Why Do I react this way when I talk to people who have more money than sense????

SackAche · 25/11/2005 20:01

There are 2 people in my life that clearly have no money worries whatsoever. Evidence being:

1)They NEVER know how much anything costs. It just doesn't matter to them.

2)They won't even consider buying clothes or anything thats in a Sale...as it must be 'last season'.

3)They get themselves into serious financial trouble..... but their parents bail them out..... therefore they don't even see the situations as serious!

Now.... I've found myself getting really short with them. One is a very close friend, the other is a work colleague.

I actually get a nervous twitch if one of them says the words "I'm skint". They are not that wealthy BTW.... they just don't care about money as they always know someone will sort out their problems.

I don't think I'm jealous.... but then why else would I be reacting this way.

I;ll give you an example:

Coleague (lets call her Jan): I really need a new Computer Desk. Where else can I look online apart from John Lewis???

Me: Eh... what about Argos or Ikea?

Jan blanks me and turns to someone else: Have you got any ideas?

Me: Why don't you want to look at Ikea or Argos.

Jan smiles and rolls her eyes: Oh I know, I'll try Habitat and Next!

Me: Okay....if you don't like my 1st suggestions what about MFI?

Jan smiles patronisingly: I just don't like furniture out of those kind of places.

Me (nervous twitch in full throttle): Why not? Are you rrrreally that much of a snob!!?

Jan (shocked look): I'm not a snob!! I just like the finer things in life.

Me: HA! You're a snob.

Then I carry on with work and she goes onto purchase a £15 million Gold plated Computer Desk with built in NASA technology.... I presume.

Am I bitter????? Or does anyone else share my irritation at people who are such SNOBS about things!!!!?

PHEW.... that feels better!

My SIL is as bad, "I only like NICE things, of course they cost more don't they?" Grrr...
By the way did you know that IKEA owns Habitat! I think a lot of Habitat stock is essentially IKEA stuff!

KBearthePolarBear · 25/11/2005 20:05

I'm right there with ya!

I cringe if my boss (let's call her Boden queen [queen]) asks where I bought something in case it's Matalan! ha ha

zippimistletoes · 25/11/2005 20:07

My desk is from Homebase

charlietherednosedpussy · 25/11/2005 20:07

Being very skint at the moment, having had 0 income for the past 5 weeks since dps been made redundant and having not yet been paid for the work he has done I admit to tuning out of conversations that involve other people spending money as I dont have a bean.
I laugh at the sort of people you are talking about....
I live in an snotty area where teenagers are given £200 quid allowances and are always wearing Brand New clothes.
And theres me ...bag lady...I dont think im but theres a certain rattle inside at Oh isnt that cheap 15.99 for a candle...

foxinsocks · 25/11/2005 20:10

It just makes me laugh really - our neighbour (who is 50) is still getting bailed out by her mum and dad. I think once it starts, it never stops.

foxinsocks · 25/11/2005 20:11

It also means they never really learn the value of money because they never have to worry about it. They don't live in the real world!

SackAche · 25/11/2005 20:13

Jan earns £200 a day...... we're all Contractors so we don't get any holiday pay or sick pay etc. The other day she asked for a rate rise..... which was refused. She went MENTAL and raged about it all day!

On the train on the way home she said:
"I mean I only asked for an extra £40 a day which on the grand scale of things isn't that much!"

I burst out laughing! I said "Are you seriously miffed at not getting a 20% payrise????"

Jan "YES! I mean we're all Contractors.... so we don't get any perks"

Me: "But you can't be expected to earn £40 a day more than everyone else doing your job!"

Jan: Yes I can! I wanted a payrise!!

I'm surprised she didn't stamp her feet and phone her Dad to sort them out!!!

OP posts:
SackAche · 25/11/2005 20:17

I think it just strikes me as completely ungrateful! I don't earn £200 a day, but I really happy with my salary since starting that job 4 months ago. She's only been there 9 months but is already moaning about what she earns. She clearly doesn't need a payrise. And they told her they would look at it again in 3 months..... but her ego was bruised.

OP posts:
Anniek · 25/11/2005 20:21

Side issue, someone once asked for a payrise, and when asked why they felt they deserved it, their answer was "my wife is pregnant again"....

I go crazy at people who are adults and expect their parents to bail them out, that to me is so pathetic.

foxinsocks · 25/11/2005 20:23

sounds like she's not used to getting her own way. I find adults like that infuriating. I'm guessing she doesn't have kids yet.

SackAche · 25/11/2005 20:28

Foxinsocks - Good GOD no children... no husband. She's only 29 too. She doesn't want children and if I complain at work that ds/dd/ woke us up early one morning, she always pipes up with "Oh my god thats why I could never have kids.... I like my sleep too much!"

