proper TMI thread - wot do you do with your used tampons?

no-one still flushes them do they?

do they?

i used to when i was younger but can't do it now, feel too guilty. it's such a faff though. i wrap them up in toilet paper and put them in nappy bags to be thrown out. is this ok or just as bad as flushing? i know i should get a mooncup by rights but i won't. so what's best?

not similar to diaphragms. much easier to put in as has depth to hold on to. Just fold it in half, push up & it pops into place.

DumbledoresGirl · 22/05/2006 19:06

Not another thread taken over by the mooncup! [groan]

Personally, I chuck my tampons down the loo - I thought everyone did - isn't that one of the reasons we use tampons over towels?

Orlando · 22/05/2006 19:09

Thanks ernest. Have often seen them mentioned on MN, but this thread has made me really seriously consider buying one. Just the disastrous diaphragm experience put me off, so your reply could help save the planet about 300 landfilled-tampons a year! (Jeez, what a gruesome thought...)

WigWamBam · 22/05/2006 19:14

I don't think I could handle a mooncup - I can't use tampons at all, so the mooncup wouldn't be the best bet! I use washables though, so don't have the bin it/flush it problem.

I'm going to gross everyone out now ... although I think I've posted this before, so perhaps not! My mother had a novel approach to disposing of her used tampons - she was a lazy mare and couldn't be bothered to do anything with them, so she used to throw them on the floor under the bed, then every now and then would collect them all up and throw them out together. Which is bad, but the really bad bit is that my sister and I used to play in her bedroom and these things looked just like stuffed mice - bearing in mind we were only young and were very clueless about such things, you can guess the rest yourself.

PinkKerPlink · 22/05/2006 19:15

i quite like the earings, what a novel idea

southeastastra · 22/05/2006 19:22

I remember watching a programme about very ethical people who used a handmade towel (well made!) which they washed and reused.

ernest · 22/05/2006 19:25

well my home made 'built-in-pant-liner knickers won't ever appear on tv but they are brilliant

DumbledoresGirl · 22/05/2006 19:29

OMG that was you WWB? I remember the stuffed mice story, but didn't remember which Mner posted it. I will from now on....Grin

bourneville · 22/05/2006 19:33

i use always ultra & wrap them in the plastic wrapper & pop into nappy bin.

dd (2.9) watches me Shock. By the time she's old enough for me to worry about that i'll be locking myself in for a private pee.

2mum · 22/05/2006 19:39

Ive never ever tried a tampon. Im a tampon virgin! But i put used sanitary pads in a plastic bag and then in the bin.

charliecat · 22/05/2006 19:44

They are cheaper on ebayGrin those mooncups!

2mum · 22/05/2006 19:47

Ive never tried a mooncup either, im too old fashioned !

WideWebWitch · 22/05/2006 19:49

I flush too but keep thinking I ought to get a mooncup.

PanicPants · 22/05/2006 19:57

Thankyou for the link RW. will give it some thought!
What about toxic shock?

ernest · 22/05/2006 20:34

no link with toxic shock as silicone inhibits bacteria growth

acnebride · 22/05/2006 21:58

a few cloth products\link{http://www.treehuggermums.co.uk/shop/catalog/Eco-menstrual-p-1-c-7.html\here}, can't find the ones I originally bought years ago but these look similar. I think they're great but must admit I have light periods. They have ones for heavy periods here too, haven't tried those.

Avoid Imse Vimse if you come across them, the ones I got from them were cheaper but rubbish.

remember from a lesson or two i did at college on history of clothes/costume that our ancestors used the re-usable cloth method, made of something similar to the cloths they steamed puddings in, although hopefully not the same one! they just washed them out and used them again and again.

Trefusis, I got mine from \link{http://www.plushpants.co.uk/details/Natural%20Woman/subcat/Wemoon(R)%20Menstrual%20Pads/extra_cat/Menstrual%20Products.html\this} site, I've had them for about 12 months and have been very pleased with them. I was quite tempted by the leopard print ones but didn't have the bottle!
