I've taught children with the following names, Crystal Ball, Milo and Disney Beaver and Cairo Mooncane. I swear I have not made this up, I couldn't have!!!!

My ds was born on Christmas Day a few years ago and the local paper like to come and take photos of all the babies born that day. The reporter asked all of us the name of our babies and this young cockney lad pipes up 'Chanel yeah you know like the perfume' my dh whispered in my ear 'Well we didn't think it was as in tunnel' - pmsl.

teeavee · 30/10/2005 18:13

yes, lm, exactly that - never bothered to plan a name.
dp's dad didn't come to see him in hospital for 3 days when he was born

touching, really

I had to ask my DD to repeat what she said when she came home and announced the arrival of Buster and Dixie to her class.

spidermama · 30/10/2005 18:33

Now y'see I quite like Buster (though it's a bit slangy) and I love Dixie and may well have used it if ds4 had been dd4.

expatinscotland · 30/10/2005 18:35

I knew a gal who named her daughter 'Zicada'. As in 'cicada', the Spanish word for a locust. But she wanted it spelt w/a 'z' so people would call the baby 'zeek'.

Yeah, she was a real brain donor.

MamaG · 30/10/2005 18:47

I'm surprised Caitlin pops up so often, it's a very common name oop north

LilMissy · 30/10/2005 19:32

My old English teacher's sons were called
Adrastaus (Stauss)
Cesare (Ches)
and Antiochiotus (can't remember his "normal" name)

(Not terrible sure of the spellings!)

To be honest I kinda like the name Adrastaus but then I'm odd

Carla

SecondhandRose · 30/10/2005 19:44

we know a River Chick

Earlybird · 30/10/2005 19:47

Most unusual name I've heard recently was Zelly - short for Madamoiselle...

I love the boy's name Digby, its big in our family (the Dorset side): it was my great-grandfather's middle name, is my father's middle name, is my father's cousin's first name, is my grandson's middle name, etc etc.

It's just so fabulously Enid Blyton

theshrimp · 30/10/2005 20:31

a friend of mine went to register her DS and the registrar had just had a couple in who wanted to call their dd "silly cow". He phoned the head registrar for that area to see if they were allowed. (They were not)

Unbelievable

albosmum · 30/10/2005 20:48

A family near my mum have children named dallas and denver!

romany4 · 31/10/2005 00:10

My youngest is called Regan which both my dh and I love.
Its not a weird name but a lot of people do say to us "SHUT UP YOU TART!!" when we tell them our boys name!

suzywong · 31/10/2005 01:43

I'm sorry but I refuse to believe Disney Beaver

welshboris · 31/10/2005 09:56

I love the name Regan!

tangox3 · 31/10/2005 11:04

I quite like Kai too, but come from where I come from it means food, so that's a no-no...as is Mimi, which I also love, but means wee!

Friend used to teach a little boy called "Baki" which was short for "Back of the Regent Theatre" (where he was apparently conceived) Horrifying! I can't believe it was allowed!

My friend in Australia has called her 4 boys Lachlan, Lincoln, Lleyton and Landon.

Friend called her little boy Hubert, which I initially chortled at (to myself!) but have got used to now.

princesspeahead · 31/10/2005 11:36

Cam, Digby IS a big name in Dorset - Wingfield Digbys own Sherborne Castle and the Digbys were the biggest landowners around for centuries.

Pamela Harriman was a wingfield digby I think

moondog · 31/10/2005 11:37

Tango..you're not from PNG are you???

slug · 31/10/2005 11:59

One of my nieces is called Regan. Sister blanched somewhat when I pointed out that it's the same name as the head turning girl in the Exorcist. DH insists that the next one should be called Carter.

tangox3 · 31/10/2005 12:02

I'm from NZ, moondog. Do they mean the same in PNGish?!

SA friend told me Fifi means vagina (in Zulu..?) so that one doesn't get used a lot there!

moondog · 31/10/2005 12:09

Is it Maori then?
Kai (properly kai kai) is 'food' in Pidgin English.Maybe it came from NZ? Interesting..
(Spent many years in PNG.)
