Why Do I react this way when I talk to people who have more money than sense????

SackAche · 25/11/2005 20:01

There are 2 people in my life that clearly have no money worries whatsoever. Evidence being:

1)They NEVER know how much anything costs. It just doesn't matter to them.

2)They won't even consider buying clothes or anything thats in a Sale...as it must be 'last season'.

3)They get themselves into serious financial trouble..... but their parents bail them out..... therefore they don't even see the situations as serious!

Now.... I've found myself getting really short with them. One is a very close friend, the other is a work colleague.

I actually get a nervous twitch if one of them says the words "I'm skint". They are not that wealthy BTW.... they just don't care about money as they always know someone will sort out their problems.

I don't think I'm jealous.... but then why else would I be reacting this way.

I;ll give you an example:

Coleague (lets call her Jan): I really need a new Computer Desk. Where else can I look online apart from John Lewis???

Me: Eh... what about Argos or Ikea?

Jan blanks me and turns to someone else: Have you got any ideas?

Me: Why don't you want to look at Ikea or Argos.

Jan smiles and rolls her eyes: Oh I know, I'll try Habitat and Next!

Me: Okay....if you don't like my 1st suggestions what about MFI?

Jan smiles patronisingly: I just don't like furniture out of those kind of places.

Me (nervous twitch in full throttle): Why not? Are you rrrreally that much of a snob!!?

Jan (shocked look): I'm not a snob!! I just like the finer things in life.

Me: HA! You're a snob.

Then I carry on with work and she goes onto purchase a £15 million Gold plated Computer Desk with built in NASA technology.... I presume.

Am I bitter????? Or does anyone else share my irritation at people who are such SNOBS about things!!!!?

PHEW.... that feels better!

There you go, then! Work smarter, not harder!

'Smart like a fox' as we say in the States.

We have lots of bargain clothes shops, and even the rich will boast about scoring a deal. Other people admire that sort of saavy.

'Oh, you like this? Guess what? It's from TARGET! (an awesome discount shop).'

'No way!' and the person darts over there on their lunch to see if there are any more left.

Even better if it's got for a steal on EBay, a consignment or vintage shop, etc. b/c then it's unique AND cheap and an item to be envied.

SackAche · 25/11/2005 20:53

lol Expat. I remember her (Jan) asking where I got my boots from. I said Ravel, which is the kind of place she shops.... in fact I would never have been in there if I hadn't been with her one lunchtime.

Anyway... they had a sale on, but as usual she would look at the Sale stuff.

I went in the next week and bought a pair of boots with 20% off.
Got back to work and she saw them and went WOW I really like these!!! I told her how much they cost and she turned her nose up!!!!!!!!!!!

This gal sounds really silly and immature for 29, tbh. I mean, who CARES where someone got something and what they paid for it if you like it?

Janh · 25/11/2005 20:58

expat, Matalan (eg) sell a lot of really good stuff for peanuts but many people turn up their noses - Matalan? eurgh!

DDs and I love Matalan but it does make me wonder if we would still shop there if we won the lottery...

SackAche · 25/11/2005 20:59

Oh she is very immature.

I am getting more and more intolerant in my old age though. I think its because before I got the job... I was parttime... paying off loads of dabt accrued during Mat Leave with dd.... therefore I was seriously skint and living off the credit card. I put it down to jealousy and thought that I was being pathetic and sad and bitter.

But now I'm better off (and by that I mean managing to pay off all those debts finally) I realise that its not jealousy at all! Its sheer disgust at the fact that people like this (usually women might I add) have absolutely NO IDEA how to stand on their own 2 feet..... and have absolutely NO respect for those of us who do.

She sounds like a right banana, Sackache.

IntergalacticTheRedNosedWalrus · 25/11/2005 21:15

Yes, I rect in the smae way!

I know a lady who has a baby the same age as DS. (She is the one who has a box containing Tetley tea bags with "builder's tea" on the side.) She regularly comes out with comments such as "I am going to stop every one buying my DS plastic toys this christmas, as they look so cheap. Wodden toys only, I think"

I wanted to ram DS's cheap and plastic, but well-loved, jumping spider down her sanctimonious throat. The snob.

She looks down on me becuse I shop at Asda and don't own a wooden salad bowl. Dhje also gets her furniture from an independent shop in the centre of town. She wouldn't even stoop as low as John Lewis.

