I know we've done this before...but how horrible are these slogans on boys tops?!

In Asda today, just having a mooch about and looking at tops for my ds who's 4. I was spoiled for choice..

'I'm with STUPID' (complete with large pointing finger)

'Forget presents...Give me money!'

OR..

'I've been good all year, so it'd better be worth it!' (emphasised with huge devil looking skull and crooked halo)

I have said on here before that I usually quite like Asda, but I can almost feel a Victor Meldrew style letter of protest boiling up in me for that little offering. He's 4. A sweet gentle little boy, just a baby still. I know I don't have to buy it and I suppose it's someones idea of 'funnnee', but it makes me feel very sad.

The rest of the boys clothes were nothing special either - the usual array of sludgy colours. Up to about 18mths - all very nice and acceptable, then they seem to think little boys turn into mini yobs or old men.

Martianbishop, a teenager here got prosecuted the other day for wearing a Cradle of Filth T-shirt. Dunno if I'd go THAT far....but yes, I hate those T-shirts. Along with the ones for girls with 'Babe' or whatever on them.

Lonelymum · 04/11/2005 14:17

John Lewis had a lovely ornagey brown jumper for ds2 the other day - his favourite colour is orange - but it was £25. For a jumper for a child!

www.jako-o.com or jako-o.de

A German company, but site has info in English and they deliver across the EU. Site seems to be down atm, but usually have lots of lovely bright slogan-free basics up to age 12.

codKEMP · 04/11/2005 14:19

codKEMP · 04/11/2005 14:20

ds2 wore a pri of jeans a wallabies long sleeved t shirt ( from pal in oz) and a fleece

Lonelymum · 04/11/2005 14:21

Marina - don't like knickerbockers on boys of any age, but I daresay I have missed some nice things. I threw away my vertbaudet catalogue the other day as I knew it contained a lovely mix and match set of outifts in blue, orange and red which I desperately wanted to buy for ds3 but he really doesn't need any other clothes. So I threw it away so I would resist the temptation. Don't remember anything in particular for ds1.

wessexgirl · 04/11/2005 14:22

Best friend is Spanish and her ds has a massive array of beautiful, colourful clothes bought for him by her family over there. Why can't we get that kind of stuff here? No fair.

codKEMP · 04/11/2005 14:22

codKEMP · 04/11/2005 14:23

slapheadsrock · 04/11/2005 14:31

SOOOO glad I'm not the only one with problems choosing clothes for kids to let them be kids.

Tesco currently have son=me nice girly things in which came as a great surprise.

Pumpkin Patch is where I got my ds his last set of clothes, and you could also try Vertbaudet.

Sorry if these have already been suggested - not read whole thread.

spidermama · 04/11/2005 14:35

I also hate the big wheeled, scary truck type things.

Actually, I hate logos full stop. They ruin otherwise tasteful garments.

No, don't like them, but do have 1 t shirt (passed on to ds2 from ds1) which says "I'm A Scary Monster" and there's is a little boy poking his head out of a monster costume (a la Where The Wild Things Are). That I do like.

flamesparrow · 04/11/2005 15:09

Lmccrean - nice site ...

I've decided today that I love H&M - lots of bright colours . I don't have a boy though, so no idea what their boy stuff is like.

I don't mind the gypsy skirts from 5 up, but the ones I have seen for 2 year olds are just silly - surely a child needs the ability to walk successfully before they are in long skirts??? With all these things though, it is a matter of what you put them with - an embroidered gypsy top is fine as long as its with plain jeans... not a whole style ensemble type thing.

I've decided that they don't do enough dungarees for 2-3 yr olds though (girls) - DD is still needing help with the loo anyway, so its not an issue there, and she looks sooo sweet in her one pair!

Completely gone off topic now though...

fireflyfairy2 · 04/11/2005 15:44

Have you tried Adams Flame? I got dd a pair in there last week!! ((totally besides the point that she HATES them and refused to put them on her ))

flamesparrow · 04/11/2005 15:45

That'd be the one and only pair she's got!! With pink stitching?

My MIL came back from Mallorca yesterday with an absolute HIDEOSITY for my dd1 - a tshirt with a scowling, earringed, bandana-d biker on it and the slogan 'Born to be Wild'. The sun must ahve gone to her head, as she would never normally buy anything like this. I had to smile and say, "O, how funny" etc, while secretly thinking "When can I reasonably send this to the charity shop?" (if they'd have it!

Dd will wear it over my dead body. Perhaps once, for MIL's benefit, then NEVER AGAIN.

(Funny thing was, dd ignore the tshirt and was much more interested in the pencil with a wooden duck topper.Well done dd1 -your taste beat your nannie's!)

bobbybob · 05/11/2005 10:00

Apparently they are just a bit of fun and we shouldn't be cross at the shops for selling them.

Speechless at that site!!

My Daughter has the 'Daddy drinks because I cry' t-shirt. Nothing to do with me but it seems to appeal to her dad and her uncles sense of humor so have to hide it when they have to dress her.
She also has one with granny magnet it on it and this also seems to get a smile from passers by.

Blandmum · 05/11/2005 16:33

Dh bough dd a tea shirt she liked that said, 'Liked it, pestered, mum bought it'

It lasted one wash and went to charity!

paolosgirl · 05/11/2005 16:35

Another slogan-hater here too. They're not funny, they're cheap, they're tacky and they're usually making some derogatory or aggressive statement - something which I actively discourage in DD and DS.
DS is nearly 8, so it's getting very hard to steer him away from the skateboarder type things - but I'd rather have that than nylon tracksuits the neds up here wear. Over my dead body will we ever buy him sports gear for anything other than sports.

shalaa · 05/11/2005 19:57

Lmccrean - at that website

A baby wearing a t-shirt saying "hung like a 5 year old"

"All daddy wanted was a blowjob"

"playground pimp"

"I like being spanked"

Can't believe people dress their babies in these Personally I buy plain white grows for my baby and tie dye them.
