summer is coming and i'm sure all good mothers are now wondering what their little darlings will be wearing on the beach this year....

do we go for:

the neoprene stay warm option? (note: no nappy insert)

the baby swimsuit/trunks (with built in nappy)

the sun protection suit (no nappy)

bog standard trunks/costume

just a swim nappy

nothing

obviously will be using sun cream and a gigantic hat..... your thoughts please, on this pressing issue!

I love those sunsuits for little ones (under 4s) - means their shoulders are protected nicely. They also hold up soggy swim nappies quite nicely

but then I was brought up in the sarthern hemisphere where we are much better with this sun lark

TinyGang · 18/04/2006 10:35

I keep a load of old t shirts on hand for the beach if they look like they need shoulders covering. Sun cream and a hat too. All blondies here.

Bugsy2 · 18/04/2006 10:42

Factor 50 & that's about it.
Don't have them out there in the middle of the day when it is baking hot and enjoy them having a lovely time on the beach.

alexsmum · 18/04/2006 10:51

friends mum has just had skin cancer removed from face.she asked if it had beeb triggered by recent trip to very hot sunny holiday place.doctor said had it had started about 30 years before.
so yes exposing them too much now can have an effect later!

sharklet · 18/04/2006 10:54

We got a shade a babe for our pushchair for summer outings. My freinds have used one ont he beach with thier baby they are a great Australian invention well worth having if your a hot holiday person!

They should be as out of the sun as possible imho my uncle has lost most of his face due to skin cancer so its a big concern to me.

georginarf · 18/04/2006 11:10

if my DD was doing something that required being in constant direct sunlight then the suit would be a good idea - when she's a bit older and wanting to be more active on the beach (and we're living in NZ) I guess we might get them. but at just over one she wasn't spending hours there anyway.

we spent most of the time in NZ saying 'hat ON' and holding it on with our hands, and keeping her under a sunshade. am very aware of the dangers of the sun as almost all my family who grew up in NZ have had some sort of melanoma removed.

mind you for all the sun 'hysteria' in Oz and NZ they seem to get pretty good tans anyway! so would prob still please cod anyhow

joelalie · 18/04/2006 11:20

Factor 30ish suncream and trunks. Tee-shirts for the hottest part of the day. Hats get taken to the beach but never worn Angry. We don't spend hours on the beach anyway and usually find somewhere with shade and I can't stand too much sun let alone the kids.

PandaG · 18/04/2006 11:23

If anyone wants a sunsuit - and fwiw my two wear them on the beach in this country, I had a mole removed when younger, and I am in the UK - Sainsbury's have them for about £8, shorts and tops ones in blues, and an allin one in pink spots. I find them much easier than trying to sun cream all over.

Bugsy2 · 18/04/2006 11:25

I always think that it is worth remembering that the generation of people who are developing or have developed melanomas were those who used no suncream at all, and were actively trying to get a tan. There is also often a genetic link too.

So while I think it is very important to protect children and ourselves, I don't think we need to be paranoid either.

poppiesinaline · 18/04/2006 11:26

Read somewhere last year that ricketts is on the increase because people dont let their kids have enough sunlight Shock

Flum - tan in a bottle carcinogenic? really??

Tortington · 18/04/2006 12:06

tshirt and a nappy with a hat and suncream

CKMUM · 18/04/2006 12:47

misdee, although expensive, i find organic childrens sun cream is the best for not causing skin irritation. I get it from naturalchild.co.uk

bubblerock · 18/04/2006 12:52

I've got a \link{http://www.nozone.ca/one_piece_ksuits_c.htm\NoZone} Bubbles, from Canada sunsuit age 12m if anyone wants it - £5 inc postage.

Blu · 18/04/2006 12:54

When we take Ds to his family we just do what the locals do - sit and play in the shade, wear thin, loose, cotton cover-up clothes, and keep lut of the sun in the middle of the day. That is much better in mediterranean climates, too - if the kids have a siesta, you can all go out to dinner a bit later.

But we will be in the uk this year, so DS will wear his fleece on the beach, mostly.

CKMUM · 18/04/2006 13:25

I am hoping my girls will keep their sun hats onthis year too. The eldest used to get really distressed and take hers off straight away and I got one with straps that fasten under the chin and she still managed to take it off; I was stopping every 2 seconds to put it back on, although I hate the heat so don't normally go out unless I have to anyway.

I have bought some for this year and they both get excited when I put them on although I couldn't get any that fasten under the chin. So I am hoping as they like wearing them they will stay on. Thank goodness my tandem pushchair is fixed though; they pull each others hats off so it would be difficult in the side by side buggy

beetroot · 18/04/2006 14:00

Blu, we do similar to you...(although we have been known to strip of)

BUT we do do siestas. It makes for happy kids in the evening. Always sleep for atleast 2 hours after lunch.

ghosty · 19/04/2006 21:34

I have two nearly new sunsuits too, actually if anyone wants one ... CAT me if you do, not sure what you would want to pay for them ... I paid $20 for them but DD grew out of them too quickly ... so a couple of quid?

Size 1 ... DD only wore it once ... she was and still is a biggun! I would say it would fit a large 6 month old nicely
Size 2 ... That was pretty snug too ... would fit a large 1 year old , average sized 18 month old, minute 2 year old Grin

Coddy, do you wan 'em? Grin

eidsvold · 19/04/2006 22:50

CKMUM - our dd1 was a horror for wearing hats - even with chin straps etc..

what seems to work is to get a hat that is a lttle loose and it seems to be okay - has a chin strap and pull up toggle but she is more than happy to have her hat on. I think the others felt strange against her head iyswim. SHe is 3 yo and I got her a hat that was for 4 - 6. Now she plays with and wears hats all the time.... this is from a little one who would just chuck it off that minute it touched her head.

poppadum · 19/04/2006 23:04

No sunscreen, ordinary swimsuits, and no hats if they don't want to wear them. The sunshine here is not worth the effort of putting on any of these.
