I'd be happy with Seville - this apparently makes me a boring limited old fart

But he is now touting Costa Rica - is it me or does it sound kind of risky what with crime, rip tides and crocs

oh and Dengue fever whatever the fuck that is

Anyone want to trade?

I think I might have an old Rough Guide to Costa Rica you can have.

I bought it a few years back, was really looking forward to our holiday there.

Then I got pregnant instead.

I would definitely go there, it won't be like Colombia or Mexico (or at least the dangerous bits of those countries), you'll be fine.

As for dengue, I have lived in several countries where dengue is a problem and none of us (including our small children) got it.

BarbaraBar · 08/03/2011 13:44

I lived in Bermuda for a while.

It's fabulous. You'll have a wonderful time.

The people are so friendly, the food is good and the beaches are deserted and beautiful.

strandednomore · 08/03/2011 13:45

I think Bermuda will be quite dull compared to Costa Rica.

Belize was lovely if you are looking for another desination.

MavisEnderby · 08/03/2011 13:46

Do you have dcs?Just that the flight would be a nightmare.

FWIW BC I travelled around South America and it is the most wonderful place I have ever been to.Holiday of a lifetime.Research well,be sensible, get appropriate vacs, don't go to any notorious dodgy places after dark and you will love it.

Am very Envy actually

DuplicitousBitch · 08/03/2011 13:48

why bermuda, it is full of accountants playing golf - in shorts!

MavisEnderby · 08/03/2011 13:48

Chile and Argentina fab.Santiago and Buenos Aries tres chic.My fav place Peru tho.

Becaroooo · 08/03/2011 13:50

go to skegness.....its like a foreign country

strandednomore · 08/03/2011 13:54

Oh yes Peru. Fabulous place for a holiday.
Venezuela is actually lovely too but probably not these days....

MaryMungo · 08/03/2011 14:01

My fairly staid parents went to Costa Rica and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. It was a package holiday, though, and they never went wandering by themselves. I was Shock though when my Mum showed me a picture of herself going through the jungle on a zip line. Didn't think she had it in her Grin

campergirls · 08/03/2011 14:03

I know very staid people in their 70s who've been on holiday to Costa Rica recently and had a great time. Your anxieties about it are not well-founded. But if you are as intensely risk-averse as your posts about it suggest, then Bermuda might suit you, it certainly ticks your boxes for safe, comfortable and limited.

The 'history' bit will occupy you for an afternoon. Otherwise, it is the home counties of yesteryear transplanted (and don't get me started on the environmental impact of all those lush lawns being endlessly watered with fresh water on a rock in the middle of the Atlantic). Beaches are beautiful, yes, but not better than in many many other places which are also interesting.

What about Mauritius? Not much time difference, safe and comfortable, but exotic and interesting available too for those who like it.

SummerRain · 08/03/2011 14:05

DP and I have a list of countries we want to visit and a completely seperate list of countries that we'd be willing to bring the children to.

Luckily we started our family young so have our whole lives after they've grown up to visit the first list.

hmc · 08/03/2011 14:22

"DP and I have a list of countries we want to visit and a completely seperate list of countries that we'd be willing to bring the children to."

Same for me SummerRain - am more ambitious in my travel plans when just dh and I...after all we've done Sri Lanka (pre children) despite the Tamils! Wink

I'll pass on the Skegness suggestion Becaroo!

Am also doing Iceland for 4 nights during the summer holidays so I think a beach based Bermuda trip with a bit of history thrown in won't be too dull.....

I'll take a another quick look at some of these other suggestions though....

MavisEnderby · 08/03/2011 14:28

Oh DO go to SA if your kids are old enough to do the flight.

It is wonderful

Current sit means I'll probably never get back:(

It is dirt cheap, people amazing, such an experience.Helps if you have a little Spanish (or Portuguese if you choose Brazil)

My happiest memory in life is sat amongst the amazing scenery on Macchu Picchu.

ZZZenAgain · 08/03/2011 14:30

we will get you to Costa Rica
you have no chance

hmc · 08/03/2011 14:32

I am feeling my resistance being worn down bit by bit

Hassled · 08/03/2011 14:32

My DB went to Costa Rica and had an amazing time.

What's in Bermuda, anyway? Shorts, that's what. Lots and lots of shorts. Nothing else.

MaryMungo · 08/03/2011 14:34

The two things I want to see once the kids are grown up are Macchu Picchu and the Great Wall of China. It's the absolute summit of my Holiday ambitions.

Hullygully · 08/03/2011 14:35

Why all the 'when the kids are grown?' I take mine all over the world, it's the best education there is.

MavisEnderby · 08/03/2011 14:38

In my case cos ds has sn.A 4 hr flight to Turkey just me n them was bad enough.really glad did travelling longhaul before dcs.OP GO FOR IT.

hmc · 08/03/2011 14:38

Mine gad about with us - but within my comfort zone (am bit of an over protective mother it seems Blush), we have done a lot of Canada and US....and Dubai

Probably am being a bit ridiculous - since I know people who won't go to the States seeing it as some crime beleaguered place ..and I laugh at them!
