I'm having 13 people for dinner in a few weeks and it has made me realise what a total hodge-podge we have of plates, tumblers, wine glasses, cups etc. What's the largest number of a single item in your house? we do have 12 matching plates which seems very impressive to me.

2 white pasta bowls.

Most of our stuff has matching chips tho

Distel · 24/03/2006 18:47

We have 4 matching dinner plates, your right, 12 is impressive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 24/03/2006 18:48

6 place dinner set. That is still complete at the moment!

other than that - 4 tumblers that match, 6 champagne glasses that match and thats about it - not even my cutlery matches anymore.

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 24/03/2006 18:49

is that oven chips or home-made?

24 matching dinner plates Grin . everything else is 8. (We have a dinner service on our wedding list and 3 different lots of people bought 8 plates each as it wasn't removed from the list when the first lot bought it.

BettySpaghetti · 24/03/2006 18:56

8 of everything -we had a horrible old set for years that we always said we'd get rid of when we broke something and, guess what, never broke anything! Of course the newer set of 8 of everything has a few chips already.

Manchesvertes · 24/03/2006 18:59

5 matching plates I think, it used to be 9 but 4 got smashed... we bought them for Christmas dinner. I don't really do matching crockery... we collect odd mugs and eggcups and silly teapots and all that.

I am Very Naff. Grin

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 24/03/2006 19:07

the other thing that's bugging me (inasmuch as these things can, this whole dinner thing is bringing my shallowness out) is that I don;t really like any of it. Our plates are Denby and about 10 years out of fashion (guess how long we've been married); and most of our wine glasses are cut crystal, which I can't bear - that was an extremely generous wedding present from a relative but I have never liked the stuff. ungrateful aren't I. I'm so tempted to go and buy some cheap but lovely plain white plates and plain glasses but my conscious won't let me. too much northern thrift in me. it's all my mum's fault.

OP posts:
CHICilyalaMAMAN · 24/03/2006 19:17

Ours is white too, its the best idea because even if the exact service is discontinued it isn't too hard to find pretty much the same thing elswhere to replace anything that gets broken.

lilibet · 24/03/2006 19:52

Yep, all plain white here too, actual matches not very many as they are a mix of ikea/argos/tesco and asda but in the candlelight and once they have food on them no one can ever tell.

You can het plain white plates for about £1 each, it's hardly going to break the bank? Smile

SenoraPostrophe · 24/03/2006 19:53

I like a hodge podge. we have 4 matching plates but only because none have broken. matching plates are for saps.

Have 6 of most stuff, although DH broke a plate recently. Only have the Ikea white range though in this so easy and cheap to replace :) Have sets of 6 glasses in various types - simple designs from john Lewis, but again not dear. Did have loads of expensive Royal Doulton for wedding but the crystal wasn't really to mine of Dh's taste and we ended up breaking some of each set anyway - given rest away now!

I need a visit to Ikea to buy some more to add to our existing sets really.

SenoraPostrophe · 24/03/2006 19:56

oh yes, actually we do have several matching wine glasses too. i will buy different ones when they break.

Kelly1978 · 24/03/2006 20:13

Shock @ CHICilyalaMAMAN
I don't have 24 plates full stop!
We have an 'best' dinner set with 4 of everything and cheap ikea white stuff with 4 of everything for the kids. That is it.

I don't like these french names, I don't know who anyone is ne more!!!!

motherinferior · 24/03/2006 20:32

We have lots and lots and lots and lots of matching bog-standard wine glasses, on account of sometimes having parties.

Also a set of ten (I think) glass sundae dishes or suchlike which I picked up in the local charity shop for three quid the other day.

And a few other bits from the charity shop (three blue espresso cups, two very small charming glasses) that match. And a pair of espresso mugs that have complementing Moomintroll characters (the Snork Maiden and Moominpappa), does that count?

Otherwise, nada. In fact I was an adult when I realised that most people have matching plates.

Prufrock · 24/03/2006 20:49

8 of everything -plates, side plates, bowls, pasta bowls, soup bowls, 3 different sized cups and saucers. All white, all wedding presents from Conran - we've only broken one bowl in 7 years (and I've replaced that). I also have another 10 plates and bowls from Homebase that are indistinguishable (and a tenth of the price) that I bought so I could do Xmas Dinner for 17. Also dead cheap set of 24 pasta bowls and 4 serving bowls that came off the back of a friends lorry and have proved invaluable for parties. Glasses - 8 each of red wine, white wine, champagne, liqueur and shots all the same style - and 2 tumblers - for some reason they kept breaking. An 8 place and a 12 place cutlery set - minus a few teaspoons.

Do I win the prize for anal retentiveness? I cannot stand non matching stuff - I even make sure that the kids have cups teh smae colour as their bowl from the multicolured spotty melamine set Blush

Nbg · 24/03/2006 20:51

We have an 8 piece set that was one of our wedding pressies. We bought an extra 2 sets sat in the loft so if any of them break we can replace them.
So 10 piece set really.

PandaG · 24/03/2006 20:52

We have 10 of everything - got married v young and chose cheap crockery on wedding list, and got 8 of most things then. we have bought the items we didn't get, and when having a dinner party fior 9 decided to go out and buy more so we had 10 of everything, means we have spaer for breakages. Our set is plain white, and our everyday set is white too (thinking about it we have 12 of everything in this, Tesco were doing 4 place settings [mug, plate, bowl & sideplate] for a fiver so we stocked up!), so we can use both together when the need arises.

FrannyQuiMangeLaQuinoa · 24/03/2006 20:52

I don't think we have 12 plates. Ok, who am I kidding, I know we don't have 12 plates.

I think we may have 6 plates that match. 3 of them match one set, and 3 of them match another :)

expatinscotland · 24/03/2006 20:53

none. it's all a hodgepodge of charity shop finds and IKEA.

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 24/03/2006 20:54

ok. So where do I go to get the best cheap white plates - tesco? Homebase? BHS? Someone say BHS as there's one walking distance from my house.
