if you go on the link site you can fill in what you want an dit tells you which is suitable to you. Depends what you want from a phone. I am with orange pay as you go and pay £15 a month and get 3000 texts evenings and weekends. my phone is a nokia 3220 and it is ok for what i need

Thanks guys - will have a look.
Auntymandy, are those texts only applicable in the evenings and weekends then? i have just seen this package on the Orange website and would be ideal for me as I always text and never ring anyone.

Ooooh, you want O2 I think. They have some great tariffs and whizzy phones (DS1 has just got the Sony 800 (?) and is thrilled with it - it has a 2 mega pixel camera and he keeps making mini movies with it!)

Tariffs on the link page and you can choose whether to have more minutes or more texts - he has got the £25 750 texts + 150 minutes one ( was going to have the £19 300 texts one but I thought it was worth the extra esp if he starts sending lots of pictures as they use 4 texts each.)

The cheapest handset you can get...

Maybe I'm an ancient old bag and a luddite, but apart from text messaging and phone calls what else do you need in a phone? The rest is gimmicks

JanH · 19/10/2005 12:14

He was with 3 btw and couldn't wait to get out!

auntymandy · 19/10/2005 12:15

its from 7pm to 7am weeknights and all day wekkends

auntymandy · 19/10/2005 12:16

3 seems to get a lot of bad press!

hmc, I have a dead basic old Nokia on PAYG with Virgin and it's always been fine for me but lately I have used it quite a bit more than previously, including ringing DH's mobile at home because someone was using the landline as a dial-up on the laptop, and it suddenly cost me over £20 in one month for very few mins because calls to other mobiles are 40p a minute!

So it can be actually cheaper to get an expensive new phone, free, on a sensible contract with anytime anynumber minutes. (Can still use it like a stone-age one!)

springchicken,
what do you want in a phone?

some things to look out for would be:
a camera - how many megaPixels?
MP3 player (keeps children occupied with music, a must for those boring waiting moments when you would give anything for your children to stop fighting, sit down and shut up)
radio - ditto
GPS if you're splashing out
3G/UMTS - this means cheap talk, video calling, mobile internet (currently v expensive), live TV.
Games - what's on the phone when you buy it, and how much does it cost to download more?

Do you want a candy bar, slider, clamshell shape?

How easy is the user interface? ie many button clicks does it take to do simple tasks like setting the alarm clock? Does it have silly little buttons on the side that will switch the camera on while its in your pocket?

I love the new Nokkia 6230i It has a great camera, easy to use everything you could want really. I only do basics, I don't send many texts and am with VIGIN but that was due to a fab deal via carphone warehouse. Look there ir at dialaphone. SO much cheaper than others

JanH · 19/10/2005 13:48

Nokia 6230i free with O2 contract. Includes bluetooth headset, great in the car!

DH had 6230 from work, liked it because v simple Nokia (is v simple bloke, no good at boys' toys!). Picture screen is a bit small though, I suppose because it is a "candy bar" (lol, crunchie, hadn't heard that before!) You tend to get a much bigger screen with the other kinds, although having said that DD2 has 6630 which has quite a big screen for a Nokia candy bar.

Perfect website for you , SC - mobile-phones-uk!

Has descriptions and user reviews of all the phones in alpha-numeric order - probably far TMI! - and links to some cheapest deals for them all.

Springchicken · 19/10/2005 20:08

I really am not that fussed about the phone itself tbh, as long as it's not a brick or an age old.
I'm more interested in the tariff - I text about 85% of the time so need one that accounts for that, the orange one would've been perfect but its only w'ends and evenings.
BIL suggested the D600 too and he is a bit of a phone buff.

Will go and have a look around now - DP at gym so got plenty of time to mooch about
