Hair straighteners?

Hi, can anyone recommend a good (but reasonable!) set of ceramic straighteners? My SIL has worked wonders on my mop with her GHD ones, but they retail at £85 or so, and I just can't justify that kind of expenditure at the mo (if ever )!
Please help! I just can't and won't return to previous unmanagable curlywurly-frizzball ever again!!

There are quite a few threads on this you might want to look back on if they haven't vanished. Several of us have the HairTools ones, I got mine for about £35 on eBay. They are just fab but I haven't used GHD ones to compare them with.

I guess they've been archived. I got mine from this seller, exactly like these . He was good and reliable. The upshot of the threads was that the GHD ones were great. Only two people IIRC had tried both GHD and HairTools, one (alibubbles) thought that GHD were a bit better but that her daughter has very long hair so she needed really good ones, the other thought there was nothing to choose between them. I remember a few people saying that ceramic coated ones (BabyLiss?) were not very good.

God, I'm a sad case

I have Nicky Clarke ones from ARGOS, they were £60.
I love them and they look really nice and work fine. My friend has Hai Stick and they are nice, but she got them from her hairdressers.

DD2 has just bought some called GHS (no connection there then) for £40 off the internet. They only came yesterday but so far she is THRILLED with them. This is their website.

Hi. I've got the Hair Tools ones and a friend has the GHD ones. To me they seem identical and both work equally well on both of us. If you google search for Hair Tools Ceramic Straighteners yous should be able to get them for around £40. They really are brilliant.

you can get a good pair forom a hairdressers wholsalers do you have one near you they sell them at half the price and they are ceramic

As long as you don't buy ceramic coated you should be OK. Make sure the plates are 100% ceramic.

Thanks for your suggestions, similar straighteners at half the price sounds good to me :D!
Northener, are the fully ceramic ones better again? I only ask as SIL's GHD ones are only coated, but then I had noticed that some of the ceramic coating is starting to come away....
Thing is, I searched on the net for straighteners last night, and there are so many variables! I hadn't realised . So, does anyone know the benefits of ions, infra-red, etc, etc?! (This is worse than buying a car!)

I've got some Nicky Clarke ones from Tesco (ceramic plates) and I like them. I found the ends of my hair at the back were sounding scratchy when I was using the straighteners and it's because I've got a different colour underneath - you know, highlighted blonde top, brunette base. I treat myself to some Aveda protective spray (forget the precise name and it means me going upstairs but it cost around 12 pounds) and it works well.

Thanks Mears, wow, all of this has been well and truly thrashed out more than once, hasn't it!
Thanks for the tip Janh, it looks tempting, think I might go for that if you've had a good experience with the company - I'm a bit nervous of using Ebay!
I spoke with my SIL again, and she said she's had to re-wire her GHD ones several times, as the wiring keeps falling out and shocking her! Don't want to risk that while pregnant . Thanks for your time and suggestions.

When I studied the pack of teh Nicky Clark ones I saw they said ceramic coated. In fact they (straighterners) nearly all did when I read the small print - even ones that were £60 approx.

These straightners actually work so well because they get really really hot, thats the main key. The ceramic i think just helps it stay hot and protects your hair.

Glad I found this thread. I am looking for exactly the same. The ones I have at the moment are leaving my hair really dry. I was told the best place to get them from was a hairdressers supplier, anyone know if this is right please?

I got mine from a trade shop but only cause MIL is a hairdresser and has a trade card. Not sure if they sell to general public though?

A good creme for after straightening is the sheer blonde silkening creme,
hair is really soft after putting it on after using the straighteners.
It costs about £4 a tube and so far has lasted me weeks and I use it every day.

I got the GHD ones at Christmas and they do give a very professional finish to my hair BUT my hair has become so dried out with them.
I bought some of the Sheer Blonde stuff today (Boots have got a three for two offer on this range at the moment) so will see if that works.
