Spent yesterday driving around SW London and neighbouring Surrey areas as the start of our big move and was very taken with Weybridge. If anyone can give me any informations about the area (good and bad) particularly local schools, best parts to live in, good for families etc etc.

What is addlestone like? nice?

wilbur · 04/01/2006 17:25

What about something like this ?

uwila · 04/01/2006 17:32

What about Epsom? The train is pretty good, as you can get it to Waterloo, Victoria, or London Bridge... not sure where your DH needs to go. Schools aren't pretty good.

Or a bit north of Weybridge is Hampton, which puts you just into the Richmond borough.

LIZS · 04/01/2006 17:39

Chertsey ,Esher, Egham or Englefield Green ? Have driven through Addlestone and wasn't that keen tbh.

uwila · 04/01/2006 17:41

Oh sorry, meant to say schools are pretty good in Epsom. Public and private options.

notasheep · 04/01/2006 19:27

Addlestone is the pits-sorry just being honest but
spitting distance from M25

marbeth · 04/01/2006 19:32

Got a friend lives in westend in surrey.Excellant state primary and gordons secondary school in the catchment area.

Salsa · 04/01/2006 19:34

I grew up in Shepperton which is 5-10 mins from weybridge and it is a lovely village. I went to college in Weybridge and I liked it. Shepperton is expensive too but not as much as Weybridge.

chicagomum · 04/01/2006 19:37

Right

The absolute low down is -

(1) 1 hour from NW London (max)
(2) 1 hour from winchester area (max)
(3) Good schools locally ( def. 2ndry but also (hopefully) primary).
(4)Around 1 hours commute into the city, to include train to waterloo plus tube (and obviously walk/drive/bus to train station).
(5) A nice area to live in and be a family with outdoor activies, (golf and horse riding for instance), good community spirit and a chance for me to meet other mums and establish a good lifestyle for us all.

notasheep · 04/01/2006 19:38

Poor chicago mum you really are getting bombarded with places to live!
Go where the feeling takes you, what will be will be!

I NEVER thought i would live in rural isolation and it happened

Salsa · 04/01/2006 19:40

Go with Shepperton it is lovely.
Are you looking at state schools?
St Nicholas is the best C of E school in the area followed by Thamesmead Secondary School.

It takes 40 mins Shepperton - Waterloo.
I live abroad and I am doing everything in my power to move back.

notasheep · 04/01/2006 19:42

GEE i have just gone through your 1 to 5-a big challenge!

notasheep · 04/01/2006 19:43

Surely Weybridge buzzes a bit more than Shepperton

Salsa · 04/01/2006 19:55

Shepperton is a little more friendly. They have opened an indoor play area (soft play), they have coffee mornings etc. You get to know a lot of people around but it is not so small that it feels claustraphobic.

Weybridge is nice but over priced and full of boutiques and... you know...

notasheep · 04/01/2006 20:01

Yeh- that you know,if i post i will sound so rude

Here goes!!! Weybridge is full of rather an awful lot of people with too much money, too much time, too large cars who cannot seem to get the idea that to be successful, wealthy and happy you do not need to parade everything.

But they have a Waitrose and Cliff Richard lives there along with blah blah blah.........

Salsa · 04/01/2006 20:06

He He Notasheep. I like Weybridge, as I said I went to Brooklands College there.

Most of my family lives in Sheppeton, St Georges Hill and Wentworth so I know what you mean. I find Shepperton to be a bit more normal and down to earth (the people).

uwila · 04/01/2006 20:44

Sounds like you need somewhere accessible to the M3 (for Winchester -- assuming travel to Winchester will generally be by car) but not too far from London (somewhere with good train commute), and of course good schools. Shepperton is not a bad suggestion. I live in Sunbury which is quite close so I know the area a bit. Epsom is also not too bad because the train connections are prettty good (about 30 min to London) or possibly Woking as the trains are frequent and you can get express trains into London at peak times. I still think you might like to consider somewhere in Richmond borough for the schools, but accessible to the M3 for travel to Winchester. Possibly Hampton??

Are you through having kids? If not, you might like to consider the hospital area you are in as well. And this brings me to the one bad thing about Shepperton. It is in the catchment for St. Peters in Chertsey and you do NOT want to have a baby there.

notasheep · 04/01/2006 20:54

Hold on a minute I had dd at St Peters Hospital!!

A very positive experience,no c section,no epidural,no laying on back so doctors have control of me,no infection and she was a millenium babe

notasheep · 04/01/2006 20:55

This mumsnet is a small world-you never know who is watching you!

uwila · 04/01/2006 21:11

Glad you had a good experience... but not everyone does. Crap reputation. I bailed out and went to Queen Charlotte... wasn't taking any chances.

Sorry if I offended you.

notasheep · 04/01/2006 21:22

Not at all-I couldnt live in London-that might offend people!

Salsa · 04/01/2006 21:49

I had dd and ds at st peters with no problems at all

notasheep · 04/01/2006 21:51

But what a joke paying for the car park when you are in labour and NEED to get to that labour ward, not be fiddling around for change!

Salsa · 04/01/2006 22:04

I know quite unbelievable. That has now become the staff carpark I believe and you have to park even further aware.

I say I can't complain but I did have to wait a very very very long time for an epidural with ds. A 47 Hour labour.

No other complaints though

Salsa · 04/01/2006 22:06

Also both of my little sisters were premature. One was 6 weeks and one was 12 weeks and they had excellent care at St Peters.
