no-one still flushes them do they?

do they?

i used to when i was younger but can't do it now, feel too guilty. it's such a faff though. i wrap them up in toilet paper and put them in nappy bags to be thrown out. is this ok or just as bad as flushing? i know i should get a mooncup by rights but i won't. so what's best?

She moves in mysterious ways, does our munker.

Moomin · 21/05/2006 23:30

the same poeple that make natureboy&girl nappies have started making tampons so i guess they might be bio-degradeable.

dyou know wot?
I'm going to have a go on the old mooncup i think. Just read the website and now will have a trawl on the archives on MN as i know there are some users here.

(so is it not a no-no to flush then? just trying to find out. i'd assumed it was norty. am i wrong?)

Seems it is norty Moomin. I'm ordering my mooncup as we speak (I needed a kick up the backside over it and this has been it - cheers!)

misdee · 21/05/2006 23:31

i'm sorry,. but sparkles Shockdo we really need to accessorise our mooncups?

(from the mooncup site):"We just got ourselves a mooncup each and are skipping with joy that is mooncupness. the little bags are really cute and the liitle blue ribbons are very pretty. but the actual moncup itself looks kind of scary and medical and we think they should come in different colours and maybe with sparkles. just because something is useful doesn't mean it can't be pretty too. Other than this we think mooncups are fabulous and are currently attempting to convert all our friends to the wonder of mooncups.

tortoise · 21/05/2006 23:35

omg hunker! I had to look(sorry)!!!!

Moomin · 21/05/2006 23:38

i know, misdee, i thought that! although i think dd1 would be mighty impressed if she saw a pink sparkly mooncup hanging around the bathroom. sure it would end up as a hat for barbie though between periods.

right! am getting one this week.

arfy · 21/05/2006 23:47

well yes I am trialling the mooncup and I must say so far it's very easy and marvellous and I thoroughly recommend it.

Shock at the idea of sparkly ones though - how odd

from my point of view the main reason for not flushing them is that apart from the fact they absorb water, swell and can block your and other drains, they can get caught in all sorts off stuff and they'll never biodegrade, also presumably they inhibit water purefication etc.? or something like that. loos are for human waste only really, at least loo paper more or less dissolves, but tampons/pads don't.

am sure someone can express this better!

arfy · 21/05/2006 23:48

oh yes and the plastic applicators don't break down when the sewage is treated and end up washing up on beaches etc. nice!

myturn · 21/05/2006 23:50

Ok, am seriously considering the mooncup, despite the retching. Where do I get one?

misdee · 21/05/2006 23:53

boots.

Moomin · 21/05/2006 23:54

or from the website linked below. you can order direct.

OP posts:
myturn · 21/05/2006 23:54

Really?? (Felt like Kate Moss there, unfortunatly don't look like her one iota)

Thanks. Hope you are ok Misdee.

arfy · 21/05/2006 23:55

it's really no more retchy than tampons (and definitely nicer than pads!)

myturn · 21/05/2006 23:58

Thanks Moomin and arfy. Am definately going to get one. If they are no more retchy than pads, then have nothing to lose lol. (Apart from the obvious, eeurgh retching again)

fattiemumma · 22/05/2006 00:08

The very idea of the mooncup makes me fel ill.

i know it has great environmental points and saves a tonne of cash but i just dont think i could actually do the touching and washing thing [puke]

why cant they just make envo freindly tampons...would be sooo much simpler

SparklyGothKat · 22/05/2006 00:12

I can;t do Mooncups either, the thought is ewwwwwwwww.... I rarely use tampons (did the other night when I went out, and I did flush it) but I don't flush pads, they get wrapped in the packaging they come in and binned.

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 22/05/2006 00:18

oh god. I'm a flusher. - although courtesy of my mirena I barely have periods worthy of tampons anymore. a panty-liner (eeww I hate that word)is usually adequate (they go in the bin). they also find their way into dds drawers. and I once found one stuck on her bedside table (unused I hasten to add) she loves them. Dread to think what any guests might think. It's probably time for a moon cup. keep saying it. must take the plunge

Gingerbear · 22/05/2006 13:24

I used to wrap and bin tampons as we have a cess pit, not mains sewerage.
Now use a keeper (US version of mooncup) so am completely environmentally friendly. :)

LunaMoona · 22/05/2006 14:01

You lot are odd - what's wrong with emptying a mooncup out ? It's only a bit of blood - it's your own as well - how can someone be repulsed by something that comes from them...? wiieeerrd...

Moomin · 22/05/2006 14:13

i thought that too. I'd rather do that than have poo under my fingernails, which i seem to now have on a regular basis (dd2's not mine i hasten to add)

OP posts:
Pruni · 22/05/2006 14:21

Since you all seem to be discussing mooncups, I've wondered for a while...can you use them if your cervix points the wrong way? Mine does, for no apparent reason, and has never caused me any problems other than practice nurses not being very good at finding it, but I'd hate to splash out on a mooncup and find that it won't fit.

Gingerbear · 22/05/2006 14:22

groan at 'splash out on a mooncup'
