Tea Room the Tenth: Tea and cake and rock and roll

1000 replies

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 07/09/2009 23:29

Welcome back to the tea room.

In the search for the perfect venue, we have now decamped to a rambling country estate. The once-decaying castle, now restored, is a boutique hotel, popular with rock and roll gentry and visiting bishops, and the tea room (which never closes) is located in a tastefully converted barn. The charming garden contains a duck pond and ends in a haha. We need the haha, of course, to stop the bison trampling the herbaceous borders. Mellors the gardener is, as ever, in charge of the grounds.

Please come and join us for a celebratory drink.

I don't think to Dr was being too understanding tbh. Do excuse my cultural ignorance, but do they value working mums or not understand the concept of a mum being able to/have to work and be a mum?

It is horrible to watch your little one suffer with sickness, snotty noses, chicken pox, impetigo etc etc! I reckon he'll be ok and it's very important for the whole family to have happy mummy. I'm rapidly learning that being a mum means a whole lotta guilt no matter what you do!

Catitainahatita · 10/10/2009 17:11

It's funny you should ask that because until yesterday I would have argued quite strongly that Mexicans were much more accepting of working mums that seemed to be the case in the UK. I am surrounded at work with other working mothers. The University has its own nursery (which is always full and really difficult to get into); we have these social security nursery (like the one K goes to) especially for working mums (it is very sexist though; the mum has to b entitled; if the dadwants to send his lo there, he has to demonstrate the death certicate of his wife or the court order that awards him custody of the children).

The Brit in me thinks it might be a class thing. It being an emergency yesterday, we saw a private doctor (my GP only consults in the morning) who is very much used to dealing with more affluent parents than is our case. He is also probably quite flush himself. He probably was thinking that I could hire a nanny or something ...

Catitainahatita · 10/10/2009 17:16

Oh and culturally, he was probably assuming that my MIL or SILs lived nearby. Mexican families tend to be very tight-knit. Lots and lots of childcare is done informally in the family. I have many female students witt children whose mother's and MILs look after their children full time so they can study.
He wasn't to know that my MIL and SIL live hundreds of miles away...

orangehaze · 10/10/2009 17:17

what a git. I have no other words of wisdom other than to roll eyes and tut "huh, bloody men"

CMOTdibbler · 10/10/2009 19:35

I think they do get everything at first, and then develop really robust immune systems. I always remember my mum telling me that when she was a student teacher, she was continually ill for the first 2 years - and after that, virtually never as she had had all of the things the little dears had.
DS is certainly pretty healthy these days.

daisy99divine · 10/10/2009 20:13

Hi All

Catita we have just had that sick bug. It's not nice. I wouldn't however remove Kittenito from nursery. Getting all the bugs going is a rite of passage. I would think about ways to boost his immune system with super foods and make sure he has plenty of rest and down time when not there so his system is as strong as possible IYSWIM? I know with DaisyBoy the better rested and fed he is the better he fends things off or recovers. Don't worry about the Dr. SOunds to me like he just hit a raw nerve. You're doing what's right.

We had a rather surreal day. Went to "Mischief" at the Peacock Theatre. Full on sort of experimental dance fo children. Lots of waving bits of foam about(culturan philistine me ) it was rather good. DaosyBoy was rapt for the whole hour which I was quite impressed with since he turned a video of Carz off after 10 minutes saying it was "too long"

Now waiting for food delivery and working. Giddy party animal that I am

llandb you might have to tell us a little more about the penguin!

Linserella lovely to see you again and then wonders if she can get a commission

daisy99divine · 10/10/2009 20:15

I guess it's Strictly tonight.

linserella · 10/10/2009 20:51

Hello!

Just me and Babyrella home tonight watching X-Factor (is this a Strictly preferred zone??!) she loves dancing around to the music! She's had her milk and is full of energy, I'm on the wine with considerably less energy! Manrella on man night out.

