Claims to fame

Apologies if this has been done before..

So, anyone got any claims to fame (any anonymous famous peeps can keep quiet if they so choose)? I have a few, all feeble, so I'll start (in no particular order) :

  1. I used to live next door to Huw Something who played PC George Garfield (baby faced, blonde one) in The Bill.

  2. Lisa Stansfield's sister lived in my Halls of Residence, and I once eavesdropped on a phone conversation she had with her (in the days when only drug dealers had mobile phones and we used to use a payphone) when she was asking her to send her some money.

  3. Man who created Postman Pat used to live down my road.

  4. Roy Castle lived in the next road when I was a child.

  5. Stood at the bar next to Mick Hucknall in The Hacienda.

  6. Have friend who is married to ex-keyboard player from Jesus Jones (remember them?). He's a postman now.

  7. Was on same course at University as John Humphrys' daughter, Kathryn. Saw her recently on This Is Your Life and she looks much better than me these days..cow.

  8. The Mock Turtles ("Can U Dig It?" ) lived a few houses down from my Mum and Dad.

  9. My children are descended from criminals on both sides. Dh can claim Captain Morgan the Pirate (of Morgan's Rum) as an ancestor, and I am descended from Jack Sheppard the Highwayman.

Told you they were feeble..anyone else have any good tales of hobnobbing with the glitterati?

Oh dear, marthamoo, it has a bit - here - in fact it's been revived today (look up!) - still, never mind, a new one is always nice and short for loading up!

marthamoo · 24/09/2003 22:01

Lord, janh, it's been done to death I do look up sometimes, honest!

Sorrrreeeeeee

If I type my name into Google it comes up with 250 (approx.) pages. Surely that makes me famous -- not!

cerys · 25/09/2003 16:40

Marthamoo, did you go to Cardiff Uni in the late 80s/early 90s?? I'm sure Lisa Stansfield's sister graduated at the same ceremony as me and that my parents saw John Humphreys there.

Northerner · 25/09/2003 16:44

I live in Harrogate and Les Dennis is in a play at our local theatre. Keep seeing him around town.

easy · 25/09/2003 16:49

Alright then, Ready....

I've been bought an Ice cream by Marlon Brando, Offered a drink by Prince Charles, and abseiled down a rock face next to Doug Scott.

Not all on the same day, obviously

Northerner · 25/09/2003 16:53

Had dinner once with Terry Christian when he was presenting The Word.

Jemma7 · 25/09/2003 16:55

Where abouts in Harrogate Northerner ? I have family in Bilton.

easy · 25/09/2003 16:55

oooh and I nearly forgot, once went out with a chap who appers in Calendar Girls (only on screen about 30 seconds). I think he was gay tho'

Linnet · 25/09/2003 20:53

My dh has met a couple of famous people.
He once served Ashley Judd in his restaurant and also Tony Robinson of Baldrick fame. Not on the same day though.

We both walked past a restaurant in London once and saw Chris Evans through the window, not sure if that should be a claim to fame or not.

Jennifer Saunders has a flat in the block of flats next to my father in law and his wife and if they see her they say Hello, apparently she's really nice. And another famous couple live in a flat upstairs from my father in law and his wife but they can't remember who the couple are as they don't watch tv and they know them by their real names and not their stage names. In all the times I've been to stay with FIL I've never even met them on the stairs.

My friend saw Billy Connolly walking down Princes street in Edinburgh once.

My other friend used to serve Ewan McGregors mum when she came to the cinema.

My Dh's boss went to school with Ewan McGregor.

My brother works in a Nightclub and has met lots of famous people.

I'm really boring as I've not actually met anyone and I can't even claim Chris Evans as it was Dh who spotted him

sunchowder · 25/09/2003 21:35

OK .....I met the UNCOLA Man at a nighclub in NYC 18 years ago (large black man, does anyone remember him?)(he went HA HA HA a lot on the commercial), on the same night I also saw Richard Belzer--he was nasty and unhappy looking and I would not consider approaching him. I met Andy Warhol at a Gallery Opening in Manhattan later that same year. I met Matt Guitar Murphy (of the Blues Brothers Movie) and had several drinks with him between sets at the Stanhope House in New Jersey. I met Leon Russel. I have also met Dave Mason (formerly in the Band Traffic - song We both Disagree). Let's see, I was four feet away from Jon Voight at the gas pump and I couldn't even breathe, he had to say hello first. Can't think of any others right now.

marthamoo · 26/09/2003 14:16

Cerys, yikes, I'm outed! Yes, graduated from Cardiff Uni in '91.

Small world, isn't it?

forestfly · 26/09/2003 14:19

I spent the night with a man out of a famous band, it was like something out of a film, never to be seen again as he rode off into the sunset (maybe i was just a sad groupie )

cerys · 26/09/2003 14:40

marthamoo, yes, I graduated 1991 as well. We are not the only Mumsnet Cardiff graduates - Bron was arriving as I was leaving. Who knows who else is out there

I'm curious about which course you did, but a bit nervous in case we know each other. I did languages, but feel free to stay anonymous if you want!

marthamoo · 26/09/2003 20:17

Cerys,

I did English, so we would both have used the humanities library/buildings. Wonder if we know each other....?

Angiel · 26/09/2003 20:18

I met Jim Branning (Eastenders) at the Little Chef a few weekends ago.

Posey · 26/09/2003 21:13

Looked after a few famousish people when nursing, including a West Ham footballer, someone out of London's Burning and Billy Ocean's mother.

