....What names were you tempted to choose for your own children which you reluctantly discarded because you knew it was wrong to name your children solely for your own entertainment, and also because you thought they might get the piss taken out of them or be considered pretentious?

Mine were

Fidel
Vladimir
Padraig
Jesus

Marina, at 'unhinged' Mazo de la Roche. Thing is, the names are all I remember of the books! I was also rather taken with the Forsyte Saga when I was pg with ds1, so Soames or Fleur or Ireneeeeee could have been in with a chance, as well.

Gem, I laugh about it now as well. I mean, how ridiculous can you get??

colditz · 02/11/2005 21:56

Micheal - SO would not be fair with our surname
Jeremy - I like it. Nobody else does.
robin - Laughed out of town by mym mum. So he has it as a middle name instead.

If this baby is a girl I like Evelyn, but nobody else does. Aso like Emily.

harpsichordcarrier · 02/11/2005 21:57

Marina how weird you should mention Frideswide... she is big news round here... at the girls' school where I do some work sometimes they have named a building after her (where I teach) and there is a choir named after her for which I have written several songs!
not sure about her suitability as a role model though...

Serah · 02/11/2005 22:11

Colditz.... would you have a problem with Isaac too???

anorak · 03/11/2005 21:04

DD2 (who was 9 when I told her I was expecting) wanted to call the baby Eyeball!!

pepsi · 03/11/2005 21:17

Frida...........I was mad on Abba as a child, still like them in fact so I thought I might name a child after one of them, didnt go through with it in the end though.

vonny · 03/11/2005 21:31

my sister is expecting and my siblings and i have nicknamed the baby shatner! my brother in law is worried it will stick.

theshrimp · 03/11/2005 21:56

Treasure? because of daddys little treasure.....
I truly have met this person....
In maternity, met a Portia (dramatic eh?) who called her daughter Storm.

eidsvold · 04/11/2005 02:58

grew up near a Storm and Raina - we used to joke if they had a third child it would have been called Thunder.

anorak · 04/11/2005 08:30

Theshrimp - surely the spelling is interstellar?

Satine · 04/11/2005 08:54

We told everyone that our first baby (ds) was going to be called Frogmore Chervil - plenty of people took us seriously and what's really worrying is that some even managed a strained "Oh! What unusual names!"

Bumbled · 04/11/2005 09:34

Isambard, still think it's a brilliant name, just to see people's reactions. Mavis for a girl (our surname's Davis).

My father's middle name is Monins - he got arrested once as he refused to tell the police his full name!

theshrimp · 04/11/2005 09:40

Your right anorak. Whoops! good thing I didn't have a girl!

ellceeell · 04/11/2005 10:13

When we were waiting for our 1st baby to arrive, we told people that we wanted good traditional names - and were considering Ethelred or Boudicca! Cue many worried looks. For our last, we knew it was going to be a girl and I really wanted Amaryllis or Tallulah - dh was appalled!

L1Z · 04/11/2005 10:29

I really love some of these names!

DH wanted to call DD Flash if she'd been a boy. So glad she was a girl!

slapheadsrock · 04/11/2005 10:58

We liked Aneurin for a boy , but it was a girl. Liked a friends idea of Trinity for a girl.
Too chicken though and ended up with names from the top ten each time!!

geogteach · 04/11/2005 10:59

I told all the kids I taught that my first baby would be called 'wellard' (as in dog on Eastenders)many couldn't understand why i'd changed my mind when he was born

aloha · 04/11/2005 11:01

Nbg - I like Angelica. Wanted it for dd!

misdee · 04/11/2005 11:04

Dh wanted to call dd3 Dixie, he looked it up and apparently its an olde english name. but he wanted it because of Dixie Dean(everton player). I do like the name but just couldnt give it to her as her 1st name, so it is her middle name. but dh did win again on calling her Serena Williams. so i have a little tennis player lol.

Emmecanary · 04/11/2005 11:25

DH has an old friend called Merlin. What a cool name. Unfortunately just won't work with our surname. Shucks.

Lio · 04/11/2005 11:51

I wanted Simeon but it reminds dh of monkeys.
