How do people's appearances affect the way you view / treat them?

This is probably a difficult question to answer objectively but I'm interested.

For example - would you be likely to have sympathy with someone / cut someone slack if they were obviously pregnant?

Do people's age / clothes / weight have a bearing on how you treat them or views you may form about them either consciously or subconsciously?

Joash, do you often tell people your poo-related stories though? Grin

joash · 23/03/2006 22:41

good for your friend expat. Hope all goes well for her ... bit drastic though. I'm too much of a coward Grin.

have also had some really nasty comments about psoriasis made to me, its not always noticeabl on my face but when it is im really self conscious i was working in a pub and a customer actually asked my what the f**k was up with my face and i shouldnt be allowed out as it put him off his drink! then he complained to the manager! funny though a few weeks later when i was out wearing a figure hugging top it wasnt my face he was looking at! he didnt even realise i was the same person!

joash · 23/03/2006 22:42

only once they've got to know me Grin.

Off out with a couple of guys from college at the end of april. Got a couple of friends coming down from yorkshire as well. I've warned the guys that they're in for a shock ... they think I'm reasonably well behaved Shock.

The only person I have ever wanted to ask to leave my restaurant was a chap who looked awful and scruffy and brought a dog with him.

Turned out he was a Swiss billionaire who owned all the properties around us in Tuscany! Blush

i am very judegmental in peoples appearances! but I do hide it well too.

expatinscotland · 23/03/2006 22:45

why do people think you're a cleaner? that's seems far out to me. the whole 'you are where you live' thing escapes me.

notasheep · 23/03/2006 22:45

The richest people here wear the muddiest wellies to the pub

joash · 23/03/2006 22:46

collision - didn't you get a tip them Grin

expatinscotland · 23/03/2006 22:46

bill gates used to go around malls - when he was rich but before his face was so recongisable - dressed like a scrub and see how he got treated. then out them all.

:o

SorenLorensen · 23/03/2006 22:46

I went to M&Ts for years though and never got invited anywhere - I put it down to not seeming like I needed to be invited anywhere - you know, self-sufficient, got plenty of friends, not short of playdates etc. Are you sure you don't give off that same vibe?

joash · 23/03/2006 22:46

me too - expat - me too

collision - didn't you get a tip then Grin

joash · 23/03/2006 22:46

ooopps

expatinscotland · 23/03/2006 22:46

oprah winfrey was not allowed into the hermes shop in paris.

nulnulcat · 23/03/2006 22:47

but my minging bikini wax customer was a different story! i did think she was a dirty slapper! and i think you would have all judged her on her appearance!!

joash · 23/03/2006 22:47

oh no - I deliberately go out of my way to be friendly - not pushy - just to wind them up because I can see how uncomfrotable they are.

And as I've said, the number of people that I've got to know well over the past decade or so that have admitted how they felt when they first met me is unbeleivable.

expatinscotland · 23/03/2006 22:48

oh boak, nul! she was truly minging.

joash · 23/03/2006 22:49

wot's this about a bikini wax customer ... have I missed something?

expatinscotland · 23/03/2006 22:49

well as long as someone isn't obviously stinking drunk or high i can't say i really care. i've got close, true friends from all walks of life, all sizes, whatever. i'm a gobby freak so it's good having lots of folks around.

expatinscotland · 23/03/2006 22:50

oh god, joash, i hope you haven't eaten, nul's customer is truly barfilicious

nulnulcat · 23/03/2006 22:50

you missed the minging work stories joash!! im a beautician and i had a customer come in for a wax she hadnt washed and stunk of fish!! and had clearly had a shag the night before as the evidence was crusted onto her thighs!!

nulnulcat · 23/03/2006 22:51

as expat said i hope you werent eating :o

expatinscotland · 23/03/2006 22:51

then she wanted to have her minging feet seen to.

expatinscotland · 23/03/2006 22:51

bet the bloke had sucked her toes. mmmmm.

joash · 23/03/2006 22:51

yeah me too. I can be lots of different things at different times, but admit to being one of the obnoxious drunks (about once a year) that you'd probably hate.

nulnulcat · 23/03/2006 22:52

i would have much respect for anyone that would not have judged that woman!!!!!
