I saw some newspaper pictures of Kylie Minogue a couple of days ago looking well, happy and elfin with her post-chemo short hair. My immediate reaction was 'aaah, that's fantastic' Smile
I know I would feel pleased for anyone recovering from cancer but what is it about someone like Kylie that makes her so popular with everyone. I've yet to meet anyone who (although obviously without knowing her, dislikes her, IYSWIM) Am I making sense so far??!
I would say that Liza Tarbuck and Mariella Frostrup would fit the bill also but definitely not Angelina Jolie. Why is this and who else can you think of? If you can be arsed, that is. Blush Grin

bubble99 · 16/04/2006 19:26

Mr Bubble would add Barney from CBBC but not the other one who sounds like a young Alan Partridge. Matt??

cant stand kylies voice and music either!think it is that people like kylie and liza tarbuck are portrayed as really down to earth people, and the ones like angelina are portrayed to be husband snatchers!!Grinbet you all teh fellas will say they think kylie and angelina are great but would prob say liza isnt!!

bubble99 · 16/04/2006 19:29

Cod, remove the voice and the music from your mind. OK, not much left but DYKWIM?
Danni Minogue is the total opposite would trample on anyone, I reckon.

I did warn you that this would be superficial.

Kylie is one of us as in she is the same age as many of us on mumsnet, she's been around for ages and she gives us hope that we can look great at our age.

Lisa is clever, funny and sexy in a way we can all identify with and hope to be like Grin

Mariella is wise and intelligent and very sexy and is mates with GEORGE CLOONEY!!!So we would all like to be like herGrin

bubble99 · 16/04/2006 19:32

So is it that they're non-threatening??

Not a fan of Kylie's stuff either, BTW. I'm more interested in the whole cult of 'sleb' and why we elevate them to where they are and also their shopping habits. Wink

This by Victoria Coren was in the Observer today:

(Applies to everybody but cod, obv Grin)

Flossam · 16/04/2006 19:33

Controversial here - but although I hated her for a little while (OK perhaps hate is too strong a word but you get the gist), A/J isn't all that bad. I now blame Brad. I hope that A/J is happy, and although she is mildly raving mad don't think she is out to harm people, to the contrary, wants to help and thinks she can.

Kylie, well I have grown up with her being around. She just seems like a nice girl, although I am sure I have heard diva type things about her before.

expatinscotland · 16/04/2006 19:35

Kylie's all right. But I want to get medieval on Barney. :o

Flossam · 16/04/2006 19:35

do women like Britney? DP and I were discussing her yesterday.

Janh · 16/04/2006 19:36

I want to look after Britney - she shouldn't be out on her own Smile

expatinscotland · 16/04/2006 19:38

kylie at least has a modicum of class. can't say the same for britney.

bubble99 · 16/04/2006 19:39

Barney's grown some facial hair, expat, what do you reckon? Also, please explain medieval!

Hmmm. Britney?? No feelings either way as she doesn't seem to have enough 'substance'.

How about Catherine Zeta Jones??

OP posts:
Flossam · 16/04/2006 19:42

If DP is representative she has ruined her image by being see out and about in, well, not particularly good outfits. Now I know pre and post baby that is the norm, I certainly was and still am a state, but then I do not have Britneys fame, money and image to uphold.

So if men have gone off her and women still don't like her how is she going to have a successful career??

Flossam · 16/04/2006 19:42

CZJ - fake and disingenious (sp)

expatinscotland · 16/04/2006 19:43

i'd like to torch barney, for ex. or blow him up. :o

britters - she's on the road to tragic.

bubble99 · 16/04/2006 19:49

I fear it is tumbleweed time for Britney's career, Floss.

I hate the term but some women seem to be 'men's women' and vice versa. Do women generally dislike/distrust 'men's women'?

Flossam · 16/04/2006 19:52

As someone who got chatted up by five blokes on Thursday night I'm not sure I am qualified to comment.......WinkGrinWink

ItalianJob · 16/04/2006 19:55

I have far more time for Britney as a young mum with a dodgy partner than I ever did for her as a teen queen.

Flossam · 16/04/2006 19:56

seriously though I think women do feel threatened. But do you feel as threatened by someone not considered attractive but blokes still enjoy spending time with.

I can give you an example, DP once slept with a girl who was a friend, and which was very much a mistake. She hung around with his group of male friends and they didn't mind IYSWIM. When I came on the scene, she made it very clear she'd still quite like DP, even to the extent of barging past me at midnight to give DP the first kiss. But she was overweight and not very attractive and I never felt threatened. Was good for a giggle on new years day! Grin

bubble99 · 16/04/2006 19:56

But you are a beauty with brains and a sense of Da Sistahood, Floss. Smile