Hmm.... d'you think she might be shallow?

I too think its pathetic! My friends Dad paid for her wedding circa £20k... 7 months later she decided she had never really loved him anyway and sent him packing. Daddy took over her H's half of the rent until she could find somewhere else..... THEN dealt with the Divorce through his Solicitor! All she had to do was turn up to sign the papers. I had to bite my tongue SOOOOOOOOOO many times whilst that was going on!

Oh..and then he gave her organised a mortgage for her and put £16k towards it so she could live in the city near her pals.

Moi? Bitter??

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 25/11/2005 20:32

poor diddums, she will have a hard time finding a man who lives up to daddy's expectations and one who can fund her lifestyle.

I don't have a problem with parents who give their children money (lots of people do this nowadays to avoid inheritance tax - spend it while they are alive!) but it's the expectation that they will be bailed out of every situation that is so appalling!

She probably talks about you at home - that deluded woman with children who doesn't get paid as much as me

edam · 25/11/2005 20:34

I'd be too. I can cope with other people being richer than me but NOT if they start moaning about how skint they are. Grrrrrrrr.

SackAche · 25/11/2005 20:36

Foxinsox - The 2nd example I posted about is someone different..... my BEST FRIEND in fact! I was a bridesmaid at the afore mentioned tasteful, but meaningless wedding. Am I a bitch?

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 25/11/2005 20:39

ooh 2 people (and 1 is a friend!) you know are like this? I think you are truly blessed. Yes you are a bitch but it's so much more fun being judgemental than it is loving everyone no matter what their faults are

SackAche · 25/11/2005 20:39

Edam - Totally!! The girl I work with, Jan, has bought 2 pairs of winter boots last week at £90 a pair..... then today she said. "OMG, I soooo need another pair of boots..... these look shabby and I've only worn them twice". Eh?

Then she complained that she was skint. I felt like saying "you need look no further than you're snobbery to find out why you're skint, sweetheart!"...... then again she can't skint coz she then went and bought a new 3 leather piece suite online (at work).

edam · 25/11/2005 20:40

One of my schoolfriends married a seriously wealthy man (and comes from a well-off family in the first place). I heard about the flash wedding from mutual friends, people arriving by helicopter blah blah blah (soooo vulgar, darling). Anyway, saw her at another wedding a few months later, first time since school, and was really, really cheered up by the fact that she was wearing THE most hideous dress. Possibly designer hideous but still 'oh my God I can't believe you left the house in that' stylie. Ha! She may have pots of money but absolutely no taste. [smug emoticon]

Janh · 25/11/2005 20:40

I wish you hadn't called her Jan

DS1 (17) has been whingeing a bit about all his friends (many and varied) whose parents have bought them cars and will sub them through uni. Also we have friends who have arranged jobs for their kids through contacts and now boast about how well they're doing in them. Unless their parents pay for the rest of their lives, they are going to come unstuck at some point, surely? (Please God)

expatinscotland · 25/11/2005 20:41

I don't get it. But that's b/c in America, it's seen as clever and a steal when you get a bargain. People get even more jealous that you weren't played for a sucker and ripped off. It's sort of like, 'What a mug! You've been had.'

People go on about that here, though, and I just think they're suckers, b/c you can get quality stuff here w/o being ripped off.

I HATE getting ripped off. Makes me feel a mug.

SackAche · 25/11/2005 20:41

oops 3 piece leather suite!

Foxinsox - yes my bestest friend in the whole wide world. She's not as deluded as the girl I work with though. My friend is a School Teacher so isn't on a massive salary.... but then why would she need to be when she's got parents like that!

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 25/11/2005 20:43

As for the parents bailing her out, well, that's their lookout, I guess.

I don't begrudge people like that b/c I stand to inherit nicely upon my own father's death - I hope he lives to his 90s like his parents, but I know he's provided well for us.

SackAche · 25/11/2005 20:44

Sorry Jan! Nothing inteneded... honest!

Expat - Thats just it..... I love a bargain! Even if (BIG IF) I could afford to spend £300 on a coat..... I would be sooooooo smug if I managed to get the same one.... or one similar for much less.

In fact.... I'm so stingy that the coat I want from Next for my Christmas I'm not buying it til Boxing Day.

OP posts:
SackAche · 25/11/2005 20:46

Expat - But thats different! You know how to stand on yor own 2 feet. The 2 people in question just don't.

Janh - PMSL at the fact you're hoping to god they fall in their arse one day..... know the feeling.
