Am nearly 37 and what with one thing and another have managed to put off learning to drive. I know life would be a lot easier if I learnt but still have a sick feeling in my stomach when I think about lessons or possibly going out on my own in the car with two children. Has anyone ever learnt to drive this late? Will this sick feeling go away? Five years ago I was in an accident while cycling where a lorry almost crushed me.Not surprisingly I'm very nervous when buses or trucks come near our car (that's just when I'm a passenger). Has anyone else been this nervous? Would hypnotherapy help?

Took my mock test yesterday and was amazed that i passed, mind you i had 15 minor faults so i only just did it.I was convinced i failed when i never stopped at a zebra crossing when someone had just stepped on to it, got 10 more hours lessons before the real test so im quitely confident , well more like praying that i will pass.

Well the big day is almost here my test is tomorrow, got another 2 hour lesson this afternoon. And its just my luck to have the last test of the day on a friday afternoon, heres hoping by tomorrow eve i will be a fully fledged independant driver, either that or i will be very pi*d of and will have to resort to a bottle of wine to console myself.

GeorginaA · 30/11/2002 13:56

Congratulations!!!!! It's a great sense of freedom to be able to drive, isn't it? I learnt to drive years ago but then we didn't have a car for a long time. I recently did a refresher course with BSM so I could drive our car while dh is working away during the week - it's like a whole new life!

GeorginaA · 02/12/2002 17:18

Fantastic news, ks!!!!

I was going to post a smug post today something along the lines of I actually managed to parallel park my car (the whole thought of parallel parking scares the hell out of me, so this has been a big fear) - okay, the gap was about 2 car lengths so it should have been easy anyway, but I managed it without much thought process which feels like a big achievement... then I managed to stall the car just parking it in front of our garage, so that kind of put me back in my place

bossykate · 02/12/2002 17:55

Well done KS, its such a brilliant feeling isnt it? The highlight was driving to Adsa durieng the day with no kids and dh at work and being able to buy as much as i wanted to, eithout worrying about how i will get back on the bus.

ariel · 03/12/2002 09:35

Mind you dh is not as pleased, since passing i love going out so theres 5 days of washing and ironing piling up!!!!

I know dealers are a bit intimidating but they do have one advantage - they usually have some sort of guarantee on the vehicle (and don't forget you can still get the AA or RAC to check a vehicle bought from a dealer).

No, I don't and never have worked for a second hand car dealer, or have any other connections, but didn't think you should totally rule them out
