HRHQoQ · 28/10/2005 22:12

none of them are as bad as my and my brother's names

Gwen Marie and John William - blurghh...... (and our surname was Dobson...)

bossykate · 28/10/2005 22:13

absolutely nothing wrong with john william imho...

Miaou · 28/10/2005 22:16

Caitlin and I have no Irish connections either so ner
Eilish (pronounced Eye-lish) - again Irish name, causes a lot of confusion now we live in Scotland as people pronounce it Ay-lish (also know an Irish Eilish who pronounces her name Ay-lish - you following me here? )
And Calum. Dh is one quarter Scottish, so is that allowed?

Other choices for Calum - Cameron, Connor, Hamish. If he was a girl he would have been Ishbel.

creepmonkey · 28/10/2005 22:16

bossykate, I'm right behind you on caitlin!! Another one is Shannon, it is not a name Irish people ever gave their children, it was made up by Irish Americans, fgs it is a RIVER!!!!!

creepmonkey · 28/10/2005 22:17

its like Colleen - another US=Irish nonsense name. In Ireland it's a not particularly nice way of saying "lass"

bossykate · 28/10/2005 22:21

well miaou, since you ask...

ay - lish would get my vote
calum - ok if your dh is somewhat scottish
other names - connor's irish, isn't it? cameron, hamish - they sound scottish to me, but i'm not scottish so will defer to other mnetters on that.

HRHQoQ · 28/10/2005 22:23

love caitlin and callum

moondog · 28/10/2005 22:24

Ishbel??
Que???
Sounds as if you're pissed trying to say Isabel...

bossykate · 28/10/2005 22:25

akaik, ishbel is the scottish form of isa/o/bel.

Miaou · 28/10/2005 22:26

We debated long and hard over whether to pronounce Ay-lish or Eye-lish. We first heard the name when we watched a documentary about Irish conjoined twins called Katie and Eilish (pronounced Eye-lish), so that's what we went with.

And Caitlin is pronounced Kate-Lynn, obviously. Quite a popular name up here.

Sasha definitely isn't just a girl's name. it is short for AlexandRA as well as AlexandER. My v posh bona fide Russian friend is called Sasha (short for Alexandra).

I like Talitha (like the Getty heiress who died of a heroin overdose in the 60s)

I know kids called
girls - willow, peaches and peta (pronounced peter)
boys - levi, baxter and wilson.

When their mum's told me what they were calling their babies I managed to keep a straight face and say 'oh how nice'.

moondog · 28/10/2005 22:27

I know a Talitha.
I don't think she has ever met another though.

Miaou · 28/10/2005 22:28

You're right bossykate. Again, popular name up here. Gaelic spelling is Iseabail but felt it would never be spelt right.

katierocket · 28/10/2005 22:29

not a friend but heard a woman in manchester the other day shout at her child "Oi Armani, come 'ere"

bossykate · 28/10/2005 22:29

hmm - i saw that documentary - they pronounced it ay-lish!!!

look, this is why i normally stay away from name threads, someone is bound to get offended, and after all naming children is clearly one of those subjects where reasonable people may disagree.

so good night from me.

i suppose i've never met anyone who called their daughter sasha that was even aware it was of russian origin - so perhaps that has coloured my views. meeow.

princesspeahead · 28/10/2005 22:32

now now lockets, I have met BK's lovely children - kevin, shane, chardonnay and jocasta - and I don't like the aspersions you are casting with that question

dinny · 28/10/2005 22:32

my dd is a Willow.

I really like Sascha - is that a variant or my mispelling?

princesspeahead · 28/10/2005 22:33

(oh and the shane is pronounced "shah-nay"
