....What names were you tempted to choose for your own children which you reluctantly discarded because you knew it was wrong to name your children solely for your own entertainment, and also because you thought they might get the piss taken out of them or be considered pretentious?

Mine were

Fidel
Vladimir
Padraig
Jesus

Augustus - Ds2 was due in August
Tertius - he'd have been our third child

binkie · 01/11/2005 16:41

Oh yes, Christian.
Dh mentioned he was thinking of it to MIL (who is Jewish). She was surprised. He said, but why, it's only a name.

(Baby turned out to be a girl, thank goodness, and we named her after MIL's own mother. Halo halo.)

noddyholder · 01/11/2005 16:42

Elvis Really liked it but dp said no

wilbur · 01/11/2005 16:43

binkie - we used MIL's father's name for ds1's middle name. Got shed loads of brownie points for that.

intergalacticwalrus · 01/11/2005 16:44

DP wanted Miranda, which I hated, and he too suggested Christine for a girl, to which I was not amused, as that was his ex wife's name

noddyholder · 01/11/2005 16:44

If a girl would have been Tiger or Dusty

piffle · 01/11/2005 16:45

Siofra its gaelic and means little elf in hindsight it would have been perfect

Aero · 01/11/2005 16:45

Mosschops - good for you. Ds1 is Rory and I still love it - always have since my schooldays - there was one in my year. Everyone is well used to it now, but IIRC, it raised an eyebrow or two when we announced it.

intergalacticwalrus · 01/11/2005 16:47

I wanted Irish names, but before I could even suggest one, dp got on his bigoted high horse, ans said we could only have names like Edward, Millicent and Charles.

My next door neighbour's little boy (who was 6 at the time I was pg) requested that if we had a girl, could we please call her Edna?!

Lonelymum · 01/11/2005 16:47

Wanted Denzel because it is traditional Cornish and I am Cornish, but all I could think of was Denzil Washington and West Indian rastafarians!

Gomez · 01/11/2005 16:52

Cosmo - still thinkng might have a number 3 (which will of course be male) so I can use it. I think it is fab!

HRHQoQ · 01/11/2005 16:55

DS1 was going to be Tafara Liam...until we realised that Liam is an Irish form of William which we caterogically didn't want - go enough Williams in my family without adding another one in.

If DS1 had been a girl he'd have be Zoe Yananai, if DS2 had been a girl he'd have been Alexis Yananai.

And if we'd had twin girls (!) we'd have had Alexis Yananai and Chelsea ????.

Caligula · 01/11/2005 17:02

Actually I've just realised the advantage of pets. You can use all the improbable names you don't dare use for your kids on the dogs, cats and rabbits.

OP posts:
HRHQoQ · 01/11/2005 17:03

and reading it now Tafara Liam sounds completely Crap - Tafara Yehudi goes much better - especially with our surname

starlover · 01/11/2005 17:03

i wanted rainbow for a girl but dp said no

suedonim · 01/11/2005 17:12

DD1 wanted to call dd2 'Freda'.

serenity · 01/11/2005 17:14

Oh I wanted Angel HRLMalorytowers, and I could have actually had Angelus as it's a good greek name (FIL was really keen when I mentioned it as a joke!) but DH nixed it on the basis that they'd get beaten up every day at school

Hausfrau, spent all my pg with ds3 arguing with dh over the name Ciaran - dh wanted it and I didn't (because I knew a Kieren once who was a complete drip) Anyway, we compromised: it is ds3's middle name.

Lonelymum · 01/11/2005 17:58

Also love Fabrizio but would have to have married an Italian to use it.

I toyed with Elias for a while. Still sort of like it.
It's all coming back to me.