Shared the swimming pool with Paul Whitehouse, Dev out of Corrie, Stewpot of Grange Hill (all accompanied by their kids).

Passed THIS close to John Hannah in Islington (phwoar)

On "hello" terms with Linda Robson (our daughters go to the same school)

AND as a teenager I appeared on Songs of Praise.
Get the video out if the family needs a really good laugh as there's a close up of me (full screen of my face and 80s hairdo) for the entire chorus of "We Plough the fields and scatter". It was harvest festival edition from Grimsby, 1985!!
Now I don't tell many people that.

Oh and just today I saw the chap that played Geoffrey Formiles in "George and Mildred" in Sainsburys.
My local Waitrose is quite good for star spotting, this week I saw Phillip Franks (boyfriend of C Zeta-J in Darling Buds of May)and later Heartbeat and occasionally Countdown. Also seen in there: Kate Winslet, Lowri Turner, local newsreader...

Finally my husband stood next to Ned Sherrin at a urinal and found he just couldn't go anymore!!

tallulah · 27/09/2003 11:18

Vic Reeves sat in front of me at the cinema a few months ago. DH saw Sue Pollard at Charing Cross station this Wednesday. He also followed Bob Mortimer around Tescos a little while ago, but I wasn't convinced it was him.

Once dropped carrots on Barry Took (used to do Points of View- he did, not me, I was waitressing). Also spoke to short bearded pianist whose name eludes me... Met Boney M (to chat to, and they were lovely!). Also Chris Patton & a number of other politicians & dignitaries (& saw Princess Anne from a distance- she's really short!)

I was in a community production of Peter Pan at Easter with Brian Blessed (Paul Hendy was the producer). DS3 was in an earlier Peter Pan with Toyah Wilcox & Dave Willets..

Last but not least, I was in the Daily Mail in 1981- photo and interview!!!

tallulah · 27/09/2003 11:19

Ooh, I forgot- I was on Kilroy in 1987 & got to speak. It was a programme about noisey neighbours!

fio2 · 27/09/2003 12:31

I havent got many but..

My Uncle was in an band with Roy Wood

I have often bumped into Nick Hancock in Mothercare World in Stoke on Trent

My Dads Aunt was the leader of the CoE missionaries and lived next door to Ted Heath

Um I think that is it...yawn, how boring

Janstar · 27/09/2003 15:26

1 Used to be big drinking buddy of a minor TV & film actor Dicken Ashworth (Geoff Horton in Corrie, Alan Partridge in Brookside) but he moved away.

2 dd1 has Simon le Bon's nephew in her class at school.

3 Met Judith Chalmers in the ladies loos at a Charity Cricket match. She apologised over not being able to flush the loo.

4 Met Steve Davis at same match and took photo of dd1 with him.

5 Ken Livingstone phoned me once to tell me he had cancelled another meeting to come to one I'd invited him to (Residents Ass) - he came to it too.

6 As I've mentioned before, one of my drinking buddies was the Millionaire contestant who was intereviewed by the news after giving evidence at Major Cough's trial. He has been a contestant 4 times, and I have accompanied him twice, so does drinking the the bar with Chris Tarrant and David Briggs count?

7 A friend of mine used to nanny for the fabulous actor Bob Peck (sadly no longer with us) and his wife sent me some of their children's designer cast-offs when I was a struggling single mum.

8 I collect signed books and have met numerous authors at book signings.

9 Saw David Seaman in Mothercare Watford.

10 Travelled in a hotel lift with Chris de Burgh.

11 Regularly hobnob with friends who have been champions on quiz shows like Mastermind, 15-1, etc.

12 Knocked on Peter O'Toole's front door when canvassing as a Tupperware manager, but no one answered.

13 Held Tupperware party in house of Andrew Ridgeley's aunt. She didn't know what had happened to his comeback either.

14 Ex BIL went to school with G Michael and A Ridgeley. Says he broke AR's nose the first time.

15 My dad played cricket with David Essex and bowled him out.

16 A good friend of mine is mates with Status Quo and has their phone nos.

17 I know the bloke who was best man at George and Alex Best's wedding. A complete p**shead as you can imagine.

18 The landlord at my local pub is a top darts player and last week he beat Eric Bristow.

19 Have spotted Nick Leeson in local pub (he also went to same school as dds).

20 My brother is mates with someone who used to be in Sham 69.

Lots more but I'll leave it at a round 20

Janstar · 27/09/2003 15:28

Have just realised half of my list involve pubs and drinking buddies - so now you know (blushing emoticon)

fio2 · 27/09/2003 15:39

Janstar my Mum gave Chris Tarrant a drink at tea when he opened her school fete(at a special shcool) Oh she she thinks hes lovely!!!!

Russell Boulter opened our dds school fete this year (he was in The Bill and was Duffys girlfriend in Causualty). My Gran , God bless her!, said how much are the raffle tickets? when he was selling his autograph! She kept saying I dont recognise you, who are you?.. it was soo funny..but maybe you had to be there!

Angeliz · 27/09/2003 16:09

my cousin was once sick on Denise Welsh's bathroom carpet

bluecow · 27/09/2003 20:04

Sadly most of claims to fame involve getting drunk with pop stars from my days on pop mags. More interestingly, like Marthamoo, one of my descendants was a famous (in his time) pirate and one of my ancestors sailed with Captain Cook.
