I know we've done this before...but how horrible are these slogans on boys tops?!

In Asda today, just having a mooch about and looking at tops for my ds who's 4. I was spoiled for choice..

'I'm with STUPID' (complete with large pointing finger)

'Forget presents...Give me money!'

OR..

'I've been good all year, so it'd better be worth it!' (emphasised with huge devil looking skull and crooked halo)

I have said on here before that I usually quite like Asda, but I can almost feel a Victor Meldrew style letter of protest boiling up in me for that little offering. He's 4. A sweet gentle little boy, just a baby still. I know I don't have to buy it and I suppose it's someones idea of 'funnnee', but it makes me feel very sad.

The rest of the boys clothes were nothing special either - the usual array of sludgy colours. Up to about 18mths - all very nice and acceptable, then they seem to think little boys turn into mini yobs or old men.

it's tack.

Marina · 04/11/2005 12:31

I'm a bit sad about a jolly emerald green top for girls in Next, with a little girl singing "la, la, la" on the front and "I'm not listening" on the back.
So I'm with you on this TinyGang. Funny to some maybe but it encourages unconscious stereotyping

JoolsToo · 04/11/2005 12:31

cack more like

soapbox · 04/11/2005 12:32

Hate them with a passion!

spidermama · 04/11/2005 12:32

My nearly four year old hates boys clothes. I agree about sludgy colours and those so-called funny slogans are really horrible.

spidermama · 04/11/2005 12:34

I think it's a cultural thing from the uS.
I've noticed similar nasty cartoons with angry attitudy teen-type tots.

JonesTheSteam · 04/11/2005 12:34

Sounds terrible - been to Asda myself this morning but didn't look at the clothes!!!

Don't like slogans either - the most 'slogany' top DS has says 'cheeky monkey' on it (with a picture of a monkey!!!!!)

(Bought DS a lovely top in Adams this morning - beige with bright blue and red stripes round the neck and arms, with a fab appliqued robot on it and and the word ROBOT above it!!)

My mum's neighbour bought DD a jumper saying something like 'If mummy says no, ask granny on it'. I hated it - she wore it once - to visit her. (And never again )

Marina · 04/11/2005 12:34

Still flying the flag for pretty colours for all is he spidermama - way to go, little man

aloha · 04/11/2005 12:34

Well, I went to Asda and bought ds some very nice soft navy cords, two long sleeved t-shirts, absolutley plain in navy and cream. One jolly t-shirt with a bat on it for Halloween (a friendly bat by the same illustrator as Rumble in the Jungle and Farmyard Hullabaloo), and a light blue jumper with a dark blue stripe.

I also loathe agressive slogans and army type clothes for little boys.

Merlot · 04/11/2005 12:35

TinyGang - I'm totally with you on this. I too like Asda's value for money kids clothes. But this is disgusting!! What on earth do they want us to breed - mini hooligans!

My situation is made worse by the fact that my (just) 2 year old is wearing 4-5 year old tops. FGS - I dont want him wearing this sort of thing! Rant over.... May well join you with a V.Meldrew letter!

Hopefully, they won't sell very well, and there'll be loads left to put in the sale at Christmas and still no-one will buy them.

weesaidie · 04/11/2005 12:39

As I might have sid as a teenager -

Ha ha. Not.

weesaidie · 04/11/2005 12:39

Or said even.

LIZS · 04/11/2005 12:40

Can't help looking at such and thinking that they are a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy. Rather like the tarty girls tops "So many boys, so little time" et al. Tend to be more conservative with ds' clothes (7) - skateboards, surfers, soccer etc - cool doesn't have to be Goth, combat and so on. Used to buy a lot in H and M and Debenhams.

JonesTheSteam · 04/11/2005 12:40

I suppose people must buy them or the shops wouldn't keep selling them!!!

Marina · 04/11/2005 12:41

I think poor old Bobbybob got a good bashing on here for mentioning some similar tack-o product sold in NZ. Nice to see so many people cross about these stupid, tacky clothes this time round

Cavie · 04/11/2005 12:42

I don't like tops with slogans generally (on adults or children). They're just not funny, in part due to the very reason that it's not the wearer's joke. It's a mass-produced bad joke in the same vein as greetings cards.

With children though it's a cruel joke, since the child doesn't get it. It's the parent's idea of humour and in a way the child becomes part of the joke, and in part the butt of it (since they don't understand it) IYSWIM.

gladstone · 04/11/2005 12:44

Another 'killjoy' totally agreeing with you - hate them, don't think they're funny, or cute, or anything else, other than offensive.

Also agree about the colours. I don't want ds always dressed in brown, dark blue and murky green (in the same way that if I had a little girl I wouldn't want her in sparkly pink all the time). Asda and Tesco do some great, cheap, good value clothes but their range is always so gender stereotyped.

troublesmummy · 04/11/2005 12:44

Dp has slogans on some of his shirts and i think they are really funny. But he is 24, not 4. I agree with you. Its wrong!!!

At the risk of saying something contraversial, its no wonder the attitude of SOME kids is so bad if this sort of thing is around. Its like telling them its ok to be rude and cheeky and it isn't

Marina · 04/11/2005 12:45

I think because the cheapness of the ranges may mean little imagination or budget went into the design, gladstone. But it can be done - H & M's stuff is moderately priced and full of cheery colours

highlander · 04/11/2005 12:46

I too think they're horrible.

hockeymum · 04/11/2005 12:51

Horrid horrid horrid. That's what I think of the boys and the girls clothes around at the moment. They start either really rebellious (boys) or tarty (girls) so young. I saw a pair of tracksuit trousers for a 2 year old girl the other day with babe written across the bum, others had tart and sexy written on them. What kind of message are we giving to our kids? Also, we know there are paedophiles out there too, do we want to encourage them to look at our kids backsides?

Also, seen a top for a 3 year old boy (not sure what website now) with a slogan "I love boobies!" might be vaguelly funny on a teeny newborn (not mine though) but on a 3 year old its just gross.

Why must we encourage our tiny toddlers to be brats or tarts, let them be tiny and lovely while we still have a choice in what they wear!

rant over
