okay Coddy, I'm in - but what do we do?

codswallop · 18/01/2004 14:44

Encourage her primarily and get all the MN experts to help her out.

Have you tried your mP yet?

Sorry, I lost my connection AGAIN.
Thanx so much, you are all brilliant. Haven't seen m.p yet because at the mo the housing and council have given me all the points i've asked for, but just can't find anywhere to put me. I think an m.p would agree with council that i need to widen my areas of choice.

fairydust · 18/01/2004 15:01

A freind of mine use to hunt around the area she was looking for a council house as soon as she saw one was empty use to phone and ask to be considered.

IS there an exchange noticeboard at your local council offices.

clairabelle · 18/01/2004 15:01

can we just do a really quick recap please nutty, I was upi to speed but seem to have lost it recently.

nutcracker · 18/01/2004 15:07

O.k CB - I am in 2 bed flat, been waiting for 18mths to be moved. Have 1000 medical points with council and am top of list with H/A but no offers at all. I was considering going after empty masionette above shops, wothout garden and on dodgy estate but fab Mners have said NO WAY , which is right i know but feeling so frustrated.

FD - We have tried that several times, but always get told that it's already been aloocated, or even worse still, that it's going to be left empty because they can't aford to do it up.

pie · 18/01/2004 15:14

I'll be watching this thread, see what works

nutcracker · 18/01/2004 15:16

You'll be the first to know if i find some way of making them listen, or run off with a property developer :0

emmatmg · 18/01/2004 15:18

Nutty, how long have yo been top of the list? It strikes me that if you see a house thats vacant but they tell you it's already been allocated they they aren't putting you first.

I'm sure you've thought of this before but it seems a bit odd to me. Bloody councils.

nutcracker · 18/01/2004 15:20

This is incredibly crafty but i'm going to make out to my mom that i'm going to go after the masionette (she hates those particular one's) and then see what her opinion is on me moving to yorkshire, as the mo she is dead against me moving to far away.

Lisa78 · 18/01/2004 15:20

when they say they are leaving it empty cos they can't afford to do it up, is it unlivable do it up, or bearable? ie could you have it anyway and live in it till they can afford to do it up - or would they not allow it?

nutcracker · 18/01/2004 15:28

emmatng- I am top with H/A but they get about 1 3 bed house every 5 years become empty on this estate. Last one was when i was 7 mths pregnant with ds3, but because i hadn't actually had him i couldn't have the house.
With the council I have been awarded medical priority on the grounds that my property is causing my depression. This automatically gives me 1000 points but i am then placed on a list with loadfs of other people who have medical priority.

LISA78 - The 2 houses in question do look quite run down but as i've told the council before, as long as the electrics are safe and it has running water then i don't care about the rest. My dad is a builder so he would do all of the work for me.
They aren't interested though.

emmatmg · 18/01/2004 15:31

It didn't even cross my mind that there could be other people with medical priorty........sorry I was probably a bit thoughtless.

nutcracker · 18/01/2004 15:38

Not at all EMMATMG - It can be very complicated at times, usually more than it needs to be. When i first applied to council I was only given 300 points and told by housing officer that i wouldn't even get a cardboard box with that few points. It's taken me about 8 mths to get the medical points. At first they said that i could only have the points if i picked other (grotty) areas. I said that i would report them for blackmail if they persisted. IMO if my property is causing my depression then i should get the points regardless of where i'm willing to move to. They eventually agreed but sent my quite a nasty letter telling me that even with the points i will be waitin at least 1-2 years.

codswallop · 18/01/2004 15:44

what are the grotty areas and let me run them past my Grottometer

OP posts:
nutcracker · 18/01/2004 15:48

Well i'm not saying that they are awful, it's the schools i'm thinking of.

  1. Erdington (have lived there before and hated it)

  2. Kingstanding (nearly went after a house on Kingstanding Rd but don't want kidsd to go to Great Barr sec school

  3. Pype Hayes

nutcracker · 18/01/2004 15:51

Right I'm off, going to have a drive round the lodge and the vale before it gets dark.

Cu all later and thanx again

codswallop · 18/01/2004 16:02

ARe tyou really restricted to Great Barr though in Kingstanding - you never know dd may get in elsewhere - King Eddies?!!

arent there new homes in Pype Hayes - handy for golf!

OP posts:
nutcracker · 18/01/2004 17:21

Well i'm back. Only one empty house on the lodge and i think it has been adapted for disabled person so they wouldn't let me have it, but i will ring and check tommorow.

CODDY - As far as the schools go, dd1 would do well at a ny school I think, as she is very bright and enjoys school. I have found the primary schools to be much the same anywhere but the secondary schools seem to vary alot. If I lived in Kingstanding the kids would almost certainly have to go to Great Barr school, they def wouldn't get in to any sutton schools.

Just had a thought though, on the one exchange web site i'm registered on, alot of people wishing to exchange from 3 bed in birmingham, have had offers from people in places like, Devon, Cornwall etc. Do you think it would be a good idea to accept something in kingstanding or any other area that i'm not keen on and then try to exchange again before dd1 started secondary school ?????? I didn't really want to have to move twice but would do it if necersarry (spelling).

nutcracker · 18/01/2004 18:22

Also if anyone knows of any other council or housing estates that i haven't thought of please let me know. Sometimes we find little one's hidden away.

codswallop · 18/01/2004 18:37

do you want to move to cornwall? would you get a job there? If you are thnking of retraining I would o that In brum where you have family near to help out with baby sitting

OP posts:
nutcracker · 18/01/2004 18:46

I would consider moving to any nice area. Totally agree though that it would be better training here.
I'm going to phone the council tommorow about that empty house and also phone castle vale to see why i haven't heard anything considering they said i'd got alot of points.
Do you work in a secondary school now CODDY ??

codswallop · 18/01/2004 19:11
