other sahm's who dont earn a bean - does your dh give you a monthly allowance?

dh earns all the money in this house - i get the child benefit etc

he gave me a card for his account (we have seperate accounts) but now he wants to give me £300 to cover everything inc weekly shop

i think i can just about manage it, with bus fares, bits and bobs, and he says if i need extra (like shoes for the girls) i can just use his account card

i think the main reason he wants to do this is so he can manage bills etc better (hes a panicker about running out of money before bills are paid)

what does everyone else do please

DP gives me enough to cover the bills as most of them were set up by me so come out of my account. I get the child benefit and child tax credits as my own.

CarolinaFullMoon · 25/10/2005 11:13

there was a thread about this a while back (that ended not-very-nicely IIRC).

We work out fixed outgoings (mge, utilities, usual food budget etc) and then split the rest and dp pays my share into my current account. We have a joint a/c for the mortage, but separate accounts for everything else and always have done.

compo · 25/10/2005 11:13

is that £300 a week? Wow!!!

MarsLady · 25/10/2005 11:14

I think that sounds okay NP. We pretty much do that. He covers the bills and I keep the CB and TX credit

nailpolish · 25/10/2005 11:14

well i dont want to start a fight, if other threads like this have ended badly

what happens if i want a new pair of shoes for me? god, ill feel so guilty!

OP posts:

£300 a month

OP posts:
compo · 25/10/2005 11:16

that sounds more like it!! I think that's a really good idea because the month you want to buy a new pair of shoes you can be a bit more economical with the food and you won't have to ask dh for the money to buy shoes, you can just go and buy them!!

nailpolish · 25/10/2005 11:17

"here you go dh, beans on toast for the 7th day in a row cos i want a new pair of shoes"

£300 A MONTH!

WitchHazellnut · 25/10/2005 11:19

We have a joint account so I just help myself !

When we used to have separate accounts (before we were married) mine would always end up massively overdrawn and his would always have spare so it made sense for us to merge them. Mind you, I did move to London for him so had much higher living costs and he has always earned far more than me so it seemed fair .

nailpolish · 25/10/2005 11:21

he suggested a joint account ages ago but i said no, imagining the scenario when he saw how much the make up/coat/bag/knickers cost that i had bought for me (scenario would be horror)

OP posts:
WitchHazellnut · 25/10/2005 11:21

But should add ...... its works for us.... and whatever everyone else does works for them so no arguments !

nailpolish · 25/10/2005 11:22

i really should find a new job...

eh, NP [confused emoticon] what happened to the pub?

stitch · 25/10/2005 11:24

i get two hundred a month, and the child benefit. he gets the tax credits.
but i do the grocery shop online using his card. i also try and get the kids clothes/uniform etc online, again using his card.
however if i decide that we dont need to do an online shop this week, then i pay for the food myslef. clothes for me, outings for the kids shoes etc, all come out of the 200. i have to ask for money to pay for things like cubs, schooltrips petrol etc, which i dont always get.
very unsatisfactory situation in my opinion, but he seems to think he can control it better like this. he pays all the bills.
its all about control.
i suggest you ask him for a set amount for the household and kids, and a set amount for yourself, for clothes shoes etc.

Bozza · 25/10/2005 11:25

Not sure I would be happy with this personally. Not sure what sort of income level you are on but £300 a month does not sound that much. DH gets paid today so I did our monthly budget for November last night. I always shop on a Thursday (via internet) and there are 5 Thursdays this pay period and because I allow £60/week on groceries thats £300 gone. Then what happens if one of the girls is going to a birthday party and you have to buy a little present or you need to go to the dentist or something like that? Although i suppose you have the child benefit etc on top so maybe you will be managing on nearer £500 a month.

WitchHazellnut · 25/10/2005 11:25

NP - We DO have that sometimes but I'm not as bad as I'd like to be with shopping so usually I can think of justification !! Last time I had this I had bought an expensive-ish pair of trainers but I did point out that I would be wearing them ALL winter every day and that seemed to work.

Having said that, if I (or he to be fair) want to make a big purchase I will discuss it beforehand and so there's not usually too many shocks !!

nutcackle · 25/10/2005 11:28

I get the CTC and Child benefit into my account and a couple of bills go out of that (phone, internet and tv).

Dp's wages go into his account as does the WTC, BUT I have the card to that account too as dp is crap with money. If he needs any money I give it to him.

nailpolish · 25/10/2005 11:29

floss, when i went to the interview i had TOLD them i could only work evenings after 6pm or weekends, and they were more than happy with this. and thats what i have been doing.

but they got a new manager (little shite, about 19 years of age) (who is a son of the owners friend) who says everyone has to do their fair share of weekday lunchtimes, inc me so i had to leave before i thumped him.

AND he didnt let anyone away for a break, ended up working 11am til 3am last saturday, getting no break, having draught coke and crisps from behind the bar (that he made me pay for!)

little oik

so i walked
