Why Do I react this way when I talk to people who have more money than sense????

SackAche · 25/11/2005 20:01

There are 2 people in my life that clearly have no money worries whatsoever. Evidence being:

1)They NEVER know how much anything costs. It just doesn't matter to them.

2)They won't even consider buying clothes or anything thats in a Sale...as it must be 'last season'.

3)They get themselves into serious financial trouble..... but their parents bail them out..... therefore they don't even see the situations as serious!

Now.... I've found myself getting really short with them. One is a very close friend, the other is a work colleague.

I actually get a nervous twitch if one of them says the words "I'm skint". They are not that wealthy BTW.... they just don't care about money as they always know someone will sort out their problems.

I don't think I'm jealous.... but then why else would I be reacting this way.

I;ll give you an example:

Coleague (lets call her Jan): I really need a new Computer Desk. Where else can I look online apart from John Lewis???

Me: Eh... what about Argos or Ikea?

Jan blanks me and turns to someone else: Have you got any ideas?

Me: Why don't you want to look at Ikea or Argos.

Jan smiles and rolls her eyes: Oh I know, I'll try Habitat and Next!

Me: Okay....if you don't like my 1st suggestions what about MFI?

Jan smiles patronisingly: I just don't like furniture out of those kind of places.

Me (nervous twitch in full throttle): Why not? Are you rrrreally that much of a snob!!?

Jan (shocked look): I'm not a snob!! I just like the finer things in life.

Me: HA! You're a snob.

Then I carry on with work and she goes onto purchase a £15 million Gold plated Computer Desk with built in NASA technology.... I presume.

Am I bitter????? Or does anyone else share my irritation at people who are such SNOBS about things!!!!?

PHEW.... that feels better!

Only the stupid generally pay more for an item than they need to. There are occaisions when paying slightly more is necessary (not many though) on a similar note had a friend who told another friend that she could never shop or admit to shopping in asda after friend #1 told her she was going to do a shop in asda. On another note I dont know how much a bottle of milk costs or a loaf of bread, or a gallon of petrol. Not because I am a snob but more because I know how much my weekly shops costs and the items dont change much. I dont shop in lidl - went in once and hated it - didnt like the lack of variety in the ranges. I do buy from john lewis but only at competitive prices - for items like hoovers etc where I expect extended warranties and customer services. - I do how ever love a bargain - very rarely pay full price for anything, but things in the sale keep them for nearly 28 days and when they have been reduced again take them back and buy them back immediately at the new even lower price. Sometime have to enlist the help of friends but a bargain is a bargin. My final point is any one who thinks ikea is cheap must have will power like iron - i shop there frequently - typical scenario - see some thing for £12 and think that is a bargain - by then time I have reached the till the amount has quadrupled ( at least)

OMG, have you SEEN Lidl's booze selection?! It's incredible. Someone here mentioned a delicious wine they sell, but I didn't jot down the name and my memory's like a sieve. But there's one just up the road and right now it is CHOCK full of the most gorgeous Xmas stuff - European biscuits and sweets, lovely cheeses, etc. I made some beautiful hampers w/the help of Lidl.

If we had a Primark here, I'd be there like a shot. My mom and I found one in Aberdeen and we were in there for hours.

Nearly all our furniture is 'second-hand', except for the mattresses, TV, etc. My parents are veteran antiquers, they like to go just for fun and spend a lot of time learning about old furniture, dishes, and all sorts of fun, eccletic stuff. Estate sales, auctions, boot sales, etc. A real blast if you ask me!

When I lived in Denver I used to meet a group of friends every other Sat. morning for a mimosa (champers+OJ) brekkie before setting off to go antiquing.

It's a great way to find unusual gifts, too.

Quality is quality, no matter what the price.

expat, is the wine prosecco (sp?) - fizzyish white in blue bottle with string round neck?

Their reds are good too but in general you can get better quality on special offer in Sainsbos or Tesco (eg atm Sainsbos have Hardy's Cabernet Merlot - ostrich label - lovely wine, for £3.99 instead of £5.49. Lidl's prices are stable but not as good value as supermarket specials.)

expatinscotland · 25/11/2005 22:34

I cannot for the life of me remember the name of that wine, Jan, or who mentioned it. Whoever it was, her husband is a wine merchant or importer or somehow connected to the industry.

SackAche · 25/11/2005 22:48

Can I just add...... I just received a text from "Jan" to say she's on her 3rd bottle of Champagne tonight! Her and her Ex-boyf are having a night in talking about things!!!!!

Champagne for that????????

expatinscotland · 25/11/2005 22:54

What a waste of champers! It's meant to be savoured, not guzzled like Buckfast.

Gives you a wicked hangover, too.

gingerbear · 25/11/2005 22:58

I am now cringing at mentioning Jo Malone tonight.

SackAche · 25/11/2005 22:58

Expat - She'll probably go for a Shiatsu massage to get over her hangover though.

SackAche · 25/11/2005 22:58

WHo's Jo Malone????

Aldi Belgian lager is dirt cheap and is brewed by stella artois.

gingerbear · 25/11/2005 23:00

Drop dead gorgeous perfume maker - has a v v v vexpensive website, and I want some for Christmas.

gingerbear · 25/11/2005 23:00

Sacky, I wish you were going to london tomorrow.

SackAche · 25/11/2005 23:03

Is it tomorrow!?
I wish I was going too.

You Englander folk-type-people will just have to do a massive pilgrimage up here for a meet-up!

You can buy those essential oils for MUCH cheaper online than in Jo Malone, although yes her goods are superb.

Donna Karan just brought out a 'set' of mix and match oils that she's selling in the US for $185USD.

I just bought all four of those oils from my regular supplier for about £20.

gingerbear · 25/11/2005 23:05

A Scottish meet-up that all the globe is invited to type thing. Edinburgh or Glasgow, whaddya reckon?

gingerbear · 25/11/2005 23:06

Expat, I know, but it is just the blends she puts together are amazing.

expatinscotland · 25/11/2005 23:07

Practice makes perfect, ginger!

I have been using an old soapstone bowl I bought at a charity shop for 99cents for about 6 years now to get my blends just so . . .

Oooo, it is FUN stuff!

Tanzie · 25/11/2005 23:11

Gingerbear, ring Jo Malone mail order and ask them to send you some samples. I got a few small bottles posted to me last week (and some just sprayed on bits of cardboard, admittedly) and have been wafting round in Pomegranate Noir ever since.

Cheap and posh?

gingerbear · 25/11/2005 23:16

Tanzie, what a good idea! Will have to do the same. I have Lime Basil and mandarin, but fancy a change.

Tanzie · 25/11/2005 23:19

I also have L, B & M, and also the Nectarine Blossom and Honey. Not sure if I like the Pom Noir - bit blokey for me. French Lime Blossom is gopping. Liked the Verbenas de Provence and Orange Bloss tho.

2 arrived on little bits of cardboard stuffed into envelope - couldn't smell a thing.

gingerbear · 25/11/2005 23:21

I think we like the same type of fragrances Tanzie, Necarine Bossom and Honey sounds lush.

gingerbear · 25/11/2005 23:21

Sorry, Sacky for the hijack.

Tortington · 26/11/2005 00:28

i feel almost obliged to remind them how the other half live. i get this at work sometimes. i even pissed myself when a certain cold hearted person got preggers.
