I've decided to buy a chaning bag for my sister in law who has just had a baby girl.

I'm loving the look of \link{http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7759986905&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1\this.}

Despite having four children I have never got round to buying a designated changing bag so I'd welcome any views on this, or changing bags in general, from those of you with experience.

It's £££. I'm like you these days. Can't be bothered. Just stick a nappy, travel wipes case and two straws in my bag and off I go. Occasionally add travel bib and reins.

MrsBadger · 20/04/2006 12:19

Out of interest, if you've never used one, why would you think she might? I wonder if Experienced Mothers have a duty to buy New Mothers things that the newbies don't know they need hence would never ask for or buy for themselves. What did you find you couldn't live without?

Re changing bags in general, personally I find the cheap ones rubbish (ugly, poorly designed, badly made etc) and the expensive ones extortionate, so have never bought a purpose-built Changing Bag, but do quite like the look of the Ebay one. Would she like the pattern (all day, every day)?

Jessajam · 20/04/2006 12:20

My MIL bought me changing bag (even though I've never really wnated one) and it is black and plain and looks like a briefcase and I hardly ever use (shhh...don't tell well meaning MIL). Partly because its fugly! Partly cos it's not really big enough for everything (nappy stuff food stuff and emtertainment stuff), but too big for just nappies. If I'm heading out for a few hours I shove couple of nappies (using cloth nappies so bit bulkier to pack) and wipes and travel changing mat into a small rucksack along with coolbag wedged in with tubs of food, water, bib and spoons. Add a couple of toys and we're off....
That said, if my changing bag was a funky looking as this one, I'd probably use it!!!

spidermama · 20/04/2006 12:21

I've always fancied one.
They're not the sort of thing you can justify buying yourself though because they're pricey. But as a gift ...

Bozza · 20/04/2006 12:21

I used to use a v. small rucksack quite a lot at one point.

spidermama · 20/04/2006 12:24

I used rucksacks, or the carrying part of the back pack.

But come on let's have some support. A dedicated bag? With a matching changing mat? Mmm Hmm!

I like the bag but it is expensive. I have never used a designated changing bag - just shoved everything into a large shoulder bag! I suppose it would be handy to have compartments for things as I am always losing things at the bottom of mine...

Jessajam · 20/04/2006 12:29

Couldn't live without muzzies ( had a pukey baby), but didn't buy ANY pre-baby (was sure they were pointless, why can't you use loo roll?)so had to use VAST ammounts of loo roll until able to brave the shops! D'Oh!!! Hadn't realised that it's not just a tiny dribble that comes out of a babies mouth once or twice a day!!!!

Also a gro-bag. Again I thought - why can't I just use sheets? This is just another one of those "must haves" that you really don't need....But, I was bought one and it's great. Really useful for staying over at peoples houses and ds doesn't kick it off or over his face.

Kelly1978 · 20/04/2006 12:29

I really like it and would be very pleased to receive it. I like changing bags tho, I have three. Blush I've a jane one to match the powertwin, then an avent one for long days out as the Jane one was too small for everything, and a emmaljunga one to match the emmaljunga twin pram. I'd love a funky one like that, but dp would have a fit because it's so bright. What do you do with all the baby paraphenalia if you don't have a changing bag?

expatinscotland · 20/04/2006 12:29

We got it for free in a Huggies starter pack from Boots.

GDG · 20/04/2006 12:31

Tbh, hardly ever used mine and used a small rucksack instead. If you only have the one baby, how much stuff do you need in it? Pack of wipes, nappy, couple of nappy sacks and, if ff, one feed maybe.

\link{http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7758801100&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT\This one's} quite nice too. It's cheaper, but just not quite so special.

What do you think?

nope, like first one better.

MrsBadger · 20/04/2006 12:35

hmm.
well, maybe get her something that she definitely will need, just a really cool version of it?
I'm firmly convinced that \link{http://patemm.com/\these} are the coolest changing mats ever but would never buy one for myself - hence ideal gift. Also fold up into a small changing bag so there's the old two-birds argument...
Or a really funky swaddle? Or a sling?

GDG · 20/04/2006 12:35

Hmm, y'see, for some reason, I just don't like changing bags that look like they are a changing bag and so I'd always go for a normal bag. You could even have a really nice roomy tote bag and fit baby stuff in.

But if you really want to get one - I like both you have linked.

GDG · 20/04/2006 12:36

Now that's quite cool MrsB!

Kelly1978 · 20/04/2006 12:38

love that mat, but I never used a mat! I think a bag is more useful.

CarlyP · 20/04/2006 12:58

i had one thaty came with our buggy........
then a rattan beach type one....
then a baby bjorn hard carry case one....
then treated myself to the ultimate 'timi & leslie' car design one....

www.happybags.co.uk/inc/sdetail/1593 this style

boys are now 1.5 and 2.5 and still use it for snacks, crinks, nappies etc.

MrsBadger · 20/04/2006 13:02

[spray] at some of the prices on that site!
your one looks nice though

Nbg · 20/04/2006 13:03

Just a slight hijack

How did your SIL get on SM?
Did she have the baby in barnsley?

Love the bag btw.

CarlyP · 20/04/2006 13:06

i shopped around, first saw it at the baby show for £169....

i love it! god knows y!!! my dh wasnt soooooooo impressed, but i bought it so 'nur nur nur' to him! LOL

jellyjelly · 20/04/2006 13:12

I have always used a chaging bag and i find them really good but i dont like the print on the retro one, sorry. Some people like a rucksack other like one that will go over the bars of a buggy/shoulder.

hotmama · 20/04/2006 13:13

I use a changing bag - but it doesn't look like one IYKWIM. Brown cord one by SkipHop - got it at the Baby Show in Brum - do similar ones in JJMB and Blooming Marvellous catelogues.

I have 18 month and a 10 week dd's so just need to make sure I have got both sizes of nappies etc plus snacks for dd1.

Helpful to have a changing mat in etc - so for me I think they are good things - but have pared down over time what I take out - used to take the kitchen sink! Wink

Will she like the design - cos bit of a personal choice thing? Smile

MadamePlatypus · 20/04/2006 13:19

We used a biker's messenger bag. They usually have loads of compartments and you can chuck them in the washing machine. Also, Monsieur Platypus didn't feel stupid using it.