Catita, i agree with the others, Babyrella has been in nursery since 9 months (she's just turned 3 now) and true - picked up all the bugs, to be honest, seems to have an almost constant runny nose in the winter months but nothing more than that - I see it as her building her immunity. As Dmot said - superfoods and plenty of sleep is v good advice.

Daisy, thankyou! - take out food? yum! We had the Dine in for 2 for £10 M&S tonight (party central here) the chocolate mousse is to die for, virtually took the glaze off the ramekin with my scraping out there...I will look into Mattress man! It's a big investment so any help is good! I had a night off Babyrella a couple of nights ago and went to see a dance production called The Red Room with a friend. Was fab but have to admit to being out of the regular cultural loop so there were a few moments!! truly was amazing though with stunning dancers (the male dancers...!) what they do with their bodies! and amazing choreography and costumes...ahhh need more of that. Last time I tried to involve Babyrella in something cultural was a puppet theatre production of Cinderella but we didn't get further than the door in as it was dark and "too scary"..(that'll be £20 down the drain then!)...

hey ho, here are some salt and black pepper Kettle chips in a humungous bowl - dig in!

amberlight · 11/10/2009 09:13
MaryBS · 11/10/2009 09:22

I'm an early riser but prefer coffee!

Also watched strictly last night. Some of the dances were definitely designed to raise pulse levels!

notquiteagymbunny · 11/10/2009 09:30

,gratefully accepts proffered tea from amber and fills cafetiere for Mary>

Morning all. Had a great night out on Friday, but high heels killed me. We went to the bar of the Landmark hotel in Marylebone which is v lovely but quite reasaonable price-wise. Thn Italian food and into a pub til they kicked us out.
Yesterday was a lovely lazy day finishing up with x factor and strictly and an early night.

Catita, dd was also sick endlessly when she started nursey, she is never sick now.

orangehaze · 11/10/2009 10:22

Morning gals.
I'd love a big coffee too, to go with fresh Danish pastry

I missed "X factor" and "Strictly" as DH insisted we watch DVD on "Hancock" (Will Smith film) I thought it was a bit crap.

I'm doing a big clean in RL, so might as well do so in here too

notquiteagymbunny · 11/10/2009 10:27

I have plans for a Big Clean here in rl too, have visions that when I finally get off the sofa I'm going to purge my house with a black bin liner in tow. Have got dd on standby to earn some extra pocket money todat - she's trying to save £8 for a Betty Spaghetti so have a willing helper for once lol.

amberlight · 11/10/2009 13:38
Catitainahatita · 11/10/2009 16:11

Thanks for you words of wisdom, ladies. I think you talk a lot of sense. I'm not feeling quite as exhausted today and so feel calmer about the whole thing. Kittenito still has diarroehea but seems to be better in himself. I don't think he'll be at nursery tomorrow; but we shall take our chances once he is better.

In the meantime I am investigating how soon he can have the flu jab(normal seasonal kind)so perhaps he can avoid the really nasty stuff that will be appearing soon.

notquiteagymbunny · 11/10/2009 16:45

Hope he feels better soon catita.

gymhubby and gymgirlie out on bikes and I'm having a quick sit down after filling aforementioned BlackBinLiner with junk and managing to get gymgirlie to help too. Watching Calamity Jane

CMOTdibbler · 11/10/2009 19:47

We had takeout Thai last night with SIl/BIL - and a good gossip about stbx SIL.

Today we braved going to a saddlery shop to get a properly fitted riding hat for DS. He was overwhelmed with horseyness, and kept cantering round whinnying

RacingSnake · 11/10/2009 20:20

DH has now got sickness bug possibly disabling and very serious mystery illness which is ALL MY FAULT. I need to get in touch with reality again. The tea room in just the place.

At the moment he is watching Kirikou with WRiggle and pretending he can't hear or see me as I make ritual and hollow noises of sympathy. I therefore have a few minutes to take some deep breaths.

