Gas Masks/Nuclear War!!

Have been reading with interest in the papers the last few days about the panic buying in both British and US shops for gas masks and I wondered if any Mumsnet members are "panicking" and buying such things. Also just heard on the news about people stocking up on such things as long life milk and tinned goods. Just wonder what other members views are on these things. Incidentally most of the British shops have ran out of gas masks!

Im afraid I have to use a false name because there are a small number of women here who will and have attacked me for my quite reasonable fears.

I find it telling that you are now choosing to discuss my false name other than the issue at hand.

It is also telling that is only the same couple ot names here that keep attacking and in my opinion being rather childish towards those of us with less unusual views.

Do you really think Im in the minority here in being uneasy around muslim strangers at the moment?

Your arrogance staggers me.

Well what was it I was saying about the same couple of names being quite chidish. I rest my case.
I dont suppose sheik mommy is a false name for scrunnymummy perhaps.

I apologise if my spelling has offended anyone but Im dyslexic and have been to tired to use spellcheck. I have been feeding my daughter at the same time on and off and I feel very sad at the vile tone this has now taken on. There should never be a need to stoop to such levels and use such language.

You know who you are "shiek" and I feel great pity for your children.

Minx · 12/10/2001 21:50

Connie/Wornout/Whatever your name is - I have just come back from a trip to Paris after staying in the Arab quarter. It NEVER ONCE OCCURRED TO ME to think I was at risk of being harmed.

Would you be able to recognise the difference between a Hindu, a Muslim, a Lebanese Christian? No, thought not - let's just call them all "Pakis". (Oh, I'm not being racist, it's just short for Pakistani, after all).

Get your head out of the Daily Mail and try THINKING a bit.

Faith · 12/10/2001 21:51

Hello 'shiek'!
Whose children do I feel sorry for? I think it goes without saying. I hope 'Scrunnymummy' is ashamed of herself. Whoops, sorry Connie I'm being terribly childish. Still, most children are not racist bigots, until they start to emulate their parent's views.

Scummymummy · 12/10/2001 21:55

Connie- SheikMummy is not me but my partner. He wanted to post as me but I wouldn't let him, since we have different styles of argument and I like to speak for myself. I told him to join up himself if he felt so strongly. He did. I have tried in vain to interest him in Mumsnet before but... Perhaps this is indicative of just how abhorrent the views expressed in your posts have been.

Connie · 12/10/2001 22:01

Before I finally go to bed now that dd is settled.
I just want to say to scummy mummy that after that vile and infantile post you wrote under the name of "shiekmummy"(how original). Nothing you now write has any importance or consequence to me You have shown yourself to be vicious and nasty and extremely immature. I will simply skip your poste in future .

I find it frightening that you use such a tone and foul language and you are joking about such a sensitive situation. And yet you are a mum?

Im always willing to listen to opposing views but you have overstepped the barrier of common decency and your are clearly not a calm rational women. Have you read your post?

I do not care what youropinion is anymore you are too immature to feature in any adult discussion.

Snugs · 12/10/2001 22:06

Hey everyone, this thread started off as an amusing line on panic buying and gas masks. When did we descend to racism and hate. It will be hair pulling next! Maybe tech should withdraw the whole thread before it gets any nastier.

Faith · 12/10/2001 22:06

Connie, read again your post at 6.34 p.m. Are those the views of a 'calm, rational woman'? Precisely who is using 'foul language'? Your posts have been quite the most abhorrent I have read.

Sheikmummy · 12/10/2001 22:13

Connie, Connie, Connie... What have you done? You know when you sit in the darkness and stare at the flickering cube, when you bang your fists on the tray of mystical runes? When you do that, Connie, we can see the pictures in your head. We can, Connie. And it's not pretty.

"And yet you are a mum?" - A dad actually, Connie. Try to keep up.

Natt · 12/10/2001 22:31

Where is tech when you need him? This thread has gone horribly wrong. Would it cheer anyone up to hear about the time I expressed blue milk?

