Ooh, I didn't know that either. Must look next time!

codswallop · 26/08/2003 12:26

feel under it - there is a cylinder type thing painted yellow.
Saw a blind guy doing it.

It can be a MN secret sign

janh · 26/08/2003 12:28

Nope, I didn't know, either, I'll try it next time too!

Jenie · 26/08/2003 12:33

You learn something new everyday. I'll have to give it a try, though I may look a bit strange.

katierocket · 26/08/2003 12:54

someone told me this a while ago. for some reason it really pleased me. I like the idea of secret things IFYKWIM- although obviously it's not that secret for blind people!

princesspeahead · 26/08/2003 13:56

but doesn't it go "beep beep beep beep beep as well?"
so must be for blind and deaf people

princesspeahead · 26/08/2003 13:57

ps another excellent thread title coddy - although not as fantastic as "my baby is bionic"

badjelly · 26/08/2003 14:22

I saw the title of this thread and had images of people trying to cross the road but being shaken off the crossing!

Spod · 26/08/2003 14:59

me too...had visions of loads of mumsnetters sitting on a zebra crossing for the thrill!!!

codswallop · 26/08/2003 18:21

will try harder Ph

I refer you to the creme eggs one

TheOldDragon · 26/08/2003 18:54

Ahem. Isn't the one with the button a pelican crossing? A zebra is the black and white one where you rely on the drivers to spot you and stop.

janh · 26/08/2003 18:59

less of a gamble than it sounds, Soupie, compared with eg Italy - there they spot you and accelerate, unless you're a nun, in which case they take both hands off the wheel and cross themselves.

Anybody know how a puffin crossing works?

jodee · 26/08/2003 19:50

Janh, I think a Puffin crossing is the same as a Pelican but has a sensor, so if you press the button but change your mind and walk away, it remembers and doesn't stop the traffic. And tell me about the drivers in Italy - completely mad!

(Must confess I was looking for a cheap thrill when I opened this thread!)

codswallop · 26/08/2003 20:15

you must all try it straight away

OP posts:
codswallop · 26/08/2003 20:16

here you are soupy - this should help here

OP posts:
janh · 27/08/2003 10:44

Gosh, jodee, that's clever. After decades they have finally erected a light controlled crossing at our swimming pool - the car park is across the road - and I heard it was a puffin but it doesn't look any different so I did wonder.

fio2 · 28/08/2003 21:37

Where does it vibrate? I was feeling one today and it didnt vibrate, was I touching it in the wrong place or what?

codswallop · 28/08/2003 21:39

Underneath the whol button pressing unit is a small rolling pin type device painted yellow.

Lol at you groping all the boxes!!

OP posts:
badjelly · 29/08/2003 11:43

I got my best mate to do this in the high street on Wednesday - she had a good grope of the bar thing underneath but it wasn't happening. Made everyone laff though!

codswallop · 29/08/2003 12:41

must try harder! maybe some are broken!!

OP posts:
badjelly · 29/08/2003 15:32

or maybe it only happens in the wonderful world of coddy?

ScummyMummy · 29/08/2003 15:48

In London there are upside down rotating mini cones under the button presser. My son discovered them when he was 3 and worked out that "it turns when the green man is on, mummeee" and we've all been very keen on them ever since!

codswallop · 29/08/2003 17:05

Badjelly, you toad!

Its teruuue. You non believer in codisms

OP posts:
Bogwoppit · 31/08/2003 21:20

Nope. I tried it this weekend (on a cycling hol so I wouldn't be recognised!) It didn't work for me.

codswallop · 01/09/2003 13:34

Look it blinking well works, you need to go and grope some more