Oh look - twiglets from last night! MMmmmm

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 11/10/2009 21:32

Phew! Sorry to have missed the last two nights' fun. I was in the potting shed with Mellors, refining my tango technique actually out in RL.

Amazing coincidence, Daisy, that if we hadn't going out, we would have gone to Mischief. We are on the mailing list and get bombarded with enticing flyers.

Catita - I agree that catching lurgies is a phase, gruelling though it is for both you and Kittenito.

Racing - Oh no. Another husbandly lurgy. You have obviously been injecting him with mystery pathogens. You are a Bad Woman.

Amber - Please put that horse blanket in the wash. We have very lovely cashmere blankets and there is no need for you to use something which reeks of horse. And please use the distrssed but nonethless comfortable chaise longue - you look so uncomfortable on the floor.

Now, where were we? Bolly anyone? A bucket of G&T? Twiglets?

notquiteagymbunny - You were in London village this Friday night!!!! !!!!!!!!!

I do love London so... I am truly, madly deeply about the town... esp as (does rock n' roll / cooooool Britania pose) me and DH eloped to London and go' 'itched at Old Marylebone Town Hall ! !

(sorry to old timers who already know this and thanks to notquiteagymbunny for giving me an opportunity to mention one of my favourite subjects to bore peoplewith again !!!)

RacingSnake · 11/10/2009 22:25

I didn't know that! I'd even be interested if I had heard it before.

MadBad, going out in RL????

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 11/10/2009 22:36

Yes, Racing. We went out. The Man To Whom I Am Mistakenly Married (aka MadBadBloke) and I, sans MadBadBaby. It felt quite unreal.

I don't think I'd heard Tea's elopement story before, either.

Oh dear about Racingpig's little naughtiness. I do love the picture in my mind of Wriggle (always naked, whatever the weather) walking Racingpig on a harness.

Would some gin be welcome tonight?

OP posts:
daisy99divine · 11/10/2009 22:52

oh MadBad we were nearly meeting up!

And you went out in RL??? That means at least 2 of the TeaRoom have been out this weekend, I am not sure that is allowed

Sadly, my food dlivery was only supermarket delivery on cheap slot, not actual cooked food, so I still had to cook but it was fine

Racing I too generally see Wriggle naked but in wellies and with things twined in her hair (nice things like feathers and flowers) I am sorry that RacingPig let her down....I can imagine him pulling a trap

CMOT so glad that Boy hasn't become too grown up with his Special Fitting Hat that he forgot to whinny.

A dear friend of mine got married in WEstminster Town Hall and then had a coffee/ cake receptin at the Landmark. Very nice. I still remember the teeny danich pasties they served

MadBad had you forgiven MBBloke enough for a good night out?

Racing sorry your husb is ill - is this the same illness from last year or another?

Amber sorry you are so tired lovely as always to see you

Orange and Gym please come and clean my house too [beggin emoticon]

I am off to hospital soon. I am so relieved thta the shadown on my lung is pneumonia and not something very sinister that I shall probably be the only person singing in the waiting room

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 11/10/2009 22:57

Daisy - You have pneumonia? What's going on? Why didn't you mention this?

(As for TMTWIAMM we have a kind of truce but I am still seething. I guess any long relationship has ishoos, huh?)

OP posts:
teafortwo · 11/10/2009 23:04

Madbad - "The Man To Whom I Am Mistakenly Married".... ROFL!!!!!! Now that sounds like a chic lit best seller title to me!

RS - Talking about husbands does your DH still have Manflu? Mine is snoring at a record breaking volume on the sofa with a blanket over him because he has a "most terrible cold ".

Milk started crying earlier on because she couldn't get her pyjamas on right. Acually I noticed that she was putting the pyjamas on fine. The actual problem that was was making the task so difficult was that she had forgotten to take her clothes off!!!
