Am nearly 37 and what with one thing and another have managed to put off learning to drive. I know life would be a lot easier if I learnt but still have a sick feeling in my stomach when I think about lessons or possibly going out on my own in the car with two children. Has anyone ever learnt to drive this late? Will this sick feeling go away? Five years ago I was in an accident while cycling where a lorry almost crushed me.Not surprisingly I'm very nervous when buses or trucks come near our car (that's just when I'm a passenger). Has anyone else been this nervous? Would hypnotherapy help?

Well done Rhubarb and Anais - congratulations to you both!

anais · 09/07/2003 20:47

Thanks, everyone, it is great to be able just to get into the car and go when I want to

Rhubarb · 09/07/2003 22:17

Oooh, that's a thought, I don't have a car!

anais · 09/07/2003 22:31

Awww, Rhubarb, I guess that does make life difficult.

WideWebWitch · 10/07/2003 11:45

Well done Rhubarb, great news! Enjoy your gloating!

Well done you lot but oh I'm so jealous of you!! I wish I could fast forward the next 25 lessons and pass my test too.

I've had 4 lessons so far and today's was the worst. Stall? I could have been a bloody church fete.

Well done ks! I will look out for you on the roads around here - do you have P plates?

It gets easier with practise, believe me within a few weeks you'll be whizzing in and out of parking spaces!

Please don't drive on Saturday night!

anais · 21/08/2003 21:49

It's fantastic, this being able to drive isn't it? I love it!

Although not so good this morning - my neighbour called over the fence to me this morning that they's picked up the pieces of my wing mirror off the pavement It was my drivers side mirror, and there's no way it was an accident. some little $**t has broken it off and been playing football with the bloomin thing. I am still furious that someone would do something like that just for the fun of it. Fortunately the garage were great and were able to stick the plastic bit back on, so I only had to pay for the glass.

But what's the betting it will happen again in the next few weeks...

well done ks. I remember the sense of achievement I had when I first drove a car by myself. I found it such a huge novelty being able to drive out of london wherever and whenever I wanted. It took ages to build up my confidence, I was so aware that I had all this new power at my disposal. My oldest son was a toddler at the time and I went on an obsessive hunt for all the child orientated places in Kent and Sussex. We were such day trippers. Have fun!

I see on another thread that you are soon moving to the countryside, so even more reason to be able to drive.

tigermoth · 22/08/2003 09:42

anais, I used to have to park my car in a narrow street and I can't count the number of times I found my wing mirror damaged or off in the morning. Drivers just did not judge the width of the road correctly. It's even more of a shame if you think someone actually pulled off your wing mirror on purpose.

Ks, well done! Brilliant! As someone learning to drive - someone who vowed she never would (far too scary), this thread gives me much hope.

WSM · 08/10/2003 10:16

I passed my test years ago and then lost my license due to a speeding conviction or 2. I now have to retake my tests (I can't beleive that there is now so much new stuff to do - hazard perception ?!). I've got my theory on Oct 25th and I really must pass it as my DH is the most awful 'crowing driver' and I'll never live it down if I fail ! Best of luck Coneely
