Great - first full day on the job on his own (TV Licensing Officer) and the last house he visited at 8.50pn an elderly black man re-opened the door after DH had already gone back up the path and shut the gate, grabbed a rock/brick (he didn't hang around to see exactly what it was) and threw it.

Thankfully missed him, but landed in the road with quite a thud apparently - and this was in a supposedly 'average' area of town .

Dior - I was simple repeating what DH told me, which is exactly what he had to write down on the 'incident report sheet'.

and actually if it had been an eldery white man people may have thought that it was a 'racial' attack.

And so nice to know that the details of the story are more important than the fact that someone's DH was very hit by a flying brick tonight

It was prob to enforce the fact that this was not a racist attack rather than to point out the race of the old guy

I hope you don't think i am taking liberties answering that comment QofQ

QueenOfQuotes · 22/08/2005 23:56

hehe x posts froggy - not at all - glad someone else could see my reasoning without questioning it

what if it had ben a young blond guy? would people be questioning then ? heh.

Hattie05 · 22/08/2005 23:58

sorry for your husband QofQ!

In future please ensure you do not make any racist remarks that may offend anyone when you are relaying the story please realise i am joking and do know what i think you are avoiding saying

wheresmyfroggy · 22/08/2005 23:59

Is your dh shaken by it?

(not a great cure for first day nerves i should imagine)

misdee · 22/08/2005 23:59

did he lob the rock/brick back?

'i think you dropped something mate'

Caligula · 23/08/2005 00:00

Well if the elderly black man were Caribbean and your DH is African QoQ, surely it could be interpreted as a racial attack? (Or do the CPS not do that?)

QueenOfQuotes · 23/08/2005 00:01

LOL Hattie.

I'll try not to make any more racists remarks.....

Although when he was doing his training last week (when someone accompanied him on some of his area - so there was 2 of them) they both felt rather intimidated by 2 young black youths .....apparently as "bling bling" as they get.......in the scariest part of town

I think this thread is going off on a tangent

Caligula · 23/08/2005 00:01

You wouldn't have thought being a TV licence officer would have entailed having bricks thrown at you.

tv thrown at you maybe.........

Caligula · 23/08/2005 00:03

I wonder if that bloke keeps that particular rock there just as a regular thing? I wonder if the postman and the milkman get the benefit of it as well?

colditz · 23/08/2005 00:04

He's probably just a bit nuts.

Elderly men can get a bit like that sometimes.

Hattie05 · 23/08/2005 00:04

Do they door knock everyone just to check? Or only those who are showing in the system as to not having a license?

If its the latter then its gonna be risky isn't it because he'll be permanently in contact with guilty paranoid people . I hope they look after there staff! does he have mobile phone and training etc to help them deal with abuse.

wheresmyfroggy · 23/08/2005 00:05

They must be well used to it by now then caligula, they prob put on riot gear when they deliver to him

QueenOfQuotes · 23/08/2005 00:05

WMF - no he doesn't seem to shaken by it - I think I'm nore of a wreck about it than he is

Caligula - I don't think he really got much of a chance to figure out where he came from....his wife hardly openend the door to start with, he came along, told DH he didn't want to speak to him and DH back off - bloke shut door, then obviously changed his mind

it is rather scary that someone would throw a brick at him - he doesn't give out the fines. He tells people the ways to pay their license so the "enforcement officers" don't come along and whack a £1000 fine on you!!!

Misdee - no - though I guess when he's out tomorrow he could go and chuck it back in the garden

Oh Dior, i was only having a joke with QofQ as i know her husband is black so quite blatently she isn't being racist.

And i do agree, would you have said the same if she'd said

an white blonde guy ?

Hattie05 · 23/08/2005 00:07

Oh that doesn't sound so bad then QofQ. He's the nice guy before the nasties turn up. So yes, lets all presume the elderly black guy was just a one off nutter
