A little favour to ask...

Please please don't think I am doing anything here that is anything like any past threads that involved trying to poach Mners into rivals sites...

But the favour is this. For years I have been involved is a very small little online Community called BabyBaby UK.. it is completely Unlike MN in Every Way and could never compete in a million years.. but we have had fewer and fewer hits in recent months and was wondering if some of you might be interested in taking a look.. \link{http://www.babybabyuk.com/forums/index.php\BabyBabyUK} because we are starting to think that maybe we are flogging a dead horse. A few of us have put a lot into this site over the years and we do think it has something to offer, especially for posters that don't enjoy being pounced on (even in a friendly way! :)) by a lot of posters on a site with LOADS of hits (like MN).. and although we never aimed to be anything more than a small friendly community, it's getting to the stage where we are wondering if we should call it a day.

It's never going to be a site that you would suddenly want to use INSTEAD of MN (perish the though! Shock :)) but if people would take look, maybe consider registering, and looking in occasionally, we would be very grateful. And if not.. thanks for reading. And please don't go ballastic anyone and say I am being underhand and out of order Grin.. because I'm really not.

SJ x

Shock ...... Shock

SleepyJess · 18/03/2006 19:25

IS that out of order??! I was hoping not..!! Blush BBUK really is not going to compete in a million years....

OP posts:
hunkermunker · 18/03/2006 19:27

SJ, I just had a look, but I really don't like sites where you have to register before you can read any posts so won't be going any further. Sorry.

SleepyJess · 18/03/2006 19:28

Thanks for looking anyway Hunker x

OP posts:
hunkermunker · 18/03/2006 19:29

S'OK - sorry if that sounds rude, but I thought it might help explain why it's not getting as many hits or visits?

Boopert · 18/03/2006 19:30

I'll register SJ

Hayls · 18/03/2006 19:31

Not out of order imo. I did have a quick look and the layout and everything else seems quite good but I tend to agree with unkermunker in that I like to have a good nosy before deciding if I want t join or not. Also, I don't think I have any spare time to look on Mumsnet let alone any other sites (yet I always find some!)
Do bump this SleepyJess, I'm sure some people will be interested

TearsBeforeBedtime · 18/03/2006 19:31

I'll check the site out SJ. I suspect that this thread might be sailing a bit close to the wind though, in terms of advertising something that is very similar in type (if not size to MN)

SleepyJess · 18/03/2006 19:31

No it didn't sound rude! It was construction critisism Hunker! I am going to look into getting that changed.. altho am sure they was a reason it was set that way in the first place..

And thanks Boopert.. :) x

OP posts:
TearsBeforeBedtime · 18/03/2006 19:32

SJ - I would imagine it's set up like that to protect members' privacy, surely?

Boopert · 18/03/2006 19:33

Done. Will have a lookie at it in a mo.
Maybe i'll get an answer to my question....! lol

SleepyJess · 18/03/2006 19:33

TBB I know.. I hope its not see that way tho. I wanted to SAY what I was asking for and not be underhand as has been done in the past and has resulted, if I am not wrong, in the setting up of VERY similar and now-thriving sites. BBUK is not a rival at all..not similar at all.. it's just not big enough and never would be.

Thanks for the support :)

OP posts:
SleepyJess · 18/03/2006 19:35

Yes it was (re privacy) TBBT.. but I think it was about something specific.. and the side effect is people not being able to see what what they might get from the site if they registered. No good having privacy if nobody posts! :)

SJ, I do think this is a bit cheeky actually, if I was mn towers I wouldn't be overly thrilled with your post. I don't think they mind at all if people mention other sites, absolutely not but you are actively trying to recruit!

zippitippitoes · 18/03/2006 19:35

I don't like having to register first either..and old dates on the homepage just puts me off, I am interested in talking to people now not answering something written a couple of weeks ago or waiting that long for some interest, sorry

And I'm quite happy with mumsnet so too lazy to delve into another site, only so much i can cope with..Smile

SleepyJess · 18/03/2006 19:37

OK WWW.. well I was exepecting that. If the thread gets deleted I won't grumble.. it was jsut a last ditch attempt to save the site really

OP posts:
WideWebWitch · 18/03/2006 19:40

I think if you want busines advice about why the site isn't doing v well and what can you do to improve it then people will probably help (I would, I expect!) but actively recruiting mnetters is a bit, well, I don't know, unethical I guess, is my view.

Boopert · 18/03/2006 19:40

I'll have to say, not the easiest site to find your way round. And with MN its in now time, not a couple of days ago. Will occasionally pop in but don't think its my kinda thang.

WideWebWitch · 18/03/2006 19:40

Except we can't get on to give you constructive criticism without registering!

SleepyJess · 18/03/2006 19:42

Well it wouldn't be business advice we want as it's not commercial at all in fact runs at a loss so we can support various charities. (The site owner gets a tiny amount of dosh from a few ads but lots are charity adds anyway). I do appreciate the 'unethical-ness' of my post tho and apologise to MN in advance...

zippitippitoes · 18/03/2006 19:45

I think that is the reason ..

even if it is never intended to be commercial you have to think of it as a business or it won't ever go anywhere

that is how charities grow and become successful

you are pitching against commercial enterprise

also looking at the homepage it has to grip someone immediately and the charity aspect might be interesting but isn't obvious

and it has too much writing for a homepage

WideWebWitch · 18/03/2006 19:53

Fio, I think mn towers were hoping they might be able to make some kind of a living out of mumsnet, someday: it's not a charity. (sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong) But hey, I can't speak for them, obviously! Maybe they won't object at all.

SleepyJess · 18/03/2006 19:54

Well nobody is making a living out of BBUK really! :) It's jsut a place to chat and will never compete at all with MN

OP posts:
WideWebWitch · 18/03/2006 19:54

And the other site DOES need to do sometihng if they don';t want to close so they need to attract members therefore they do need business advice imo.
