I know we've done this before...but how horrible are these slogans on boys tops?!

In Asda today, just having a mooch about and looking at tops for my ds who's 4. I was spoiled for choice..

'I'm with STUPID' (complete with large pointing finger)

'Forget presents...Give me money!'

OR..

'I've been good all year, so it'd better be worth it!' (emphasised with huge devil looking skull and crooked halo)

I have said on here before that I usually quite like Asda, but I can almost feel a Victor Meldrew style letter of protest boiling up in me for that little offering. He's 4. A sweet gentle little boy, just a baby still. I know I don't have to buy it and I suppose it's someones idea of 'funnnee', but it makes me feel very sad.

The rest of the boys clothes were nothing special either - the usual array of sludgy colours. Up to about 18mths - all very nice and acceptable, then they seem to think little boys turn into mini yobs or old men.

They arent everyones taste but i dont think society will collapse into a pit of hooliganism and debauchery because of it!

Thank you for that, normsnockers! 'Vulgar' is such an underrated word, I feel.

But actually, there are some terrible tops around for girls, too, as witness one of dd1's classmates, then 8, turning up on a non-uniform day in a sparkly T-shirt emblazoned with the words, "Spirit of 69 Porn Star".

TinyGang · 04/11/2005 13:13

I look at some of the baby clothes in shops and so wish they's extend the range for older boys. Nice bright jolly colours and designs.

Aloha - Saw the fun bat top! Now that was nice - my ds would like that, but none left in his size sadly. More along those lines would be lovely. Or something with a big lion or tiger on it.

He likes a picture on his clothes sometimes, but something bright, fun and relevant to him. Not some horrid skull, or devil with two fingers up at the world

There are some nice things out there I know, but they sure take some finding.

dd1s friend wore a t-shirt the other day that said: Yes, It Is All About Me.

and she is a spoilt brat as well

TinyGang · 04/11/2005 13:19

Actually, it's true, some of the girls clothes seem terribly grown up. I find with my girls, I can still find nice things, even though I am rather shocked at what they could have if I didn't mind them wearing it. But boys clothes can be dire. The colours are so dull.

I agree with the earlier comment that the child (hopefully) doesn't 'get' the slogan on clothes and so becomes the butt of the joke, as it were.

Saw a little girl about 11ish with her mum the other day wearing a top saying Come and get me you know you want to!I was appalled and so was dp

LadySherlockofLGJ · 04/11/2005 13:20

I hate them, Ds had one that I bought in a moment of madness, which said Who wants to grow up, and on the back it said of I don't !!!!

When I got it home, I thought better of it and he never wears it out.

QueenEagle · 04/11/2005 13:29

dd wears a vest top with the slogan "No f**cking angel" on it.

What's wrong with that?

LadySherlockofLGJ · 04/11/2005 13:30

QE I presume you are joking, so I will

Lmccrean · 04/11/2005 13:35

think asda is bad??... check this out My team manager showed me it the other day..!

Lonelymum · 04/11/2005 13:44

I am looking for nice clothes for my son aged 9 but would need age 10 clothes. He is not into football or skateboarding, I don't like those horrible slogans or cartoon charcters, and there are only so many things you can buy with surfing pictures on. That said, I am not after checked shirts or the French idea of what boys should wear. I have had a quick look at Boden and know I can't afford it, except maybe sale stuff. At the moment, I mainly buy for him from M&S but they only sometimes have decent stuff.

Anyone got any idea where I could try next?

troublesmummy · 04/11/2005 13:46

Debenhams have some nice clothes for boys, and so do BHS. That said though, i've never been shopping for a 9 year old boy!

gladstone · 04/11/2005 14:05

Lonelymum, Pumpkin Patch do some great clothes, and there's lots for older boys (I thought it was mainly toddlers). Very good quality, cheaper than Boden, and there's a sale on at the moment. Current range does seem quite 'sporty', but see what you think

Blandmum · 04/11/2005 14:05

I saw a teenager in a top today that said, 'Alcatraz prison, Psycho ward'...MMMM so nice on all sorts of levels

codKEMP · 04/11/2005 14:05

can i parp politely?

Blandmum · 04/11/2005 14:08

Dunno? have you ever parped politly before ?

codKEMP · 04/11/2005 14:08

and balme it on anyone else?

Lonelymum · 04/11/2005 14:12

Thanks gladstone, couldn't get that site tot show me anything else though! The clothes you linked to are better than some but still have numbers over them and are in rather dull colours.

Cod, if you want to parp, I would be interested to know what you dress your older son in, or is it football gear or grey/brown/navy/black clothes with slogans, numbers or cartoon characters on?

RnBlood · 04/11/2005 14:13

I have to agree. Even H&M and Next have loads of skulls. My boys still wear cords and knitted cardigans!

Lonelymum, are you a non-Vertbaudet person? Because I get lots of nice, cheerful colours for ds from them. I think their children's clothes go up to age 12 before they make the leap into teen grunge/label-mania
