Our neighbourhood has a "Buddhist Village", complete with health food store, alternative health centre, Buddhist temple, and a couple of vegetarian restaurants. Oh, and an ethical gifts shop.

Our street has a man who always sweeps outside with no shirt on, while singing loudly. Think Pavarotti, but only in appearance, not singing skills.

What's weird about your neighbourhood.

My street has a pier on it, from which a ferry runs every 15 minutes to take you across the loch. And it has a mountain behind it.

There is an old man a bit further up the road who sits in his bay window and waves at you when you go past. If the sun is shining on his window (therefore you can't see him) he waves with a little torch Grin. He gives my kids sweets and grapes Smile

NotQuiteCockney · 02/03/2006 10:18

What on earth is a Magdalene toastrack? (And is this one of those things where you spell it "Magdalene" but say "maudlin"?)

Back home, in Montreal, there often seemed to be loads of old people who sat in their windows all day and stared. No waving, though.

Two neighbours of mine sit out the front, stare, don't say anything, don't wave, don't acknowledge then put notes through your letterbox to cut your hedge! Don't mess with me elderly neighbours, I have lots of children to let loose on you!!!!!

charliegirl25 · 02/03/2006 12:56

we have the cathedral nearby where harry potter was filmed and also fred and rose west.

NotQuiteCockney · 02/03/2006 13:01

Oh god, we have the opposite problem. A neighbour's hedge is taking over the (communal) car park. It sticks out about 4 feet now. And all polite requests to trim it are greeted with outrage, as we are clearly Evil, and want to Kill the Birds.

Meanwhile, a few car parking spaces have become essentially unusable, unless the cars' owners want them all dinged up.

You can see the South Downs from my bedroom window (in the winter). We have a deaf Tesco delivery driver. Next door neighbour got done for cutting a branch off a tree (very badly) from a posh house garden which backs on to ours.
No waving pensioners or buddhists here though...

MrsBadger · 02/03/2006 13:56

super independent sewing/fabric/wool/craft shop that people drive from miles around to get to

(will gloss over the chavs and the army barracks)

bundle · 02/03/2006 14:00

we have the Arsenal, actually a lot less hassle than you'd think, and we sometimes take the girls for a stroll to see the police horses being fed at half time..there's also woolshop which also doubles up as Christian icons emporium, you can see the gherkin from the park where they've just refurbished the tennis courts, complete with baby-sized nets Smile...and there's a lovely new organic cafe next to our super library

nailpolish · 02/03/2006 14:07

I live in a commuter village and have only ever spoken to one of my immediate neighbours on the day I moved in 5 years ago! We do have 3 churches though!

mcmudda · 02/03/2006 14:13

Go for a five minute walk through our back garden and you'll come to an abandoned village which was left during the Highland Clearances - v spooky Grin

NotQuiteCockney · 02/03/2006 14:16

MrsBadger, where are you?

bundle, I am curious about your yarn/icons shop. How does it compare to Loop (you've been, right?)?

I really enjoyed the weird Reading department store I went to for wool (Jacksons Corner?), although 50% off lots of stuff may have been part of the enjoyment.

Ummm... a bloody great tower in the middle of town? Grin

In my home town we had the hill where they roll the cheese down and lots of pissheads run down after it and break various body parts without realising Grin - Charliegirl25 - same county Grin

We are in the village in Wiltshire where the 101st Airbourne of "Band of Brothers" fame were billeted in stables and the like in WWII. We get lots of wistful elderly Amercian Visitors throughout the year who come back to look up thier wartime sweethearts and have another drink in the pub on the village green. One of them even bought the ramshackle old barn he was billeted in in the war, last year it was taken apart brick by brick and shipped to the USA to be reassembled on his ranch.

Its bizarre as at odd times in the year you'll walk up tot the green and find a huge number of grown men all dressed up in uniform re-enacting drills and the like for the visiting veterans. Its really wierd.

MrsBadger · 02/03/2006 14:47

NQC, you know exactly where I am because you sent me your discarded prunes!

NotQuiteCockney · 02/03/2006 14:48

Oh, yes, how were those?

(I'm afraid my mental map of England consists of London, and then some warnings about dragons. So yes, I have your postal address somewhere, but I have no idea where you are!)

OP posts:
bundle · 02/03/2006 14:48

nqc, it's on blackstock rd it's called lenarow, they have a good selection of rowan and quite a lot of the cheaper, massive balls of yarns (lots of acrylics but some of those big bobbin things which must work out cheap, but they tend to be really fine, 3 or 4 ply) - and they have a good selection of ribbons/pom poms for when we're making gorgeous necklaces/cards at home...Grin
dd1 often chooses a little prayer card from the displays which are on castors..the proprietors wheel them around the shop so you can see the rest of the stock Smile

bundle · 02/03/2006 14:49

(loop is of course less chaotic, and a lot more Islington dahhhhhlink)

iota · 02/03/2006 14:49

I live in Milton Keynes ......I think I'll just leave it at that Grin
