Superficial thread alert. Why do some people appeal to both genders and others not?

I saw some newspaper pictures of Kylie Minogue a couple of days ago looking well, happy and elfin with her post-chemo short hair. My immediate reaction was 'aaah, that's fantastic' Smile
I know I would feel pleased for anyone recovering from cancer but what is it about someone like Kylie that makes her so popular with everyone. I've yet to meet anyone who (although obviously without knowing her, dislikes her, IYSWIM) Am I making sense so far??!
I would say that Liza Tarbuck and Mariella Frostrup would fit the bill also but definitely not Angelina Jolie. Why is this and who else can you think of? If you can be arsed, that is. Blush Grin

Probably not Floss, because I would probably get on with someone like that too.

I'm not makng much sense here, am I?

So basically jealousy has to come into it.

I loathe Liza Tarbuck. She sets my teeth on edge.

bubble99 · 16/04/2006 20:10

But Kylie's universally accepted as being attractive at least and I wouldn't feel threatened if DH was left on a desert island with her so it can't be that, can it.

Actually maybe I should be kinder to Angelina Jolie et al. Maybe there is a reason why she seems (according to the media, which I accept is unreliable) to need to acquire all of her male co-stars.

I'm being un-sistall(?)y here, I suspect.

I like Davina McCall, but reckon she's not well liked by a lot of woman.

Greensleeves · 16/04/2006 20:12

Er - not quite universally. I think she looks like a vole.

KAZ09 · 16/04/2006 20:12

Women - i meant

bubble99 · 16/04/2006 20:12

Greensleeves. Stop throwing a spannner into the works of my shaky argument/viewpoint. Grin

I did say 'attractive at least'.

And what do you have against voles?? Huh?? Grin

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 16/04/2006 20:13

I think alot has to do with the media portrayal and their PR.

Flossam · 16/04/2006 20:13

Hmm, take your point about Kylie. But then, it isn't her personality which appeals to men is it?? Where as maybe it does to women. I think women don't like women who act like they are men might in their attitudes to sex, relationships and families. Does that make sense?

bubble99 · 16/04/2006 20:15

Stop being the voice of reason, foxy. Angry Grin

I am trying to have a totally unreasonable fashion/lifestyle/pseudo-psychological bitchfest here.

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 16/04/2006 20:16

that makes sense Floss

foxinsocks · 16/04/2006 20:17

oh sorry bubble Blush

I shall add then that Liza Tarbuck really gets on my tits and I did snigger that Davina's chat show did so badly

(is that bitchy enough?)

also, I can't stand the fact that I cannot open a TV mag or turn on the telly without seeing Tamzin bloody Outhwaite

NotAnOtter · 16/04/2006 20:17

think its about jealousy...women who seem not to have flaws are the ones we dont like....flawed ones we can all relate to!

bubble99 · 16/04/2006 20:19

I think it is her personality which appeals to men as much as her pert butt. Envy

DH reckons that she's a down-to-earth aussi and they are generally well-liked.

OP posts:
bubble99 · 16/04/2006 20:20

I'm also Blush to say that I was secretly pleased that Davina's show flopped. How horrible is that???? Blush

OP posts:
bubble99 · 16/04/2006 20:21

Good point, NAO. But Angelina strikes me as deeply flawed, just not physically.

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 16/04/2006 20:23

if it makes you feel any better, she did get paid £280k for the eight chat shows and given how poorly they did, I doubt she'll have to do any more!

I did feel a bit horrible for sniggering but it's not like she didn't get a shedload of dosh upfront

bubble99 · 16/04/2006 20:26

From whence did our sniggers come though, foxy?

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 16/04/2006 20:28

I don't know - I think it's the thought of someone who is successful/well-known/has-it-all falling on their arse (she says shamefully)

bubble99 · 16/04/2006 20:30

And falling on a pert, buffed and cellulite-free arse, to boot. Envy Grin

Janh · 16/04/2006 20:38

Kylie does not look like a vole. Gail Tilsley looks like a vole (or worse).

She (Gail, not Kylie) is big buddies with Joan Collins, I found out yesterday Shock

expatinscotland · 16/04/2006 20:46

i like kylie's style sense. b/c she's short and petite so if she's wearing a certain look it's easy enough to see if it'll work for me, too, although after two kids i'm nowhere as narrow-hipped as she is.

i think she's improved style wise since she started going out w/oliver. mmmmmmm. he's TASTY.
