....What names were you tempted to choose for your own children which you reluctantly discarded because you knew it was wrong to name your children solely for your own entertainment, and also because you thought they might get the piss taken out of them or be considered pretentious?

Mine were

Fidel
Vladimir
Padraig
Jesus

We were going to have Inge-Margrethe (DH is danish) but then it was pronounced by a Liverpudlian friend with full glottal stop and we changed our minds.

JonesTheSteam · 01/11/2005 15:08

Fimbo - knew someone once who taught a girl called Rhia - her surname was Liddiot (apparently!!!)

Had to persuade my DH out of Morgan for our DS - not 'cos I don't like it, but 'cos there's a park locally called Morgan Jones Park!!!

handlemecarefully · 01/11/2005 15:09

Fenton

NotActuallyAMum · 01/11/2005 15:11

Didn't see the bad children's names thread but I have a friend called Princess! I kid you not

JanH · 01/11/2005 15:11

Frayedknot, my DH wanted Christine too! (Or Alison or Stephanie or Lesley [baffled])

sharklet · 01/11/2005 15:27

My hubby wanted to call our baby HANK if it was a boy - thank god she was a girl otherwise I'd have had to have killed DH!

northerner · 01/11/2005 15:29

When I was pregnant with ds my MIL kept banging on about the name Hector and what a nice name it was.

beatie · 01/11/2005 15:32

Soren for a boy but would have used it as a middle name.

I kind of like Hector but will use it for a dog someday.

sweetkitty · 01/11/2005 15:33

I really want to call DD2 Millie but with our surname it would have rhymed with Millipede

whatamess · 01/11/2005 15:36

Tarantula - my dd is Caoimhe and I wanted Sorcha (a LOT easier to spell!!)

My sister's partener has the surname Buggins - imagine all the names they had to reject - Bobby, Bilbo would have been good, Betty - in fact try and find a name that goes.

Skyler · 01/11/2005 15:44

Skyler

foundintranslation · 01/11/2005 15:46

This is more for future children... I love Emmanuel as a boy's name and it would work really well with our surname, but ds is Samuel. Samuel and Emmanuel... er no.
For a girl I love Eithne, but have no Irish connections - and a few days ago people who give their children Gaelic names without the connections were being ripped apart on MN

HuggyBear · 01/11/2005 15:48

I loved Elsie for a girl
I like Serenity too

serenity · 01/11/2005 16:03

We were quite restricted with our choice of names, so I had loads that I loved that were out from the start.

Ones I've always liked are

Sebastian
Benedict
Scarlet
Yasmin
Elise

albosmum · 01/11/2005 16:08

I love dougal and donald - but they were laughed at!
Plus i love nearly all names beginning with R - but i have a jonathan ross problem so i will never be able to have robin, robert, etc

suedonim · 01/11/2005 16:10

Anastasia
Damaris
Ghislaine
Vashti
Pheasant
Naomi

Sebastian
Christian
Broderick
Finch
Sasha

Loads and loads more, as well, that dh vetoed!! Our cat is called Orlando, though, and we named our first cat Tarquin.

ninah · 01/11/2005 16:10

Miaou · 01/11/2005 16:17

I wanted Finnian for a boy, or Finlay, but dh decided he didn't like it.

Couldn't possibly have it anyway as I do not pass the mumsnet rules of having celtic connections

Miaou · 01/11/2005 16:20

I like Rory too, Mosschops, another one vetoed by dh! I have a friend whose son (same age as ds) is called Rory, I think it is lovely. Really like the gaelic spelling too (Ruaridh).

tarantula · 01/11/2005 16:26

I love Ruaridh too Miaou. Think its a fab name.

LadyTophamHatt · 01/11/2005 16:26

I can't even pronounce most of these.

tarantula · 01/11/2005 16:35

theres another thread running with help on that LTH.

suedonim · 01/11/2005 16:37

Yup, Soupie. I was reading the Jalna novels by Mazo dela Somethingorother when I was pg and the characters all had names like Pheasant and Finch. Thank goodness dh saved me from myself.