Justiner · 12/10/2001 22:39

Much as we hate to interfere with discussions on the mumsnet boards, we’re afraid some of the comments in this thread are completely inappropriate and will be deleted overnight. Though everyone has a right to their opinions, we are not here as a forum for racist views or language. Neither is mumsnet here for people to trade personal insults. Apologies to members who read this thread and find it doesn’t make sense. Obviously this is an inevitable consequence of deleting messages. We really hate to interfere - one of the special things about mumsnet is that is self-regulating - but we really can't tolerate racism.

Scummymummy · 12/10/2001 22:42

Yes. I'd like to hear about your blue milk, Natt.

Minx · 12/10/2001 22:51

She started it!

Minx · 12/10/2001 22:51

Joke. Humour.

Scummymummy · 12/10/2001 22:55

LOL Minx! She certainly did!

Lizzer · 12/10/2001 23:03

Snugs, while I agree with your point of the original thread having been mutilated out of all proportion, and obviously tempers have become fraught, I think the whole read (which has taken me ages to go through) is pretty important as it shows just how some people really think. I don't know anyone with the same views as Connie (thankfully). I would reckon she has always had this viewpoint to some extent and now with this situation happening it's all become really pro-active for her, she can see a real 'threat' to her and therefore without being educated properly about the situation she will continue to believe in it. The frightening thing is how many other people think this way in Britain, there must be millions...

Connie, we aren't trying to be PC (I know that its easy to blame it on that idea), just knowledgable about the 'whole' picture. I'm very scared that a whole new generation of children are being brought up in our very much multi-cultural society when they are being raised with parents who take such views as yours...you see its not just political correctness, its life.

Minx · 12/10/2001 23:04

Well, Scummymummy, being deleted at my age ( I presume we all will be) makes me feel quite, er, rebellious.

Lizzer · 12/10/2001 23:06

Oh hell, took me ages to type that last one out just to see that message - joy. I'm going to bed, can we have your blue milk story on another thread Natt - I'm intrigued!

Lizzer · 12/10/2001 23:07

minx by name, minx by nature, eh?!

Minx · 12/10/2001 23:09

Lizzer - good post.

One reassuring fact I learnt recently is that 1 in 5 children born in the UK are now of mixed race. Presumably this proportion can only increase. This can only be of benefit to multi-cultural understanding and harmony. I won't use the word "tolerance". Why should anyone feel that they should only be "tolerated" because of their race?

Lizzer · 12/10/2001 23:17

Minx, I know, its about time everyone accepted it really isn't it?! I'm soooo tired now, feels weird this won't be here in the morning - ah well, perhaps its for the best....na-night

Scummymummy · 12/10/2001 23:25

Night night Minx, Lizzer and Faith.

Minx · 13/10/2001 00:08

Goodnight Scummymummy, Faith & Lizzer.

Sweetie · 13/10/2001 01:13

I have only just come across this thread, and was very interested in the comments made about asylum seekers.
I am a chief immigration officer and therefore am, I think, qualified to speak out about this. It appals me that people seek to turn asylum seekers into hate figures. It also astonishes me that there are some out there who 'fear' asylum seekers and feel uneasy about them. I have met more asylum seekers/illegal immigrants than any of you are ever going to and guess what? They are all individuals- some are good, some are bad, most are just ordinary people.
There is, of course, an issue about whether the majority are 'genuine'asylum seekers. My experience is that most of them have pretty crappy (ie poverty stricken )lives with no prospects of improvement. This, however, does not make them eligible for asylum under the terms of the '51 convention, which is why the majority of claims are turned down. But I think most reasonable people will understand what motivates such people to chance their arm - I think if I were in the same boat then I might be tempted if there was a possiblity of a 'new life' out there.

Anyway,I can't say any more than that (mostly because I'm bound by the official sectets act and therefore will get sacked.) Can I also say that these are my own personal views and nothing to do with the Home Office.

Cheers all.
