Does your Practice have a ractice Manager - she or he is the person to approach. Remeber - your GP make money out of you and you shuould be considerd just liek a customer.
Sorry to hear how awful this woman is - I made the mistake of taking my Ds's poo specimen in a plasitc specimen bag - which the doctor had given me....our receptionist nearly fainited and poitned out in no uncertain terms that it shoul dhave been in a bottle - I felt so small.

Finbar · 29/09/2005 09:22

Oop sorry - I meant a Practice Manager!

berolina · 29/09/2005 09:24

aw lynny, grrrrrrrrrr on your behalf. If it's any consolation the dr obviously thinks she's a dragon too. Could you maybe explain the situation to the dr/nurse and come to some arrangement whereby you have their direct number and can bypass this awful woman? Good on you for not telling the nosey parker your medical business, btw. About today - try getting really stroppy and threatening to complain unless she puts you through forthwith! That might cut her down to size.
Chin up! Will CAT you re week after next, OK?

Lynny, I frimly believe that most doctor's receptionists are hired solely on their ability to be rude and unhelpful! (apologies to the few nice ones out there!)

I have dealt with so many rude receptionsits and feel upset by them the same as you. This is what you must do: speak very authoritively towards them, almost in the manner of a Victorian lady addressing a tradesman, but without being rude yourself. Think of the doctor or nurse as your friend, someone who will happily speak to you, and ring the receptionsist with the attitude that she will not stand in the way of you speaking to them. If she puts the phone down on you again, brace yourself, ring up again and say "I am sorry but we appeared to be cut off just then. Now, I was asking to speak to X...." Don't let her get the better of you. You alone know how important it is to speak to the health carers - she is just the person who connects you, it is not her place to judge how important your call is.

I sympathise. my doctors receptionist is the same. It is like she would have liked to be a doctor, couldnt be one so become a doctors receptionist and is on a power trip! very odd.

Kick up a fuss. That is what I do now and it works better.

Lonelymum · 29/09/2005 09:32

And stop being grateful when she lets you in to the surgery! That is daft and you know it! The surgery exists for patients such as yourself! And her job is dependent on people coming in.

No not you "can" be assertive! You are assertive!

saadia · 29/09/2005 09:46

she sounds terrible, might be worth standing up to her very firmly.
My mil was having problems with receptionist at her surgery who refused to give an appointment for mil's grandson when he had a fever. So, mil had a major rant at her and argued with her and ever since then the receptionist has been as meek as anything. Sometimes people like that don't expect anyone to stanf up to them so they are shocked when anyone does.

Horrible od cow.
They generally are though aren't they?

OK,my two tricks are writing a long calm detailed letter of complaint.
Write it,put it aside, edit it,ask someone else to edit it and when satisfied send it. Make sure it is written in good English, well laid out and so on. You'd be amazed at how few people do this and what a difference it makes.
I'll edit it for you if you like! (Spend an inordinate amount of time writing vengeful missives!)

Secondly, next time you're in and she is rude, say loudly and clearly (and quite politely)
'Are you always this rude to everyone or is it just me??'

It will mortify her (and have everyone else sniggering into the dog earred copies of Take a Break circa 1981) and it is such a brill trick question because if she says 'No' or 'Yes'(!) the implication is that whatever happens, she's always f**ing rude to someone.

You have to show your teeth to bullies, lynny.Being nice to them in the hope they soften

DOES

NOT

WORK!!!!

Yes Lynny and submit them all to Mumsnet, so we can peruse them and add suggstions, in the manner of Mother In Laws.

spidermama · 29/09/2005 10:11

I think doctor's receptionists are a specific breed of people and only get the job if they're nasty, bitter and condesending. (IME)

Of course, any mumsnetters who happen to be doctors receptionists (or friends of mners) are exempt from this and are really nice.

moondog · 29/09/2005 10:16

Oh hello spider!
We were worried about you the other night when you disappeared after complaining about dh.
There is a thread dedicated to you floating about actually.

SherlockLGJ · 29/09/2005 10:16

I am in Farnham and go to the Downing Street practice and I have to say that they are all lovely in there.

But your receptionist sounds like a B*TCH Troll (oops that word again ) from Hell.
