Just cos I love Scotland.

The banter
Irn bru
Men who look like they grew out of the ground
How everyone sees going out and having a good time as some kind of fundamental human right
Edinburgh fringe festival
The barrowlands ballroom
Whisky

just because

JennyPiccolo · 12/08/2011 21:22

ahaha! slinging a deafie to famous folk. That's so true, we are a nation of aloof bastards when it comes to famous people.

handsomeharry I lived in Dunfermline when I was wee, my Gran and quite a few relatives are still there. I love the Glen, and Dunfermline, the abbey and Andrew Carnegie.

I really like taking my bairns there too, it is my favourite park in Scotland, even though the Botanics in Edinburgh is fab.

Annunziata · 12/08/2011 21:23

The sky, love the sky.
Macaroon and steak pie.
Goin to the dancin' and gettin' a clink! Is that a Glasgow one?

I'm getting all sentimental now!

Craig Ferguson

amazing to see the Glen mentioned here! will be going there tomorrow for the Bruce Festival with DC3. We used to go there on school trips when I was at school 40 years ago, and we go there every Easter to roll eggs.
Do have to bring a touch of realism to the wildlife and bliss posts though - there are other areas in Scotland apart from the stereotypical Brigadoon Highlands - otters, sea eagles and deer etc are really not that common on housing estates in Central Fife and places like Dundee, Glasgow and Edinburgh inner city areas! An urban fox and a gang of puking Buckfast boys maybe. it aint all tartan and shorbread and tourist nostalgia.

The shop outside the Barras that says 'Chiropody, Shellfish, Books'.

I met Miss Piggy in the Glen, I was convinced she was the real Miss Piggy, and was slightly terrified. I went to Commercial Primary School (Commercial park had a helter skelter and big barrels like hamster wheels).

JennyPiccolo · 12/08/2011 21:26

ive never heard 'gettin a clink', is it just the same as a winch or a lumber?

handsomeharry · 12/08/2011 21:27

I still haven't taken DS to the Glen but I'm sure he would love it.

Dunfermline was a great place to grow up. I grew up there in the 70s when the only shop was the co-op. The excitement when Littlewoods came to town!!

Annunziata · 12/08/2011 21:29

Aye :) Apparently after the sound the milk bottles made when your young man was saying goodnight to you in the close?! I'm sure its "clink," it definitely began with "cl."

Fire festivals like the one in Stonehaven where big kilted men whirl burning balls of tar all over the town.

Colin Campbell! "Swingin' Radio Auchnagatt"

fledtoscotland · 12/08/2011 21:29

the people - friendly and straight-talking
whisky
stunning scenery - can see Ben Lomond from my landing window
tattie scones in a roll with black pudding
museums are for the most-part free to get in
sense of identity
sense of fairness - glasgow airport bombers weren't planning on the general public apprehending them!
Colin & Justin

TapselteerieO · 12/08/2011 21:29

My Mum worked in Littlewoods, the glamour Grin, but I remember the co-op too.

JennyPiccolo · 12/08/2011 21:31

i went to the fire festival a couple of years ago, was awesome. On the beach in the snow with fireworks, drinking champagne! What a way to bring in the new year.

MynameisnotEarl · 12/08/2011 21:31

Earwigs = forkietailies here
Stovies, white puddings (oh, yum!), tablet, macaroon bars, irn bru, butteries (rowies), lorne sausage, deep fried pizza.
Pipes and drums .
Dundee worthies.

God, I'm sooo homesick Sad

dementedma · 12/08/2011 21:32

i remember the hamster wheel barrels! lol
went to St Columba's High School in dunfermline in the 70's and 80's. Went off to a few other places after that but here I am living not a million miles away from Dunfermline again!
if i could afford to move though, I'd live in Perth day to day and have a wonderful house somewhere up the East Neuk where I could see the sea.

waitofevidence · 12/08/2011 21:33

The North beach on Iona
The soft, everchanging light
The pine martens, red squirrels, basking sharks and eagles
Hearing the accents on arriving at Glasgow after travelling
The warmth and humour and gallusness
The walk along Conic hill, Loch Lomond in autumn
I could go on........
