What Makes Your Area Unique?

Our neighbourhood has a "Buddhist Village", complete with health food store, alternative health centre, Buddhist temple, and a couple of vegetarian restaurants. Oh, and an ethical gifts shop.

Our street has a man who always sweeps outside with no shirt on, while singing loudly. Think Pavarotti, but only in appearance, not singing skills.

What's weird about your neighbourhood.

yep
you sometimes get a sheet at the front of a pad of writing paper

NotQuiteCockney · 02/03/2006 21:16

Is the invention of blotting paper really the most interesting thing about where you live?

Oh, I should have added, there's a house near me (that a friend lives in) that has a Sylvia Pankhurst blue plaque on it.

Should I ask?

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 03/03/2006 12:27

The smell of Tim Henman?

NotQuiteCockney · 03/03/2006 12:34

What smell does Tim Henman have? Or do I want to know?

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 03/03/2006 12:47

Hmm. A sort of sweaty meekness, do you think?

NotQuiteCockney · 03/03/2006 13:00

I am ok. I think the problem is depression, not viral. Which is fine, expected even, given.

I went for a very long run this morning, just put on ipod and kept going. Very good. I will keep treating as for depression (good food, lots of exercise), and wait it out.

We have a statue in town which always, always, always has a traffic cone on its head. The council used to remove it only to find it had appeared again by the next day so now they just leave it!

In fact, this has become more of a tourist attraction than the statue itself.

Have a look

NotQuiteCockney · 03/03/2006 16:43

Um, heymammy, I can't see the statue from here ...

OP posts:
heymammy · 03/03/2006 16:43

In my garden I can see the mountain with snow today and only 5 miles away in the car I can go to the beach. The food and neighbours are lovely and I never need to lock the door.

PeachyClair · 03/03/2006 16:55

I want to come to your village NQC!!!!!! Sounds great!

We're a tiny town but we have a University. And we have the only Amphitheatre (Roamn original anyhow) in the UK I believe? SOmething like that anyway, certainly a most excellent Amphitheatre. Andas a result some Roman Baths and a museum. And loads of strange angel gift shop type places. But nowhere you can buy a non-rotten apple.

PeachyClair · 03/03/2006 16:56

mummypumpkin I lived in a place famed for it's amell until alst year, a nasty stink of sulphur. You have my sympathies (esp if it's same place).

NotQuiteCockney · 03/03/2006 16:59

The Buddhist Village is ok, PC, it's a bit strange. But it's nice to have a little area of that sort of stuff locally.

I quite like the smell of sulphur. Reminds me of my honeymoon ...

Apparently, according to the lady in the building society - our area has the highest count of paedophiles in the country. Shock

spacecadet · 03/03/2006 17:02

i live near an historic cathedral city where porterhouse blue was filmed.

there is still a bier house in the village, with the bier inside it, although it hasnt been used for a while.

NotQuiteCockney · 03/03/2006 17:03

VVV, I think you may, instead, have an unusually high number of mad building society ladies?
