Did you read the India Knight article in the Sunday Times (not my paper - was reading parents in law's paper!)

Apparently it is totally indefensible to place your child in a Day Nursery (or with a nanny / childminder) when they are a baby. The magic age that it becomes acceptable according to the law unto Ms Knight, is 12 months old. Any mum farming out their children before that age is simply unfit to be a mother and shouldn't have procreated.

Also, since according to Ms Knight day care costs £60 per day (really ? - mine doesn't), any woman who can afford those sort of child care costs can afford to take a year's unpaid leave from work.

I spent about 2 minutes being upset and annoyed after reading this article, and then tried to dismiss it from my mind (not altogether successfully). I suppose there is an anti mum article (either knocking SAHMs or working mums) every week at the moment, because the media have got it into their heads that parenting is a very vogue and fashionable subject. Its getting mighty boring now though...

charly · 03/11/2003 10:33

CountessDracula · 03/11/2003 10:34

Hmmm...what I can't get over is that she writes beauty tips...BEAUTY TIPS....have you ever seen her? I think she has a serious problem with reality. The idea that I'd take beauty tips from a pig in a dress or that a woman who is still smoking through her pregnancy is in a position to dictate to anyone else how to be a parent...well...what can I say?

(yes, I do know the above is not very PC, but honestly, if you look like a Moose, don't tell me what lipstick to wear. Glass houses and all that.)

handlemecarefully · 03/11/2003 10:52

Aloha,

It might not be very pc as you say, but I think India Knight is fair game! Thanks for the laugh

Aloha- I think she deserves any nonPC criticism going. Whole premise of the article was that it was the mothers fault the baby died because she knew it had an allergy and still put it in daycare. As if the poor woman doesnt feel bad enough- Hope she didnt see it.

India Knight is probably the most irritating person I've read! AND she thinks she's utterly gorgeous. I read her latest novel (freebie with magazine) and despised myself for even turning the pages.

Of course, if someone paid me to write drivel (or rather paid me MORE to write drivel) I would leap at the chance...

Eve · 03/11/2003 11:12

Glad someone else had these thoughts as well. I read it and thought she has her opinion, is entitled to is as the rest of us, but we don't have the luxury of printing it in a national newspaper and please be a bit more objective.

70% of mums work does she really think that all 70% of those want to go to work.

....also she should remember that as she has just published a book telling us all how to shop (..and its in Harvey Nics, not New Look!!!!), where does she think we will get the money from if we don't work.

Double standards for Ms Knight I think

lazyeye · 03/11/2003 11:16

Yeah its okay to stay at home for the 1st 12mnths if you have a nice job which allows you to work from home. God, I am truly sick of these stupid women. Really and truly they don't live in the real world, they reallly don't count. Sorry.

suedonim · 03/11/2003 11:21

Aloha! I saw a photo of her last week, the first time ever, and was truly shocked at how gruesome she is. I do think you are being a bit unfair to Miss Piggy of Muppets fame to call IK a pig, though.

coppertop · 03/11/2003 11:22

Is this the India Knight fan-club?

CountessDracula · 03/11/2003 11:24

Let's send her a link to this thread and then she can see what we think of her!!

FairyMum · 03/11/2003 11:28

India Knight is just so bad for my blood pressure. In fact, the whole of the ST is these days.....

motherinferior · 03/11/2003 11:32

I work from home - so my babies are elsewhere!

Not knocking mums with jobs which allow them to stay at home motherinferior - wish I could do it!!! Just so angry at this very silly woman who needs to wake up & try life out here.....

motherinferior · 03/11/2003 11:56

No offence taken - just explaining that I too put my children into childcare!

The thing that really really annoyed me with IK is when she wrote blithely about splitting up with her husband and, whoops, finding new devoted partner, life goes on enhanced and gorgeous, lalalalala. Yeah, right. What happened to real emotion and pain?

Please note that her normal publicity pic is VERY carefully angled.

aloha · 03/11/2003 12:04

And do you know she actually wrote that she sometimes sees women in the street without makeup and says she wants to give them her lipstick, 'because their need is so much greater than mine..." eh?
Suedonim, I actually really like pigs, so I accept your criticism of my comparison

Tinker · 03/11/2003 12:13

Great idea about sending this to her o) I too feel tainted after reading one of her books - charity shop so at least she didn't benefit. She often appears on Question Time as well - why?
