Discuss.. (please)

I am having this discussion elsewhere and amazed at some of the views. Just wanted to see what the general concesuss was on here.. without spouting my own views!

misdee - I doubt it's BW - she/he claims to have a highflying job

happymerryberries · 19/09/2005 17:17

The pay and display sites near us have a sign saying that they are not free , even if you have a badge.

QueenOfQuotes · 19/09/2005 17:17

oops - thought you meant BW, as in batwoman, not babyworld

SleepyJess · 19/09/2005 17:18

HMB yes parking spaces are indeed not always free even with a blue badge.

I honestly thing it is a really stupid thing to get jealous and petty over

personally i dont anyone should pay for parking anywhere, they get enough money in council tax as far as I am concerned but that is my view

SleepyJess · 19/09/2005 17:19

I know Fio.. believe it or not is crops up fairly often on there.. quibbling over the 'perks' of being disabled...!!!

Can I just ask, if all buses were disabled access, should it still be free then? Do disabled people get free bus rides? Am not judging, am asking.

Fio2 · 19/09/2005 17:20

and the free car is laughable

vicimelly · 19/09/2005 17:21

Absolutely YES!! for all of the reasons already posted - I always find these threads too late!

Fio2 · 19/09/2005 17:21

no you have to pay on the bus

happymerryberries · 19/09/2005 17:22

Last week I had to pick up the kids from school and take them to the dentist. the only place that I could park was across town, and we had a brisk 10 minute walk to the dentist. Now this was a minor irritant to us, the kids were tired and whiney, but we could do it.

If any of us were disabled it wouldn't have been possible.

That is the difference, between possible and impossible.

vicimelly · 19/09/2005 17:22

Flossam, yes disabled people can and do get free bus passes I think, my mum had one but now my dad has his 'free' car so she doesn't need to use buses anymore.

SleepyJess · 19/09/2005 17:22

Flossam. maybe they should be... both ALL disabled access.. and free to disabled people. Sadly most are decidely disabled UNfriendly... amd certianly not free. It would be a good step towards provided those without the Motability option (either due to not having the 'right kind of disability' or not the right DLA award) with some freedom too.

I also wish that people who cannot have access to a vehicle could have subsidised transport which suits their needs in all parts of the country

my mother found it very hard to cope for many years as a brittle diabetic with negligible remaining sight she wasn't allowed to continue driving, also had angina and living in rural Wales with only a couple of buses per day found it very hard to live day to day.

Flossam · 19/09/2005 17:23

Fair enough. Am just on a bit of a fed up bit atm, as I can't ever manage to get on a bus round here due to the one buggy only rule just in case a disabled person needs to get on. May not be a problem for most but my back is too sore right now to try and carry pram and DS and it's causing me problems. All caused, mind you, by the actions of a vew selfish individuals who refused to collapse prams to allow disabled people on.

vicimelly · 19/09/2005 17:24

Fio am pretty sure that you can claim a bus pass as a disabled person, in the same way pensioners get their free bus passes I think.
Unless things have changed recently?

Fio2 · 19/09/2005 17:25

thought you had to pay? not sure as stagecaoch tend to not charge for my children anyway even though they are 4 and 5 (almost 6)

vicimelly · 19/09/2005 17:28

I'm not 100% sure on how it works or if it is still in operation, but I know a few years ago my mum did have a bus pass that gave her access to free bus and train travel in our local area, she got it because of her severe arthritis, in fact she may still have it? I don't know! lol
I must remember to ask her about that actually!

maddiemo · 19/09/2005 17:33

I thought buses are free up to 16 now. My ds1(12) does not have to pay to get on a bus.

My ds3[7] has a freedom pass which allows free rail travel.

misdee · 19/09/2005 17:34

they are spo petty on there.

one thing thats get my goat, is hospital cvharging for parking. MIL gets a weekly ticket to visit peter. thats 10pounds a week. so far this time he has been in almost 16weeks. thats 160 pounds on parking alone!! then add fuel costs as well.

after next week it'll be me paying those costs (cos i will pass my test next week!!) and i'm not sure how its gonna be do-able really.

JoolsToo · 19/09/2005 17:36

I agree with Fio about free parking everywhere - lets face it if you're going to a town - you'll probably be spending inthat town - if you're in a tourist spot - same again.

Now I live in the Lakes I pay inflated parking prices in some places just because of the revenue they get from tourists - so to locals it must irritating in the extreme.

In answer to the OP - yes!

ScummyMummy · 19/09/2005 17:41

yes yes yes yes yes yes yes. This just seems so obvious that I can't even be bothered to justify why really. I'm astounded that someone could be so utterly selfish that they thought otherwise to be honest. I actually didn't know that anyone was so stuck in the unempathic dark ages on this issue till I read it on mumsnet.

Jimjams · 19/09/2005 17:43

You don't get free parking with a blue badge in our council- you get it if you have a disabled tax badge on your car which means you are in receipt of disability allowance.

Anyone who gets bitter about the "free" car (which actually costs £160 a month). Or free bus passes (never heard of that- paid for ds 1 last time we went), or free acces to carers for Paignton zoo for that matter- is MORE than welcome to swap places. Hmmmm not many takers.

misdee · 19/09/2005 17:44

anyone wanna swap with me? i do keep trying to get people to live my life each day, not no-takers. even if they did they wouldnt have the constant fear and worry as they'd only be doing it for one day.

MarsLady · 19/09/2005 17:44

Yes, especially as public transport is so rubbish for them. Bad enough with a buggy never mind a wheelchair or crutches etc.......
