pruni I excelled at school too, was top of everything except needlework (still cant do it)
but wasted it when I turned 16 and rebelled in a big way for being "bright".
regretted it ever since

pruni, I will never fulfil the potential i had but I am happy as I am with kids, dh and family.
essbee I used to have pink hair too, loved it

Tbh all these education threads scare me as I remember the potential I had and I threw it away just to rebel against my parents who I felt pushed me iykwim.

Carl, what was the 'reason for it all'?

I think I peaked at 2! Have very little application, I'm afraid. And am v lazy.

Blu · 15/11/2005 14:16

No.

Was often described as 'imaginitive' in a rather ambivalent tone, and was captain of the athletics team.

Snap Pruni, was top of class in primamry school, think it went a bit to pot when teenage hormones kicked in, I deliberately failed my latin o'level because I wanted to do art & hadn't been allowed to.

I did go to Uni but things got even worse there, scraped a 2:2 and could have done so much better.

Left Uni in 1992 into massive recession, didn;t get a "graduate" job until 1995.

Stayed at same company for 10 years because I liked the people so much, but did nothing for my career.

Now SAHM, but not really through choice, and wondering what the h*ll to do next.

saadia · 15/11/2005 15:15

I was very bright at my school, had a very advanced reading age, couldn't understand why other children took so long to understand things, even at secondary things came really easily. My Latin teacher once even said that I was more intelligent than her, and my maths teacher said I showed flashes of brilliance. I had and still have a sharp memory.

But by A Levels I was more normal and found things a struggle, which I wasn't really prepared for. My first year at Uni I came top in both my subjects in my year, but it was a four year course and by the end I kind of lost interest and really didn't do that well.

Career-wise as well I certainly didn't live up to expectations, others who got less good results than me have done better.

why do some of you say you went to Oxbridge? Surely an individual goes to Oxford or Cambridge. (Or Oxford and Cambridge) A group of people, some of whom went to Oxford and some of whom went to Cambridge, went to Oxbridge. Very strange.

Blandmum · 15/11/2005 16:46

Though of as very bright in Infants school (teachers would comment to mum, very early reader etc)

Crap in Primary, still have awful h/w and can't spell, mental maths also crap.

Best in school at secondary....loved every minute.

Loved uni, not amazing degree 2:1 but went to oxford and went on into research

Blandmum · 15/11/2005 16:51

Should have said, loved the work in seconadry and doing well at it. Was badly bullied for being 'clever;

dinosaur · 15/11/2005 16:54

Maybe they're trying to maintain their anonymity, hatstand. I twigged who motherinferior is in RL from just a few details she posted about her time at, er, Oxbridge .

weeelll, oxbridge is just what you say isn't it, you get used to being put in that "category" and start putting yourself in it. (i went to oxford) since we are talking about doing well at school, going to oxford or cambridge is supposedly a measure of that since they are harder to get into - again, supposedly. i certainly knew a lot of daft idiots there who proceeded t9o get top jobs in merchant banking so no, i don't know why i mentioned it at all

tamum · 15/11/2005 16:58

I was bright until I was about 9, early reader blah blah, then OK at secondary and uni but no more than OK really, then got the bit between my teeth with my PhD and now love academia. My brother was all-star high achiever and has found life much harder generally. I think it's so hard to judge how well your children are going to do in later life from their performance at school so am completely relaxed about it.

dinosaur · 15/11/2005 17:00

I was good at passing exams, which is how I got into Oxford from bog standard comprehensive. Did too well in Oxford first year exams as I got a first - bad mistake as then everyone except me was disappointed when I only got a 2:1 in my finals .

Nemo1977 · 15/11/2005 17:07

Same here ish, at school did really well at any exams, did 5 alevels etc then went to uni and did a psychology degree got a 2.1 cos I p**sed about a lot. Although I did go back and do a msc in management.
Now none of it is being used as am sahm and will be for at least next 4 yrs by which time I will probably retrain in something else as will be completely deskilled.

ninah · 15/11/2005 17:11
