Help needed ...to find a boy's name

lucy123 · 18/11/2003 14:42

I know we've covered this before, but I'm still stuck, so I thought I'd start a parallel thread to Ghosty's

names I kind of have in mind...

Lucas
Luis
Cameron

I'm kind of constrained by the fact that the name has to work in Spanish (although I don't mind if he has an English given name as long as I like the equivalent in Spanish). Cameron obviously is not Spanish, but apparently there is a famous Flamenco singer with that name.

Also I have a thing about family names (as ds will have dp's surname) so the name has to work well with Robert, David, or William as a middle name. Actually I would like Albert or Kenneth as a middle name but dp is against this.

Oh yes, Joseph is another possibility (Jose or Pepe in Spanish).

But I'm stuck!

Daniel, Joshua, Liam

polly28 · 18/11/2003 23:43

I like Laurence
Charles
George
Crawford

anais · 18/11/2003 23:52

No clue on the spanish, but if dd had been a boy she would probably have been Owen (owen james), maybe ewan or finlay

MUM2ELA · 19/11/2003 08:37

i like:

Ben
Jai (ended up calling DD this as middle name, after a horse, long story . .)
Jasper

Actuall,y theres not many boys names I like. ;(

Kazziegirl · 19/11/2003 08:47

I think all of these can be spanish; Andrew (Andres), Philip (Felipe), James (yago), Paul (Pablo), Marcus (Marcos), Alexander (alejandro). Hope you find something you like soon. xx

Jaybee · 19/11/2003 16:55

There is a boy in my ds' class whose Mum is Spanish and he is Nicolas - Spanish spelling and easy to pronounce in both countries - usually gets called Nico.

Jaybee · 19/11/2003 17:02

Also, thinking of my male colleagues in our Spanish office - names that could be used here too are Ramon, Sergio, Raul, Tito (he's gorgeous) Rafael, Victor, Ruben, Zacarias (Zak), Benjamin.

janh · 19/11/2003 17:04

Oh, I like Nicolas - and Nico.

(Wanted to call DS2 Nicholas but family wouldn't let me - I think Nicky is nice for a little boy, and Nick is great for a grown-up.)

Marina · 19/11/2003 20:40

Javier or Pablo maybe? But I like Nicolas or Tomas too. Robert Graves had a Tomas and I think it works very well in Spanish and juxtaposed with English names.

lucy123 · 19/11/2003 20:47

Does Javier really work in English though? I like it in Spanish. I think I know too many "nasty Nick" s for that to be a choice. Does sound nicer as Nico. And Zak is good. Must look that up...

can you tell I still haven't got much closer to a decision?

I teach a Tomas this year; kept wondering where the spelling came from.

janh · 19/11/2003 21:00

I'd forgotten Nasty Nick. I only know one grown-up Nick and he is not nasty (possibly a bit too touchy-feely though!)

whymummy · 19/11/2003 21:11

alfie rodrigo,rory,rodry
tom
sam
marcos
raul
daniel
roberto
enrique,kike,kiko
iker
javier,javi or xavier
max(it doesn't have to be maximiliano)

Sari · 19/11/2003 22:48

Has anyone mentioned Matias/Mateo/Matthew or Gabriel or Alejandro/Alex or Oscar or Julian?

I know people called Julio Cesar and Miguel Angel ... hmm. Also Robert Downey Jr has a son called Indio - it sounds good in English but would perhaps take some living down in Spain.

Dinosaur, I take your point about Franco not being such a good choice in Spain. The ones I know are South American so it's not such a problem.

i like rory but keep thinking of the rory the mascot from haven holidays and it puts me off iykwim

Rhubarb · 20/11/2003 16:00

Stig

lucy123 · 20/11/2003 19:20

Rhubarb - I think dp would love Stig. His suggestion was "Darth".

I love Max, but it sounds like a porn-star name with dp's surname. And it would have to be Maximiliano or Maximillian - I have a thing about giving babies the full name (for telling off purposes, and just in case ds turns out to be a high court judge or somthething).

Grommit · 20/11/2003 19:23

Lucy123 - I started a similar thread a month or so ago - my baby is due next week and I still don't have a name!! Agghh - girls names are so much easier. Have you decided yet?

SenoraPostrophe · 29/12/2003 09:47

OK everyone - still undecided (and have even changed my own name now. perhaps that says something)

Current shortlist is:

Lucas
Tomas
Xavier
Adan (pronounced aDAN - the Spanish form of Adam)
Alden - like this mostly because it means "old friend"
Rafael (though suspect dp will hate this)

What do you think? Other ideas welcome!

SenoraPostrophe · 29/12/2003 09:49

Or does Dax sound silly?

WideWebWitch · 29/12/2003 09:59

Dax sounds like Jatsia (sp?) Dax (dacks?) from Star Trek! I like Lucas, it's quite unusual isn't it?
