What on earth have I done to my computer

Tried to install AOL yesterday...almost worked apart from I couldn't actually load up any web pages. So I am now back to using internet explorer, but some sites do't load at all. Mumsnet is fine, but hotmail isn't. But on mumsnet when I click on "log in" nothing happens - I think another window should open?

I have uninstalled AOL now, and tried to go on the website to cancel my registration, butwhen I try to sign in....nothing happens

Hi ! Long time no speak. Hope all well.

Sounds like your security settings in IE have changed, to disallow pop ups for example, such as the MN 'log on window'.

I think it's Tools / Settings / Security or something like that.

Doubtless a Windoze user will be along to give exact clicks...

Look for a setting 'allow / block pop ups' and also go through the 'security zone' settings, maybe lowering your level of security until hotmail / mumsnet work.

HTH

Tools, "pop up blocker" in IE.

hub2dee · 01/09/2005 18:51

Thanks soupy.

Wallace · 01/09/2005 18:55

Hi! all's well - and you?

HAd a try...still no luck

I'm a bit worried as I had to delete lots of things to make space for AOL, and what if I deleted something vital by mistake...

OP posts:
Wallace · 01/09/2005 18:55

Oh, Windows 98 and IE5

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 01/09/2005 19:00

Did you not get IE6 with AOL?

Wallace · 01/09/2005 19:01

um....don't think so

IIRC, AOL used to have a great online help - live chat with a tech person. They sorted me out several times when I had problems.

SoupDragon · 01/09/2005 19:03

"If you are an AOL member, comprehensive customer support can be found by signing on to your main AOL software, at AOL Keyword: Help."

Which is, of course, no help at all if your AOL software doesn't work...

Wallace · 01/09/2005 19:04

I looked at the AOL site, tried to go to the help...it didn't load

Thanks for trying to help....I think half the problem may be that my computer is ancient
Must go and put kids to bed

Hmmm.. this deleting lots of things to make space for A O L.... erm, how exactly did you wield your machete ? Did you do Control Panel / Programs / Add Remove etc. and take things away nicely or did you File Explorer / Spot a useless directory / Bin it ?

I presume you've tried several reboots ?

You might find a reinstallation of IE sorts it out ?

I'm fine, have a babba to play with now. Are you a little happier with dd's chattiness, or is she still a little hesitant to talk at times ?

Wallace · 01/09/2005 20:35

just binned things I know I shouldn't have, but I was trying to get it done quickly!

Occasionally when I reboot it says "operating system not found" but it has been doing that for ages...I find ignoring it is the best policy...

I've been away all summer so haven't heard your baby news..was it August he/she was due? tell all

Dd is still silent at nursery, but after getting much worse outside nursery, is improving again. So I have high hopes She is going to be assessed by the school paediatrician though

naughty naughty.

It's possible that the slightly random binnage session, plus a build up of cack over a while (ie. 'OS not found', and possibly some spyware rubbish on the PC) means that a reinstall of the browser, and maybe the entire OS might be needed.

Deleting stuff in that way can often lead to trouble. Best to do it the slow / proper way, tedious though it is.

Hope the recent talking improvement is the big move you've been waiting for in increased talkativeness... hope the paed can reassure you....

Baby girl. 4 weeks prem. Slightly worrying at first, now 8 weeks old and we're all settling in. I stuck a load of piccies up and will link after dinner.

Wallace · 01/09/2005 21:07

Congratulations Glad all is going well now, would love to see pics

I think you are right about needing to reinstall entire OS... Fancy a new PC soon anyway

BTW "build up of cack" - describes my PC in a nutshell

Do yourself a favour, get a Mac.

If you're bored you can search my name and mac as I've gone on about them a fair bit.

A Mac mini reuses your PC / keyboard / screen and costs about £400. A full desktop / laptop is probably 800+

Elegant. Stable. V. good with multimedia. Essentially no viruses, no spyware, v. easy to update with security fixes.

IMHO, deffo v. brill. (Sorry Kanga).

dd, dw, and my good self are here .

bubble99 · 01/09/2005 21:56

Our hub. As elegant and stable as any Mac.

hub2dee · 01/09/2005 22:11

Behave yerself.

I'm supposed to BE IN BED.

Is your PC working OK now bubb ?

bubble99 · 01/09/2005 22:22

No. I have no email. Mr Bubble has promised to sort it out for me, but I'm still waiting. I got your email though.

Now you. Put your Mac away, and go to bed quietly.

BTW. How are C's 'wheels' shaping up. Have you negotiated a high street slalom yet?

hub2dee · 01/09/2005 23:17

Deny him all affections, of the mind, the loin, and gut... he'll have it fixed in no time.

MB Terrain TOTALLY ROCKS. Ultra easy to turn.

There is a sale at the Palm Centre near your nursery in Ham... was contemplating checking out the ferns etc. Shall I come and scare all the little children, or would that be Just Too Much ?

Wallace · 02/09/2005 13:58

Aaaah...she is beautiful

Not sure about a mac - I thought they were crap?

OP posts:
hub2dee · 02/09/2005 14:16

ta.

pmsl. They are heaven on earth. Promise.

Wallace · 02/09/2005 20:50

really truely? all my life I have been told that macs suck, and you expect me to change my mind just like that I will do a search to see if you can convince me with your previous posts...
