I've decided to buy a chaning bag for my sister in law who has just had a baby girl.

I'm loving the look of \link{http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7759986905&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1\this.}

Despite having four children I have never got round to buying a designated changing bag so I'd welcome any views on this, or changing bags in general, from those of you with experience.

I bought one from www.debbychick.co.uk

weekend size bag is just perfect for me and you can choose which fabric you like best

eidsvold · 20/04/2006 13:40

have used a rucksack - when I had the two of them out and about all the time etc - have had a black one from mother care ( came with things in it) - still going strong 4 years later.... now use a small rucksack - just enough for a nappy each and some snacks.... but big day out - back to sports rucksack. dh happy to carry rucksack and mothercare nappy bag was the messenger style that meant I could sling it over the back of the pram and not worry about...

so bought the bit and bobs to go in one - bottle carrier, change mat etc but just did not buy a nice nappy bag.

eidsvold · 20/04/2006 13:40

maybe if I have another one I will buy myself a snazzy one that looks like a handbag style that I can fit everything in.

ggglimpopo · 20/04/2006 13:41

Don't use one. Realised after baby no 2 that I didn't need one.

Kathy1972 · 20/04/2006 13:48

I have to use a rucksack because I never feel like I have enough hands at the best of times. (Wouldn't have mattered so much if we'd used a buggy more though - we tended to use a front carrier.)
Used an ordinary old one for months then my brother got me a gorgeous Maclaren one for Xmas with loads of compartments.
Best thing about it is that it's smart enough to take anywhere but can equally come hiking with us so we don't have to mess about moving things from one to the other.
Spidermama, that's lovely - I'm sure your SIL would be thrilled. A really nice changing bag is a great present because you use it such a lot but can't necessarily justify the money yourself.

Imafairy · 20/04/2006 13:55

Had about three - a butch looking one DH could use, and a couple of girlie ones for me. thought they were a total waste of time - they were all really big on the outside, but with no suitable space on the inside. We were then given a present of a folding changing mat/nappy holder thing \link{http://www.bloomingmarvellous.co.uk/product.aspx?CategoryID=ChangingBags&ProductID=5445&language=en-GB}\like this}, but in black and from the GLTC which was fab, so I dumped the changing bags and invested in a very nice trendy (and expensive Wink) handbag to put it in!!!

TheBlonde · 20/04/2006 14:24

I have a skip hop changing bag - quite good. Also one from Gap and then two other bags used for nappies etc. I treat them like hangbags and I need the right size etc depending on where we are going etc

Would deffo recommend skip hop one

beckybrastraps · 20/04/2006 14:34

The trouble with the patterned bags is that if you're actually carrying them (as opposed to sticking them under the pram) they might clash with what you're wearing. Not something I would have worried about in the early days, but certainly would have later on. And if you have more than one, you have all the faff of decanting from on to the other. I had (and still use) a plain leather rucksack which did the job, and didn't look like a changing bag.

beansontoast · 20/04/2006 14:44

i didnt have a special changing bag (like things to have twelve different functions) but im sure i would have made every effort to use one that GORGEOUS.

...would her blokey (?) feel a bit conspicuous with it?

alexsmum · 20/04/2006 14:48

our changing bag was a navy rucksack thing from mothercare.pockets and a mat and a messy pouch with it.
it's dull but practical and big enough for everything.

spidermama · 20/04/2006 14:54

Hi nbg. Yes she had the baby in Barnsley. She resisted intervention several times along the way. Ventouse but no drugs Shock! Feeding well and looking serene.

LOVE the mat MrsBadge. So cool! I didn't use a mat for long either though.

Good point about getting a male friendly bag platy. How cool to use a biker bag.

Becky you're right about the possibility of clashing. In fact, there isn't actually much that bag wouldn't clash with.

Oh BUM! Back to the drawing board then. Thanks for stopping me ladies.

Cant stand the idea of a huge bright changing bag! (Sorry!) I like using my own bag and just add few bits I need ie nappy wipes and a cup of water, the bare min. I have a black rucksack in the car full of everything I need too, so if I take the car I dont have to carry any extra bits.

Having visions of baby group I used to go to with first time mums and they all had suitcase sized changing bags with a whole weeks worth of kit inside lol!

Nbg · 20/04/2006 15:00

Awwww thats great news Smile

As for changing bag, we had and still do have a plain black record type bag from Mothercare.
Great for dh as it was plain and he could carry it without looking like a pansy as he would say.
It has a changing mat, bottle bag, and a nappy bag.
It has 2 main compartments with another zip pocket at the front.

It had long straps so it could be carried anyway without being a nuisance.

CarlyP · 20/04/2006 16:21

must say, have never been concerned about my BAG clashing with what im wearing.......strange

Hazellnut · 20/04/2006 16:32

I'm quite a fan of bags in general, and change bags as a result !

I have had 2 proper change bags in 15 months - a shang hai one which was lovely - \link{http://www.purpur.co.uk/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=262\here}. Very roomy but its made of silky material so pulled really badly.

My second one was a skip hop bag which I loved BUT I have just shut one of the clasps in the car door so I can no longer use it with the clips that clip it to a buggy so kind of almost useless and they aren't cheap. So am not so keen on it now....

So I am on the look out for a new change bag !! Am trialling a normal rucksack but it just doesn't seem to do it for me but maybe I'll just treat myself to a nice new big handbag and see how that goes now dd is older and requires less....

I personally think a change bag is a great present and my first one was one of leaving presents from work (but I chose it) but they are very personal... could you ask her what she'd like ???

TheBlonde · 20/04/2006 19:25

Hazellnut - you should email them and see if they can send you a new clasp

Hazellnut · 20/04/2006 19:28

thanks blonde - I might try that although, I did look at it incase such a thing could be gotten hold of (thats exceedingly bad enlgish I know) and not sure it would be possible to re-attach.. will have another look and email them in case they are able to suggest something else... all excited now...

plastic carrier bag from your favoured Supermarket will do!!!!

secur · 20/04/2006 19:52

I use an Asda bag, because I am really into recycling (?) and there is a never ending supply of replacements so I never have to wash it or worry if I leave it behind. Maybe not so good as a pressie though Grin

secur · 20/04/2006 19:53

That'll teach me for typing so slow Grin
