green fish, and two blue fish, the average fish is still green.

edam · 13/07/2006 22:29

The 10.23 'The Skoda and the Audi TT Roadster were the only 2 to score zero outside theLarge Offroader category' post, obviously.

housemum · 13/07/2006 22:35

Lovely idea but, how do you know if that person has a "legitimate" reason for an off roader? Do you need to watch for a week to see how much mud they have on it? I'm thinking of those who live in an urban area but have horses parked in fields rather than on their driveway. Or do they have to buy another car to drive to the supermarket in? Or have a "my other car's a horse" sticker so they don't get "ticketed".

flutterbee · 13/07/2006 22:44

OFGS unless you work on a farm I do not feel their is any need to drive such a huge, petrol guzzling dangerous lump of metal.

A very very close relative of mine sees death on the roads every single day and has had to scoop brains up of the road many a time. He has said that he would not allow any member of his family to buy a 4x4 unless they needed it for their job as he views them as the most dangerous catergory of vehicle on the road, and he believes that people driving them should need to hold a different type of license to drive them.