Jealous? Moi?

expatinscotland · 25/11/2005 21:15

Oh, well, I must be the biggest faux pas going, b/c I LOVE Matalan. I think it's fab. I buy lots of stuff there and when people compliment me and ask me where I got it, I'm proud to say I got a deal and not ripped off.

I'd still shop there if I won Lotto. Then give the difference between the price for it there and some poncey shop to charity. In fact, I'd set up an account so that it would automatically do that for me.

My dad came from nothing and did very well for himself and us but it didn't change him a bit - he still loves a steal and in his retirement is the king of the auction and estate sale.

expatinscotland · 25/11/2005 21:17

That's silly! And how ungrateful! If you really don't like the gift, sell it on Ebay and give the money to charity or donate it to charity. At least it goes to someone who will cherish it.

Oh it's not new, well it's new to me!

SackAche · 25/11/2005 21:17

lol Walrus! Don't you just want to ram a Matalan catalogue down their feckin throats.

Oh and afore mentioned Jan is not from a wealthy family originally. Her Dad came into money later on..... so it's not like she's always had a silver spoon.

Sorry, yes I react in the same way, the pp should read.

Norman Collier has left the building.......

harpsichordcarrier · 25/11/2005 21:18

worrying about what shop you buy your clothes etc frm is Exceptionally Common
proper posh people don't buy their own furniture, shop at jumble sales, charity shops... wear hand me downs
(some of them don't tend to wash much eitehr but that's another thread)

expatinscotland · 25/11/2005 21:19

'Oh and afore mentioned Jan is not from a wealthy family originally. Her Dad came into money later on..... so it's not like she's always had a silver spoon.'

That explains why she is so gauche and tasteless.

IntergalacticTheRedNosedWalrus · 25/11/2005 21:19

Genuinely posh people tend to be poor also. Look at the Fulfords

IntergalacticTheRedNosedWalrus · 25/11/2005 21:20

This Jan probably has halitosis and hairy pits

Janh · 25/11/2005 21:21

Unlike the fragrant moi, you mean?

(twitch)

IntergalacticTheRedNosedWalrus · 25/11/2005 21:22

not you, obv. I bet your pits are a smooth as a baby's bum.

Janh · 25/11/2005 21:23

Positively glassy, walrus dear

IntergalacticTheRedNosedWalrus · 25/11/2005 21:24

Mind you, I can't talk, as I have a touch of the Fatima Whitbreads at the mo.

harpsichordcarrier · 25/11/2005 21:24

that's true
posh people have generally spent all their money on booze and the gee gees
that's why I like them so much
for a working class socialist I can be very sneery about nouveaus like this silly cow

moondog · 25/11/2005 21:35

Oh I'm with expat on this one-love a bargain, hate being ripped off.
Yeah,Matalan is great!
It amazes me how cheap nice clothes are now. They seem to cost less (inflation allowed!) than they did about 10 years ago.

Loads of my furniture is second hand and it's what I love most of all.I spend hours restoring old (traditional Welsh) blankets that I generally find in sodden filthy piles in junk shops.
My children wear and play with a tonne of second hand stuff.

I've just read 'Is it just me or is everything shit?' which was spot on in parts, especially with regards to this sort of attitude.
They rail (amongst other things) at the smug 'work hard/play hard' brigade...

'we think this equates to radical high-living rather than just alternating between the twin modes of droney worker and droney consumer.'

frogs · 25/11/2005 21:47

Oh yes, conspicuous consumption is v. common. My mum has converted all her smart friends to shop at Lidl and Primark. They now competitively compare bargains. Some of them are super-posho, and all tight as gnats' arses. Mum now v. pissed off as she can't palm off Lidl/Primark bargains as pressies cos all her mates are in on the secret of cheapness.

Janh · 25/11/2005 21:49

The only prob with lovely cheap Matalan now is the guilt of wondering who made the stuff so cheaply...DD1 had a small binge this week and I have now burdened her with my conscience (E Europe/Far East sweat-shops sprng to mind )

moondog · 25/11/2005 21:52

Yes Jan...unfortunately one person's bargain is someone else's blood and tears...

Secondhand is the way to go.There should be massive organised clothes swaps-a nationwide network.

paolosgirl · 25/11/2005 21:56

It's only common people who would never shop in places like Lidl and Ikea. People with class know a bargain when they see one

Personally, I think if you'd rather spend an extra £100 or whatever just for the label, then you are to be pitied. When there are children dying of starvation in the world, it kind of puts our consumer-driven society to shame
