Well, I hope I don't get flung off for this! For those of you who don't know (as discussed on the 'Eastenders' thread, for some unknown reason!) I was sent an email of 200 song lyrics from the 1980's, the idea being to name the song title and performer (Never Mind the Buzzcocks style). Me and my friend's did okay-ish and we had great fun saying 'Oh, I'm sure I know this one...' and singing them all (loudly and badly). I figured if we can have an Eastenders thread then surely a little light entertainment such as this will be allowed? I hope it provokes a lively discussion though...?! I've put the first 24 on for now and if you like them I can cut and paste the rest, sound fair?! Enjoy.....

1 My job is very boring I’m an office clerk
2 First she’ll take your pride; turn it on its side

3 Some way after midnight in my wildest fantasies
4 Don’t say you’re easy on me

5 My head is in a spin. My feet don’t touch the ground

6 I never did good things. I never did bad things
7 We are the ones that make a brighter day
8 So he told it all and, in return, he got a credit card and a Thunderbird

9 And if you say run, I’ll run to you

10 Ronnie Kray, do you know my name?

11 What do you think? Can’t think at all.
12 You won’t settle down, you’ve got both feet off the ground

13 All we wanted to do is have a good time, then they went and took our house away

14 Imagination never lets us take the blame
15 Don’t need no credit card to ride this train
16 I’ve been to paradise

17 All the world is football shaped, its just for me to kick its face

18 He’s his family’s pride and joy, his mother’s little Golden Boy

19 Where do we go from here? Is it down to the lake I fear?

20 Across the Serengeti

21 Hand in hand is the only way to land and always the right way round

22 I’ve got this feeling of emotion, a sudden sense of liberty

23 All I wanted was a word

24 We’re not going to live in silence, we’re not going to live in fear

I only know number 7 off the top of my head! "We Are The World" by USA for Africa.

Which 80's popstars do you miss, just as an aside. I really liked Jermaine Stewart. He only had 3 hits in this country because the radio stations wouldn't help him get airplay. He died in 1997 of an AIDS related illness and the press didn't even care. I only found out a few months ago via an American website.

Ailsa · 06/10/2001 23:24

Number 5 I think is Kelly Marie (not sure about the song title though)

Number 14 is Go West - We close our eyes

Some of the others are really bugging me now, when I've managed to get the printer re-installed I'm going to print the list and have some fun at work.

Remember these stars/groups from the eighties?

Haircut 100, Men at Work, Mr Mister, Howard Jones, and not forgetting Spandau Ballet, Duran Duran and Paul Young

Ems · 07/10/2001 09:51

I'm going to be singin No5 all week now, its going round and round my head. Great fun, I'll try and guess some more later.

I remember thinking I was going to marry Nick Heyward, I must have only been about 11, I think it was the arran jumper.

Jodee · 07/10/2001 12:36

Ooh Lizzer, my mind is racing with groovy 80s tunes! Oh my misspent youth - listening to Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet etc on my record player (remember them!) when I should have been doing my homework.

Don't forget to put us out of our misery with the answers in a couple of days!

As an aside, hands up if you have heard of these groups:
DJ Otzi, City High, Liberty, Alien Ant Farm, Uncle Kracker, Silicone Soul, Blue. No? Well they are all in the top 20 at the moment. If it wasn't for Kylie at No. 1 I wouldn't know any of them. I think we should still have a big place in our hearts for the music we grew up listening to, but I don't want to be called an old fogey by my teenage kids for not knowing what music they are into! (I've got a bit of time, my ds is only 18 months!)

Rhiannon · 07/10/2001 13:24

Brain of Britain here thinks no 1 is Echo Beach by Martha and the Muffins. Still struggling wih the rest but I was on the winning quiz night team last night! Yippee I won a bottle of Bucks Fizz! R.

Candy · 07/10/2001 14:55

Gosh I must be really sad! I know about 10 of them! Were any of them more indie Lizzer cos I'm a real 80s babe but it needs to be The Smiths or Jesus and Mary Chain or something for me to be sure of getting them!

Candy · 07/10/2001 14:56

Forget to say - brilliant idea for a thread Lizzer - more please!

Lizzer, do we have to post all the answers before we are fed some more?

Jodee · 07/10/2001 15:27

Oops! I was Googling and stumbled across the website, so I won't spoil it for the rest of you, but - Candy - "Hey baby what you trying to say"...

Bloss. You're back! How is Oz?

Wornout · 08/10/2001 11:15

Rhiannon, you were right to No 1.
No 2. Story of the Blues- Mighty Whah
No 3. Hero - Bonnie Tyler
No 7 sounds like Omd - not sure about this
No 9 David Bowie
No14 Close our etes - Go west
No16 Paradise - God knows who
No19 Fantastic day Haircut 101 (Mark Fox the bongo player was my teacher at school)

Wornout · 08/10/2001 11:23

Forgot to say loved Gensis, Level 42, UB40 ( I can here you all moaning), Paul Young, Simple Minds, Thomas Dolby, Howard Jones and Lionel Richie, and can remember alot of odd groups.
King
Nena
Dollar (uuuugggg)
Modern Romance
Kagagoogoo oh the list is endless.

Dixie · 08/10/2001 12:01

Really not too sure but these are my guesses...

No15 is Huey Lewis & the news - power of love
No 19 - Haircut 100 as already said
No 23 - Is it Madness? The one about Michael Caine
No 24 - Is it Tina Turner - Thunderdome?

So many of the others sound familar, still working on them.

16 is I've been to paradise, but I've never been to me (some very religious lady whose name I've forgotten)

Wornout · 08/10/2001 12:30

No 20 not sure but sounds like something from Toto, where are these old names coming from? I am with you Pamina, Back combing, bright make up & wide belts over rather large and baggy t-shirts (I was only skinny then) must have been like something out of Fright Night! Or perhaps an extra from the Thriller video.

Marina · 08/10/2001 13:49

I can contribute no 18, the wonderful Undertones, "My perfect cousin".
And no 6 is from the equally fab Heaven 17 "Temptation".
I am proud of the fact that I did not know the Huey Lewis or the Bonnie Tyler ones.
More please Lizzer! Brilliant thread.

Alli · 08/10/2001 14:56

Sad anorak that I am, I can add to the following:

8 Annie, I'm Not Your Daddy, Kid Creole and the Coconuts
11 INXS, Need you Tonight

I could probably find all the others in my back copies of Smash Hits - May 1980 - July 1986! I did say I was sad!

Alli · 08/10/2001 15:02

I think number 6 is Ashes to Ashes by Bowie?

Tigermoth · 08/10/2001 15:10

Ohh yes ... Temptation by Heaven 17. A wonderful song. Anyone remember 'Living on the ceiling' by Blancmange? The two are so linked in my mind. They were the only tracks I ever played, loud and late into the night.

Marina, I think you're right about number 6. I must say my first thought was 'Major Tom' but didn't that come out in the 70's?

Number 12 was something called (?) January, Feburary. Can't think who by, but I can hum the tune, unfortunately.

Number 20, I'm 90% sure, is in one The Clash's repertoire of songs - London is Burning, I think.

Alli · 08/10/2001 15:42

Tigermoth - agree with you about January/February - Barbara Dickson sang it.

Stompy · 08/10/2001 22:18

Is no. 22 New Order?

Tigermoth · 09/10/2001 08:38

Oh what a howler! How did I get London is burning (TV series) muddled up with 'London Calling' by the Clash. I am showing my age.
