Do you live in Surrey?

If so, where and what is it like?

We are (hopefully!) soon going to be house-hunting (renting) and have no restrictions really on where we'll end up. We really like Reigate so far but am interested to know of any other nice family places to live.

Thanks in advance, Dinny

I am in West Ewell which is near Epsom. Lovely Schools and I live here so it's wonderful

dinny · 11/11/2005 06:47

LadyTopham, that's what I feel, the bits of Surrey I've seen near London are just like London. Actually, we are officially in Surrey now but it's Merton and totally shit.

I didn't realise you were so close by, Dinny.
I'm in Wallington.

Bloody hate it, but finger crossed should be exchanging contracts today.

alicatsg · 11/11/2005 06:53

Farnham too far to commute? blimey, I commute from Godalming and thats perfectly do-able.

Parts of surrey are more countrified than others. I love it round here but then I get my London fix through work. Prob with Surrey is that is vvv commuter belt so its hard to meet people in my view.

dinny · 11/11/2005 06:54

oh, hello! wasn't expecting you to be around now! I'm at work - bleurgh.

hey, we may exchange next week! PLEASE, GOD! We're in Mitcham and I hate it soooo much.

Will probably move to Reigate, so quite near Sussex (is it?) Where are you off to?

dinny · 11/11/2005 06:55

Alicatsg - do you drive in from there? Suppose Farnham is on the A3....

OP posts:
alicatsg · 11/11/2005 07:01

have done but tbh the train is easier and just cheaper once you factor in congestion charge/parking etc (am based in central london)

the trick with driving is to go early

LadyTophamHatt · 11/11/2005 07:02

Blimey, Mitcham. you're getting closer...and I have to say I agree with you in the awfulness.

We're moving to Seaford which is pretty much smack bang in the middle of Brighton and Eastbourne. Our new house is about 15 minutes walk from the beach (about.5 as the crow flies). It also about 5 mintues in the car from big wide open country side.

A million mile away from over crowded, smelly, dirty litter riden Wallington.

dinny · 11/11/2005 07:03

dh has to drive as needs his car for work...

only has to get to Battersea though. am going to persuade him to have a look at that bit of Surrey!

Guildford, great shopping, great schools and very picteresque. Straight on to the A3 and easy to get Battersea

dinny · 11/11/2005 07:25

actually in Guildford or are there nice villages around it, Kaz?

OP posts:
Kaz33 · 11/11/2005 08:13

We live in guildford, ten minutes walk to the centre of guildford and one minute walk to the downs. But we are very privileged and it is not cheap, though there is a wide range of choice of different size houses. Some other areas of Guildford are not so nice, especially north Guildford is to be avoided but as a rule central Guildford is good.

There are also lovely villages around Guildford. Godalming (town), Elstead, Shalford, Milford - all have good access on to the A3

HandbagAddiction · 11/11/2005 08:39

Another vote for Guildford and surrounding towns / villages - Godalming and Farnham being the bigger towns. I'm based in Milford....and I commute into London every day via train - half of which stop at Clapham Junction on the way up to Waterloo - if that's any help to your DH.

Think the area around Guildford, etc is fab personally.....

dinny · 11/11/2005 08:52

just looking at website re Farnham - it looks soooooo nice! maybe could persuade dh to get train and leave car in London....

Hi Batters - where are you in SW London (think we chatted ages ago, are you in Balham?)

We considered Epsom...liked it but it just felt the same (but posher) as where we live now, in some ways. Hence looking further out. God knows where we'll end up!

and, she butts in, getting on a bus is okay but once you've had to get in a car, drive to the station, park, get on a train etc, it's a bit of a fag. I moved from London to Surrey and, while not quite so extreme as KS re Surrey's failings, do find it a bit odd sometimes.
